Chapter 144 Detestable Cartier
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Apart from Ninim, Ayumu Sanai had been searching for someone who could handle bookkeeping and management. By a twist of fortune, he had recently secured the service of a girl named Cartier, a pink-haired prodigy. She was no ordinary girl—Cartier was the granddaughter of the founder of a major merchant guild, a powerful organization that had long spread its influence across Nelrearia Saintland.
It was this very guild that approached Ayumu’s domain with an offer. They wished to expand into Keldan, and in exchange for a prime location for their new shop at a bargain price, Ayumu secured Cartier’s employment under his service. Striking in appearance, her sapphire eyes and soft pink hair made her beauty undeniable. But her personality was another matter entirely.
In an effort to win her favor, Ayumu humbled himself before her grandfather, showering the man with flattery and deference. Yet Cartier responded with nothing but disdain. With an arched brow and words sharp as blades, she dismissed him: “I cannot imagine that my great grandfather would ever think to associate with someone as vulgar, frivolous, and lacking in refinement as yourself.”
Her arrogance was unforgivable, and though Ayumu seethed inwardly, he dared not respond in kind. Instead, he buried his fury beneath a mask of courtesy and resolved, in silence, that one day—when he possessed undeniable power—he would see her arrogance repaid with humiliation.
For now, he swallowed his pride and shifted some of Ninim’s burdens onto Cartier, including the distribution of weapons and equipment to Yoluminette’s freshly drilled troops. The domain’s military preparations pressed forward. Thanks to Keldan’s thriving slaughter industry, leather armor and shields fashioned from livestock hides were plentiful.
Weapons, however, were another matter. Valento’s efforts had given them a blast furnace and some iron, but the supply was insufficient. To stretch their resources, the forging process was simplified, producing crude but serviceable weapons. These lacked artistry but were far better than sending peasants into battle with nothing but farm tools.
Alongside arms and armor, preparations extended to potions and alchemy. New alchemists were being trained, herb farms expanded, and workshops built to ensure a steady flow of supplies. Infrastructure for war was slowly taking shape.
Though the Keldan domain’s forces could hardly yet be called an army, they were growing stronger—piece by piece. Their moment of glory was yet to come, but it was certain to arrive in due time. For now, Ayumu Sanai watched and waited, his ambitions carefully hidden beneath the surface.
