Chapter 131 No Simple Fight

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 —Sayumi Mineyama—

By the time Ms. Sakashita’s vanguard smashed through the Demon King’s forward unit and we reached the field fortifications, the allied engineers were already busy setting up camp.

What shocked me most? Gotanba and his rowdy crew. The so-called problem kids had actually intercepted enemy squads, clearing the way so thoroughly that our entire force marched here without a single skirmish.

’Did they… turn over a new leaf?’ For a moment, I doubted them. But no—doubting people isn’t like me. If their actions helped, then I should accept that at face value.

Besides, I didn’t have time to brood. The next phase was ours.

* * *

 ”I have to focus.”

I whispered it to myself as I charged, halberd in both hands, cutting down monsters with a battle cry.

Our first mission as Heroes brought us back to the place it all began: the riverside fortress where we were summoned. But Sanai was alive now. There was no need for sentimentality. This was our beginning.

Our orders were simple: protect the siege troops and their rams and towers until they reached the walls. I didn’t want anyone to die—otherworlder or not.

So I went all out from the start. Knocking arrows and stones out of the air with Weapon Skills, carving my way into the fortress.

”Sayumi! Don’t push yourself!” Yuki shouted, but I couldn’t stop.

 ”Haa… haa…!”

I kept swinging, silver strikes flashing. Yet no matter how many I felled, more poured in.

”There’s so many! Why are there this many inside the walls?!”

 ”This is bad, Sayumi!”

We fought on until my lungs burned and my arms screamed. By the time the great hall doors gave way beneath my push, I was already running on fumes.

And inside, waiting by the shattered throne—

 Ogres.

 Not grunts. Commanders.

”Nuhaaa! Humans are such fools,” one sneered.

”You came all this way just to be our dinner,” the other laughed.

Sogog and Gomul, the vanguard leaders of the Demon King’s army. Their hulking figures, their evil grins—it was like death itself had put on a face and walked toward us.

Their footsteps boomed across the ruined hall, heavy and final, as if ticking down the last seconds of our lives.

My classmates froze, sweat dripping like rivers. But I forced myself to speak.

”Haa… haa… You’re the ones behind this siege, aren’t you? Your underlings are finished. Surrender now, before it’s too late!”

Even breathless, I offered them a chance. They only laughed harder.

”Geheh! That chest of yours—I’ll tear it out and eat it!”

 ”What—!”

I dodged Gomul’s strike, but Sogog’s blow caught me full on, hurling me across the hall.

”Sayumi!” Yuki cried, rage blazing as she struck back. The others rallied, desperate, but—

”Fhaa! Is that all you’ve got?”

”Come on, come on, come on!”

They were monsters for a reason. Sogog and Gomul flowed around every strike, counterattacking with crushing force.

 ”Dammit! We can’t stop them!”

 ”Somebody do something!”

”I don’t wanna die! Send me home!”

Panic spread through the ranks. We were just high schoolers from Japan—this wasn’t the kind of fight we were made for.

We were driven back into the courtyard, where I lay amid rubble, blood streaming from my head. Only Viness’s divine blessing and my old martial arts training had kept me alive.

 ”Ugh… I let my guard down…”

I was conscious, but barely. The foot soldiers swarmed around, shielding me with arrows, hauling me to safety.

 ”Lady Mineyama! Are you alright?!”

”Your Excellency, forgive me, but the Heroes are taking heavy losses! Even with their blessings, this enemy won’t fall easily. At this rate—”

”…Tch. We’ve cut down most of their forces, but against these two… Regrettably, we withdraw. Pull back!”

The order rippled through the troops. “Retreat! Retreat!” The siege lines broke and streamed back outside the fortress.

* * *

Takuya Kiritani hadn’t lifted a finger during the assault. He waited, smug on a nearby hill, watching them retreat.

’So predictable. Leave the weaklings to fight, then step in when it matters.’

In his mind, it wasn’t cowardice. It was strategy.

And when Sogog and Gomul finally strode out, Yuki and the others dragging themselves after, Kiritani descended.

Even through his jaded eyes, Yuki shone—ice magic blooming around her like a snow fairy. The rest of the classmates? Pathetic, cringing, ugly.

’Embarrassing. To call themselves Heroes beside me… intolerable.’

”Haa. You can fall back now,” he said aloud.

 Everyone turned, stunned.

 ”Kiritani?!”

 ”The Hero Kiritani?!”

Relief spread like wildfire. Even the exhausted soldiers found hope again.

 ”Thank you, Lord Kiritani!”

The ogres laughed at the interruption.

”Fhah hah! Another human come to die?”

 ”Nuhaha! Step up, little man!”

Kiritani only smirked, charging forward in a burst of speed.

 ”Come. Let’s settle this.”

And so, the strongest Hero faced the ogre commanders head-on. The real battle was only beginning.
