Chapter 90 Birene Mine Tunnel – Sashima & Hiyori

”Phew… we finally made it.”
”Ah… I’m exhausted,” one of them said, slumping near the tunnel’s mouth.
Meanwhile, unaware of the trouble Mineyama and her companions faced deep inside the Birene Mine Tunnel, Sashima’s group collapsed at the entrance. The long journey was behind them, and at last the tension had drained from their bodies.
”It looks like Ms. Mineyama’s group camped here too. There are traces of a fire,” Fuuka Ootori pointed out.
Just as she said, the ashes bore the distinct pattern of fire-laying taught in the Holy Kingdom of Alyurein.
”But how strange. Not a single person is here…” Misaki Tokihara murmured, her usual sharp expression betraying no fatigue as she sank into thought.
”Hmm… maybe they went inside already?” Hiyori Sashima offered.
”Perhaps. But in that case, doesn’t the fire pit seem too old?” Tokihara replied, drawing their eyes all at once toward the charred remains.
The ashes looked damp, as though they had absorbed moisture. For something supposedly from this morning, it felt far too stale.
”Hmm… I wonder,” said Sashima.
”Well, either way, we’ll know once we meet up with Ms. Mineyama,” Tokihara decided. She spread the map of the Birene Mine Tunnel and carefully matched its markings against the direction of the entrance.
The diligent girl believed that keeping track of bearings, landmarks, and how many times they turned left or right would help them orient themselves once they ventured deeper.
”Let’s rest a little longer, then head in,” she told them after checking the stock of glowing liquid markers in her pack.
The tunnel’s dark mouth yawned before them, the unanswered question of the abandoned campfire heavy in the air.

• Mineyama – Vice class rep, serious and disciplined.
• Sashima – Family name of Hiyori. A quiet, caring girl from the library committee, empathetic toward Sanai. She followed as a Barrier Technique Adept.
• Ootori – First appears in Chapter 49 of the story. One of Hiyori Sashima’s best friends, alongside Tokihara Misaki. Fuuka is currently experiencing menstrual pain, which slows her down and causes her discomfort, but she persists in moving forward with her friends. Her blessing makes her a target for those with ill intent, so she relies on Misaki’s combat skills and Hiyori’s barrier abilities for protection.
• Tokihara – Family name of Misaki. One of Hiyori Sashima’s closest friends, alongside Ootori Fuuka.
• Misaki – a sharp-featured beauty and one of Hiyori Sashima’s closest friends, alongside Ootori Fuuka. She is portrayed as a loyal and caring individual who prioritizes her friends’ well-being above all else. Misaki possesses a combat-oriented blessing, which she uses to protect the group from dangers in the otherworld, particularly bandits.
• Hiyori Sashima – A quiet, caring girl from the library committee, empathetic toward Sanai.
