Chapter 16 The School’s Top Genius

Time rewinds a little…
When Ayumu Sanai was aiming for the battlefield as a Slave Trooper…
──Holy Kingdom of Alyurein──
──Inside the Castle: Training Area──
──Sayumi Mineyama──
Sayumi Mineyama—former vice class rep at the top advanced school in her hometown—had been summoned to this otherworld just over a month ago, along with her entire class. Now, she spent her days training alongside the people of the Union Kingdom to prepare for war against the Demon King’s forces.
”Haaah!!!” she cried, unleashing a brilliant silver slash that cleaved the training dummy in half.
With a steady breath, Sayumi lowered her halberd and turned toward the scorched remains of the dummy. The light-element weapon still shimmered faintly from the energy she’d poured into it.
”Every time I see it, the power is amazing, Lady Mineyama. Since you have a firm grasp of martial arts, it’s truly admirable,” said the knight from the Holy Kingdom of Alyurein, his voice tinged with respect.
Sayumi offered a small, grateful smile. “Thank you,” she said, handing the halberd back to him as he stepped forward. A maid appeared at her side, offering a towel, which she accepted with a nod of thanks to wipe the sweat from her brow.
As she cooled down, she turned her gaze toward her classmates across the training grounds.
Students practiced diligently—some swinging swords, others weaving magic spells in focused rhythm. A few knelt beneath white-robed priests, learning the subtleties of Healing Arts. Each was under the watchful eye of local mentors.
Sayumi’s thoughts drifted to the day they had first arrived in Alyurein…
* * *
”Welcome, brave souls from another world…”
The voice was gentle yet resonant, echoing through the grand hall.
”First, I must apologize for summoning you without your consent. From the moment the Demon King appeared in this land… I have waited for you.”
A radiant figure floated before them—hair the color of pale ice, eyes of burnished gold, her body wrapped in a shimmering aura that soothed and overwhelmed all at once. Even though they had only just arrived in this foreign land, everyone instinctively knew: she was not mortal.
”I am the goddess Viness,” she declared, her tone both dignified and mournful. “A member of the Divine Race, tasked with protecting this sacred land of Alyurein since long before your arrival.”
Her beauty was almost unbearable—so much so that even Sayumi, herself a woman, found her breath caught in her throat.
Viness’s voice carried the weight of centuries as she told the story of their world.
”This Holy Kingdom has long stood against the darkness. For generations, the people of Alyurein battled the evil monsters—creatures born of shadow who devoured humans and wielded immense dark power. But after many bitter wars, the Divine Race and the ancient heroes slowly turned the tide.”
”Still, our sacrifices were great. At the peak of despair, a final decision was made… the greatest among us became human pillars—living seals—to trap the Demon King and his army. Through their noble sacrifice, we sealed him away, and the world basked in an age of peace known as Sada.”
T/N: Sada – A sacred word from the goddess meaning “tranquil clarity.”
”But now… that peace is unraveling.”
She paused. The light around her dimmed.
”After lying dormant, the Demon King has returned. He and his followers waited patiently for our seals to weaken. Their strength has recovered—and with it, destruction. Just recently, they razed the neighboring Union Kingdom.”
”If left unchecked, the world will once again be swallowed by darkness.”
Viness extended her hand—not as a goddess, but as someone pleading.
”Brave heroes from another world… will you not lend your strength to protect this land?”
Sayumi had felt it then—a righteous fury welling up within her chest. How could she stand by while the will of those ancient heroes was defiled? How could she allow innocent people to suffer?
But even then… she couldn’t ignore the heavy truth: not everyone wanted this. Not every classmate was prepared to risk their life for a world not their own.
Ayumu Sanai… He was the clearest example.
She had barely spoken to him before. Back in their original world, he seemed like someone living far above her—untouchable.
But she remembered.
It was just before she graduated from middle school. Her father, strict and unsentimental, had been reading the local newspaper when a small black-and-white photo caught her eye.
”Local Record! 16-Year-Old Boy Holds Over 20 Patents!”
A boy her age stood beside the prefectural governor, holding a framed certificate. Something about his downcast eyes tugged at her heart. As she stared, her father, who rarely praised anyone, glanced up.
”What’s wrong?” he asked. “…Oh. That boy. He’s something else, even though he’s about Sayu’s age.” That moment had stuck with her ever since.
Later, they’d ended up at the same prestigious prep school. While she and Takuya Kiritani vied for the top spot, even surpassing Sakashita Marika, he remained apart from them—brilliant, quiet, a shadow at the edge of the classroom.
He never chased recognition. But what truly set him apart was his uncanny intuition.
If someone craved coffee, he’d hand them one before they asked. If a tool was needed during the sports festival, he’d already be standing there with it. It made people uneasy—like he could see inside them.
He had over thirty patents by seventeen. He’d sold several to a mid-sized tech company, earning nearly 3 billion yen. Even the local papers dubbed him a prodigy entrepreneur.
He was, by all measures, a “success story.”
And yet, the moment he arrived in this world… he was branded the weakest hero in history.
Sayumi clenched the towel tighter in her hands.
Overwhelmed by confusion and rejection, Ayumu had stormed out of the castle. Soldiers from the Union Kingdom tried to stop him, but in the chaos, he leapt into the great river that flowed near their stronghold and was swept away by the current.
She had offered to search for him.
But her classmates said, “Let him go. He acted selfishly.”
The Union Kingdom’s commander added, “We cannot risk the safety of other summoned heroes. He is most likely already dead.”
Sayumi had been powerless to argue further.
(He’s probably… no longer with us…)
Now, standing in the courtyard with the sweat-soaked towel still in her hands, she closed her eyes and offered a silent prayer—for the boy whose eyes had once held such quiet sorrow.
