Chapter 39 The Unpalatable Meal

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

It had been a week since Miyake Yuka, Yuzuki Yuka, and Sakashita Marika left Alyurein.

”Ugh—it’s so tough, so gamey, and just plain awful! I want a steak from our world!” Miyake groaned, chewing on a piece of jerky while her shoulders slumped in disappointment. She’d been expecting something akin to the beef jerky from her world, so the bitterness was only natural.

”Mii-chan, no complaining,” Yuzuki chided gently, picking at her own piece of dried meat. But the moment it touched her tongue, her refined features twisted in distaste.

”Hehe… I guess the jerky back home tastes good because it’s seasoned with soy sauce to suit Japanese palates, right?” Sakashita chimed in, hoping to lift the mood with a fun fact. But she quickly realized her mistake.

”Soy sauce… miso soup… Koshihikari rice… I haven’t had any of that in almost two months,” Miyake sighed.

T/N: Koshihikari is a popular Japanese rice variety known for its quality.

”Or shortcake, cookies, chocolate…” Yuzuki added, her voice trailing off.

The two let out a heavy, synchronized sigh, and Sakashita’s shoulders drooped in sympathy.

”Alright, let’s drop this topic! Mii-chan!” Sakashita declared, trying to shift the conversation. “What should we talk about instead?”

But recent topics were scarce: the straw mattress at the inn that had poked their skin, or the surprise that oil was so expensive in this world, forcing them to sleep early.

”Hmm? Oh, right! Yuzukin, remember when you healed that kid who fell? And the farmer’s back pain—you fixed it in one go!” Sakashita recalled, brightening slightly.

”And in the battle with the monsters, Mii-chan’s bow attack—that laser-like thing—was so cool! We’re a great team, right?” Sakashita mimed drawing a bow, her enthusiasm momentarily reigniting.

”Yeah… that was something,” Miyake agreed, nodding along.

”But… those monsters were so pitiful,” Yuzuki murmured softly. She had been the one to bow her head in respect for the fallen creatures, despite them attacking first.

”They were… but Yuzuki, you’re so kind, even to monsters,” Miyake said, a hint of confusion in her voice.

”Well… they did attack us, and I didn’t want you guys to get hurt, so I used my rod with the big gem to fight back. But we did invade their territory first…” Yuzuki trailed off, her tone thoughtful.

She had a point. From the monsters’ perspective, the heroes’ actions—trespassing and slaughtering—were nothing short of demonic. If humans did the same, it would be terrifying.

”But… monsters are dangerous! We had no choice!” Miyake protested.

”Yeah… I guess so,” Yuzuki conceded reluctantly, tilting her head.

”Of course we did! It wasn’t like we could talk things out with them. Right, Ms. Sakashita?”

”Uh… yeah? Sorry, guys. I was trying to cheer you up, but I couldn’t think of anything else to say,” Sakashita admitted, her usual topics—makeup, fashion, games, and celebrities—feeling hollow in this world without TV, magazines, or cosmetics.

”It’s okay,” Miyake said softly. “Thanks, Ms. Sakashita,” Yuzuki added.

The three sighed deeply, their breaths mingling with the vast, unfamiliar sky of the otherworld.
