Chapter 63 Interlude – The Centrifuge
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
A few days later, with the motor finally completed, the construction of the centrifuge began.
”All right… time for a test run. Engage the power,” Ayumu said, tension threading his voice.
The moment to finally operate the centrifuge had arrived. But no sooner had it started than there was a thunderous boom! The machine itself exploded, flying apart in shards and sparks.
”Ahhh!!” “Waaah!!”
Several people were struck by flying parts and injured.
”This is… unbelievable…” Ayumu muttered, his jaw tight.
Fortunately, replacement personnel had been assigned, but Ayumu was scolded nonetheless.
”I know you have backup staff, but please be careful!!”
The second test run proceeded with extreme caution. This time, to prevent injuries, the magic troops constructed thick earthen walls as shields.
”Hmm… this should do it… power on,” Ayumu said, carefully monitoring the gauges.
For a while, the centrifuge appeared to operate smoothly. Then, without warning, flames erupted from the machine!
Everyone rushed to extinguish it, panic surging, but the fire was relentless. By the time it was finally out, all the parts were charred black.

”This time… it has to work,” Ayumu murmured.
After working through the night, rebuilding the centrifuge from scratch, he finally achieved success on the third attempt. This version neither exploded nor caught fire. Relief washed over him.
He prepared the blood of healthy boys, the same age as Crown Prince Aare, pre-screened for blood type and pathogens. Carefully, he set it into the centrifuge for plasma separation.
”All right… done,” he breathed.
The blood separated into distinct red and yellow layers. For now, the process had succeeded. The painstaking effort with the analysis lenses—checking every sample for anomalies—was not wasted. Ayumu allowed himself a moment of satisfaction.
”I… I can’t believe it… yellow liquid… really comes from blood?!” one assistant exclaimed.
”Could it be… that blood is naturally yellow? Seeing it in person, I still can’t believe it…” another added.
Ayumu couldn’t help a small, exasperated sigh. Still not convinced, they moved on to the next step.
With careful hands, Ayumu finished separating plasma from blood cells. Now came the final refinement.
The plasma would be used for the medicine. First, pure ethanol was distilled from alcohol, then mixed with purified water and distilled again. The cold ethanol was carefully cooled and added to the plasma, separating nearly a hundred different proteins by size, adsorption, charge, mass, and hydrophobicity.
This was the low-temperature ethanol fractionation method, first developed in 1906 by Russian botanist Mikhail Tsvet, also known as “Cohn’s low-temperature ethanol fractionation” in homage to the American scientist Edwin Cohn at Harvard, who later refined it for industrial use during World War II to improve soldier survival. This process ensured Ayumu’s blood preparations were safer and more effective.
Finally, the fractionated blood preparations were packed and heated in water maintained at 60°C, creating the finished therapeutic product.
The process was laborious, but immediate use was impossible. The preparations had to be tested for safety first. Ayumu resolved to conduct animal trials, injecting the same preparation into magic creatures and sewer rats to observe the results.
