Chapter 29 Sanai Pharmacy And Crossbow

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Some time had passed since he left Rhines’ place. Ayumu had purchased a property near the Slums at an absurdly low price and opened Sanai Pharmacy. He hated being near the Slums, but in the end, it turned out to be the perfect location. The area swarmed with the injured—people bearing cracked skulls from earthenware blows, or others still clutching knives embedded in their bodies. Whatever fights had broken out, Ayumu didn’t know, but they came with steady regularity to buy his medicine. Apparently, his remedies worked fast and packed a serious punch.

Still, with so many thugs showing up, Ayumu had begun to feel his life was in danger. So, the other day, he bought a crossbow and bolts from a weapon shop and kept them cocked and hidden behind the counter. Yet, because the string stayed cocked for long stretches, he worried it might loosen. He inspected and maintained the weapon as diligently as he could.

He muttered to himself, a hint of sheepishness in his voice, “That said… I’ve never actually used it even once.”

Though he owned it, Ayumu hadn’t yet found a reason to draw the crossbow in defense. He resolved to practice on another day.

The next afternoon, after closing the shop, Ayumu took advantage of the excuse of gathering medicinal ingredients to finally train with his crossbow on monsters he’d been secretly avoiding all this time. The result was less than impressive.

”Ah… crap… I missed…” he groaned, frustration flickering across his face.

From the shadows, a low growl echoed, “Grrrrr!!!”

His heart leapt as the creature charged.

”I’m sorry! Hiiiii!!!” Ayumu yelled, scrambling backward.

The crossbow was dangerous when the aim was off. Reloading took nearly fifteen seconds, and even a hit wasn’t always decisive.

”Alright! It hit!” he announced hopefully.

The monster howled in pain, “Gyuaaaaaaa!!!”

Panicked, Ayumu called out, “Are you hurt? I’m so sorry! Please forgive me! Duwaaaah!!!”

It became clear that unless the bolt struck a vital spot, the monster wouldn’t die immediately.

He frowned in determination. “I was in a bad mood…”

To protect the future of Sanai Pharmacy, Ayumu realized he had to improve the crossbow’s weaknesses. That night, he stayed up late crafting a prototype of his enhancements.
