Chapter 159 Interlude – So What If I Sold Them?

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”Hmph… for secondhand girls, they still fetched a pretty decent price.”

Takuya Kiritani flicked one of the gold coins up with his thumb, the little disk spinning in a flash of orange sunlight before dropping back down. He caught it clean out of the air, his fingers closing with an easy snap—the kind of smooth reflex that had always come naturally to him.

There wasn’t a hint of guilt on his face.

Even though he had just sold off all the girls who used to follow him around to a slave trader, Kiritani strolled down the cobblestone street with the calm, unreadable look of someone who had simply finished a bit of business.

Sure, now he didn’t have anyone to… relieve his urges with, but he didn’t care. There was that weird pride of his—I’m not some monkey drowning in lust…—and somehow that seemed enough for him to brush it off.

 If anything, he felt lighter.

Those girls had been nothing but a nuisance.

Even though they’d all been given powerful heavenly gifts just like him, they never fought seriously. They only stayed in safe spots, flattering him and leaving all the real work to him. And if that had been the worst of it, maybe he could’ve ignored it.

 But they were fickle. Unstable.

Even Kiritani, who was good at reading their moods and reacting quickly, had found it exhausting to deal with.

If he so much as glanced away, some of them would sulk or snap, and if one girl claimed she was his favorite, the others would explode in jealousy and fight among themselves.

And on top of that… in their last battle at the front lines, they had been in awful moods the whole time.

They complained about the quality of the food served on the battlefield—while people were literally dying around them. Then they started whining that they wanted sweets.

Then they demanded makeup that didn’t even exist in this world… or insisted on staying in fancier inns, or begged for other things that simply weren’t there.

Honestly, even if it hadn’t been him, anyone would’ve gotten fed up eventually.

 So, he decided.

He would sell them off before they dragged him down any further.

And with the gold he got, he would hire skilled adventurers who actually volunteered to work with him—then invest in their gear instead.

”The only problem left,” he murmured, almost lazily, “is figuring out who to hire…”

His voice faded into the warm air as his boots went clack… clack… down the quiet street, each step echoing off the stone like faint ripples in an empty hall.

The sunset burned across the sky, washing the town in fading gold.

And the lonely, hollow sound of his footsteps seemed—just for a moment—to carry the sorrow and cries of the girls he had sold, drifting away somewhere behind him, fading into the dusk.
