”…Sorry… I lied.”
After two long days of painstaking effort, the spring’s fabrication proved as difficult as expected. Hundreds of failures were necessary just to get the shape, thickness, and length right. Surprisingly, however, the other components were relatively easy to handle, so the process wasn’t as time-consuming as feared.
Today, Ayumu finally completed the prototype and had gone out to gather herbs for the potion. He had also brought the standard potion just in case the prototype failed, which gave him some peace of mind.
He wandered along a small stream, picking herbs casually. Of course, at a time like this, monsters never seemed to appear…
(…Not that I want them to attack!)
Still, peace was a good thing. Ayumu wasn’t like a typical manga or anime protagonist who thrived on constant battle. This was fine. He didn’t want the injuries and pain that came with frequent fighting.
Honestly, Ayumu was just a potion maker. No one would thank him or remember him fondly as “a good person,” so there was no reason to risk his life. In such a dangerous world, he took risks only to survive—or, more bluntly, for money.
As he contemplated this while collecting materials…
”Ah…”
”Gynsar!”
Was it some unspoken rule in this world that monsters had to have their species called out?
Lost in thought, Ayumu barely noticed a monster creeping into the corner of his vision. And this was bad…
That thing—it was a Gynsar, the crab-type monster flagged as dangerous throughout the town.
”Gynsar!”
Ayumu bolted without looking back. Still, he knew he probably couldn’t outrun it.
By memory, it resembled a giant human-sized shore crab, but the Gynsar was a walking tank: powerful pincers, a shell covering the entire body, and six legs giving it mobility. It was an offensive, defensive, and highly mobile predator all in one.
”Damn! This is unlucky… Gynsar should be near a bigger river…”
This one must have lost the survival competition against other monsters and wandered here, hungry. Worse, it was omnivorous—able to eat moss, carrion, or even live creatures. From its perspective, Ayumu looked like a walking feast.
”Gynsar!!”
The creature circled to block his escape.
”You bastard! You dare try to eat a human while being a mere aquatic creature?” Ayumu yelled, shaking with fear as he drew his sword.
This was a life-or-death situation.
”Gynsar!!” The monster lunged.
”Ahhhh! I’m gonna dieee!!!”
Ayumu barely dodged its massive pincers, hearing a sharp crack as they snapped shut.
(H-Hell… it’s trying to kill me perfectly!)
He couldn’t afford to hesitate. Targeting the gaps in the shell, he drove his sword forward.
”Dieee!!”
The Gynsar squealed, as if saying, “What do you think you’re doing?!” Did it expect him to surrender as prey?
Before he could dwell on it, the creature counterattacked, clamping its smaller pincer onto his right arm.
”St-Stahp! Aaahhh!”
The smaller claw was unexpectedly strong. His upper arm bones creaked, cracked, splintered—shattering in moments.
(I’m… going to die… I’m being killed!)
Pain stole his breath, but the seed of a plan he had prepared kicked in.
”Gyah?! Gynsar!!”
Before leaving, he had poisoned his dagger. The Gynsar seemed clueless about what was happening, and Ayumu forced a weak smirk.
”Serves you right… trying to eat a human…” he muttered, collapsing from the pain.
(I’m… not dying… yet…)
In fading consciousness, he injected the prototype potion. Pressing the pen tip against the carotid on his right neck released the internal spring and piston, forcing the potion from the ampoule at high speed. The liquid penetrated the tiny pores in the skin, accelerating healing.
”….”
The prototype stung slightly, but it was nothing compared to the Gynsar’s attack.
Eight seconds later, it seemed effective—the pain began to fade.
”Haah… haah… haah…”
Breathing became easier. Ayumu wiped sweat from his sleeve. The redness around the wound diminished, and the bones were stabilizing. He quickly secured the arm with makeshift materials before the bone fully set.
”This… might be a remarkable invention…”
Within three minutes, his right arm had returned to its pre-battle condition. Bones and nerves were unharmed.
(I must release this invention to the world…)
Ayumu rushed back to the town to submit his research and patent for the pressure-injection potion to the Royal Chancery’s public registry.
