Rising Monk V1c9

Volume 1 Chapter 9 Second Attachment

 ”I did it…!”

The bark of a massive tree, believed to be hundreds of years old, bursts apart in front of Kian. The club that had been bouncing off it now digs deep into the tree, creating a small crater.

It is the basic technique of Azrael’s Dance Swordsmanship—’Impact’.

By channeling his magic power into the weapon, Kian delivers the technique at the moment of contact, an aggressive move that produces an unbelievable amount of power.

 ”Ha, ha… Haha… I did it. I really did it…! Yay!”

If the boys and girls training at the monastery saw this, they might be baffled by his excitement over a basic technique. But for Kian, being able to accomplish something ordinary felt incredibly satisfying.

”…I wish I could just take my magic power and memories back to the past.”

’What foolishness are you spouting now, you?’

The glasses resting on a nearby stump let out a sigh.

They reflect the sunset, shining in a strange way.

’Isn’t that enough already? This one grows a bit weary. I suggested you swing the sword, but I didn’t expect you’d do it all day.’

 ”Huh?”

Now that he think about it, the glasses are reflecting the deep orange sun.

Looking up at the sky, it’s about that time when the sun starts to set.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the guard came to tell him to leave the training area soon.

”Wow, I was having so much fun practicing that I lost track of time.”

Kian says, glancing down at the club in his hand.

Thanks to his energy-saving use of magic power, he’s only consumed about half a bucket’s worth, which is the average daily consumption of a typical soldier.

He’s impressed to have used up that much power with just the basic ‘Impact’ technique.

’So then──now that your heart is content, shall we make our way to the Adventurer’s Guild?’

 ”Huh, what for?”

’To have your adventurer qualification reinstated, of course.’

 ”Oh…”

 The glasses continued.

You’ve mastered the basics of techniques that draw upon your energy (Chi). Today, we refined one of the essentials. With ‘Shock,’ even that shabby stick of yours could shatter a monster’s skull. Do you understand? You’ve reached a level where your attacks are a true threat to monsters.’

 ”Yeah… I think I could handle a monster one-on-one now.”

As Kian said this, he frowned.

(But what if I run out of magic power? Can I still fight?)

’It’s not about whether you can fight or not. If you simply stay idle, death awaits you—be it in a mine or frozen against some great ice wall. Right now, your only option is to get your disqualification lifted. Renew your adventurer’s license, and then you can worry about the rest.’

 ”……”

 Kian hesitated.

But it seemed like he had no choice but to get the disqualification stopped, just as the glasses-wearing person said.

He should at least try, even if it seems hopeless.

Looking at the gnarled trunk of the giant tree, it was clear how dangerous Kian’s attack power was to the monsters.

If he had magic power, he shouldn’t be stuck at the level of a ‘garbage scavenger’ anymore──at least, that’s what he hoped.

 Kian nodded once.

”You’re right. I’ll go to the reception and give it a shot.”

* * *

”Huh? What are you talking about, Mr. Kian? There’s no way you can do that.”

At the adventurer guild’s reception desk──.

Sophia, the receptionist, made a face of disbelief after hearing Kian’s story.

”Cancel the disqualification of your adventurer’s license? You still have the strength to be an adventurer? What nonsense. The guild decided you can’t be an adventurer anymore, so your license was revoked.”

Kian took a step back, feeling belittled by Sophia’s condescending tone.

She had chestnut hair neatly tied up, looking like a beautiful elite.

She was probably over ten years younger than him, but her presence was overwhelming.

Sophia leaned on the counter and let out a big sigh.

”Hey, Mr. Kian? You don’t have anyone to team up with regularly when you’re working as an adventurer. You’re basically solo.”

 ”Yeah, that’s right.”

The receptionist raised her index finger.

”On top of that, you haven’t taken on any monster-hunting quests this past year. Just simple gathering requests. So, if I asked you to go clear out a goblin nest right now, could you do it?”

”Um… if it’s goblins, I’d need about 2 days to prepare. I checked earlier, and it seems my healing magic is working better now, plus I still have some magic power left, so probably…”

”You can’t just say you can do something when you really can’t!”

