Chapter 77 The Transfer Order

Ayumu stood frozen, staring at the transfer order handed down by the imperial official. His eyes raced over the heavy script again and again, but the words refused to change.
[Imperial Court—Appointment: Chief Researcher, Alchemical Division, Ayumu Sanai]
[You are hereby dispatched to the Valend Cave Kingdom, to raise the technological level of the entire Yugan domain in service to His Highness, Crown Prince Aare.]
”Whaaaaat?! Eh—EHHHHH?! Why?! Why a sudden transfer?!” Ayumu shouted, nearly tearing the decree in disbelief.
He clutched his head, scrambling through his memory, desperate for a cause.
”…Ah! That’s it—before Empress Sarendra fainted…”
Yes—he remembered. Just before collapsing, the Empress had whispered something chilling: ‘With the technology that exists in this world, hemophilia cannot be cured…’ That single statement must have been the trigger. If she truly intended for Crown Prince Aare to be healed at any cost, then issuing such a drastic transfer was no surprise.
”Well… I’m already on this boat,” Ayumu muttered, half-resigned.
Truth be told, he didn’t mind the assignment. After all, the Valend Cave Kingdom was the domain of the dwarves. The stories he’d heard painted them much like the dwarves from the fairy tales of his old world—shorter than humans, yet blessed with immense strength and unmatched mastery in metallurgy.
And yet, their secrets were fiercely guarded. They almost never shared their techniques with outsiders. That secrecy wrapped their craft in a veil of mystery.
”Damn it… this isn’t supposed to be a vacation, but now I’m excited.”
What kind of place awaited him? Legends even claimed that dwarven women bore beards as thick and splendid as their men. That alone filled him with a strange, childlike anticipation.
The very next day, Ayumu set off for the Valend Cave Kingdom. A horse-drawn wagon rumbled at his side, piled high with stacks of blank, bound volumes—ready for whatever discoveries lay ahead.
