Chapter 189 A Happy Misunderstanding and Relief

In the corridor, Sasami was making quite a fuss. Curious, Ayumu peeked in and discovered that her parents had misappropriated the money she had been saving for her younger siblings, spending it on alcohol and drugs.
”How awful…!”
Feeling deeply for Sasami and her siblings, Ayumu instructed her to tell him the exact amount. True to her word, he handed over a gold coin and fifteen silver coins from his own pocket.
Naturally, Sasami was overjoyed by Ayumu’s kindness, thanked him, and left. She would never know that the money had originally come from selling stolen supplies via a secret passage.
Lately, Lord Ayumu had been unusually kind to Sasami. He had defended her when she sneakily took a melon from Cocoa, and now he had replaced the misused money with his own.
…(☉.☉) Wait! Could it be… Lord is actually a good person?!
Sasami realized she had misunderstood all along. She had assumed nobles saw them as nothing more than insects. Even the adults around her had said that if she had been whipped herself, she might not have survived.
Even though Ayumu had been busy and this was a one-time act, he surely must have noticed some missing items. Perhaps the money he gave came from concern for her and her siblings’ well-being.
”Lord… Sasami was at fault…”
From that moment, Sasami resolved to treat Lord kindly, little by little.
Since then…
”Lord! Aren’t you tired? Sasami can give you a shoulder massage!”
Somehow… Sasami felt like she had recently become nicer to him. It was a good thing, and Ayumu was genuinely happy—but he couldn’t help worrying if she had eaten something unusual.
Recently, Vanya in the kitchen reported that some pepper and rare cuts of meat had gone missing from the freezer. In response, Ayumu had set up his ball-shaped wire trap—a security measure that once caught a monstrous, dog-sized rat—leaving him on edge ever since.
Sasami, coming from the slums and willing to eat anything… (Ah! That plump, tasty-looking bug!) It wouldn’t be surprising if she picked up something strange to eat.
Even when meeting the Sky Runner Alma for the first time, she had blurted, “Σ(o’д’o) Whoa!! That lady has bird feathers! Can I eat her? (º﹃º) Drool♪”—terrifying Alma in the process.
(Anyway, I need to make sure Sasami doesn’t put strange things in her mouth…)
It’s likely that Ayumu will never discover that Sasami was the one responsible for the missing ingredients from the freezer.