Sophia cut off Kian’s words, clearly annoyed.

She sighed again and even clicked her tongue.

’My word, did she just click her tongue at you!’

”What’s the deal! I want to go home early today. No matter how much you push, I can’t cancel it. Think about it logically!”

”Um… I can at least appeal the cancellation, right? If you call someone specialized, they can watch me fight using my magic power.”

”I don’t know what you’re planning, but after you get the cancellation approved, are you just going to hog all the newbie quests here from morning till night? The guild is about to officially ban that kind of behavior.”

 ”No, I won’t do that.”

”Huh? Then how are you going to make a living without gathering herbs? Mr. Kian, you can’t use magic power and you don’t have any teammates. Are you really planning to rush into goblin hunting solo? Please don’t, it’ll just make our jobs harder.”

”So, just check out my skills first. I can probably crush a death skull.”

”No way you can! You can’t even properly enhance your physical abilities!”

While they were arguing endlessly at the counter, a party waiting behind them started to get impatient and walked over.

”Hey, hey? Isn’t that old man Kian! What are you fighting with the receptionist about?”

”Even though we’re tired after the quest… how long are you planning to stick around? Just hurry up and get here, Mr. Kian.”

 ”Franciska, Funnelwing…”

A handsome guy with cat-like hair and a flashy blonde magician.

It’s been since this morning at the training ground when he got some snarky comments.

Looks like the ‘Falcon Brigade’ was waiting behind him.

Following Funnelwing are Rosen Pitt and that Wolfmen girl.

’Was it Serena? Hehe, if you ask me, she looks rather delectable.’

The troublemaker priest, Rosen Pitt, frowned silently the moment he saw Kian.

Just seeing him seems to annoy him, his bright red hair shaking like flames.

 ”Oh, listen up, Mr. Funnelwing!”

Sophia leans out from the counter, seeking help from the cat-haired handsome guy.

”Mr. Kian won’t stop whining about getting his disqualification lifted! He’s been at it forever!”

”Huh? So all this fuss is just him whining endlessly? That’s pretty pathetic, Mr. Kian. Just hurry up and get here.”

 Bam! Funnelwing shoves him hard.

With the strength of a vanguard swordsman, Kian gets pushed back and falls without a chance to resist.

 ”Ugh.”

He barely manages to break his fall, but if he had been a moment slower, he might have hit his head.

 ”Ouch…”

 ”Haha, poor thing!”

”Ah, more importantly, Ms. Sophia, how’s the progress on the quest we took today?”

”Oh, right, right! Let me pull up the file. Um, ‘Falcon Brigade’ and…”

Kian stands up, grimacing in pain.

 The glasses whispered to him.

’Come now, Kian, put me on.’

At those words, he felt his heart race for no reason, instinctively.

His body sensed that putting on these glasses would solve the situation.

Suddenly, his brain recalled the refreshing feeling from yesterday when he first put them on.

 (I am──)

 ”not happy.”

 ”Huh? What’s up, Serena?”

 ”Ms. Serena?”

 ”What’s going on, Serena?”

Out of the corner of his eye, he sees Serena shooting a sharp glance at the ‘Falcon Brigade’.

”I’m saying I’m not happy. I’ve been hanging out with you guys for the past few days, but I can’t respect how you unnecessarily bully the weak like this.”

”Huh? What are you talking about, Ms. Serena?”

”If you, the vanguard, had seriously pushed me, I could have gotten seriously hurt. Luckily, I managed to roll with it, but if I had been a second late, I would have hit the back of my head hard.”

”You were in the way. You wouldn’t listen, and you kept sticking around, so what was I supposed to do?”

”That’s not the point. If you’re someone who walks the path of martial arts, you should realize how dangerous your techniques can be to regular people. Saying it’s okay to push someone hard enough to get hurt is just unacceptable──.”

”Oh, so you’re defending ‘yourself’, huh?”

…Kian’s thoughts sharpened, and they felt his gaze intensify.

His expression became more focused, and he ran his right hand through his bangs, pushing the hair up and out of the way.

 Kian was now wearing glasses.

”There’s no need for that. I can take care of myself.”
