Volume 2 Chapter 39 Remnants Of The Past

The white part of the eye is small, and there are black and brown eyes that look like a bird of prey.

Christy stepped back a little, looking scared.

”I don’t know much about ceremonies, but it seems like today is an important knight’s award ceremony for Izerland. Mr. Owl is wearing strong perfume for that, right?”

”Important… well, I guess you could say it’s important in a way.”

”It’s not really a knight, it’s more like a sacrifice.”

 ”What do you mean?”

When Kian asked, Owl squinted again and looked to the center of the banquet hall.

There, a young man with brown hair, who just received a knight title, was surrounded by a few strong knights, talking and smiling.

”Poor thing… He is the knight prepared to be the decoy for Oswald at the next Knights of the Sun ceremony. Kian, did you see the lady knight who gave him the knight’s oath today? She was wearing golden armor.”

 ”Yes, from behind the veil.”

 ”Did she lose to Oswald?”

 ”I heard about that.”

”After losing to Oswald, the Holy Sword of the Sun no longer recognized her as its master. She could not pull out the Holy Sword, and the sun’s magic power went to Oswald. It’s a change of generations. The position of Knights of the Sun was passed on to Oswald.”

”The Knights of the Sun are a semi-independent organization with strong military and economic power. Margrave must also participate in the ceremony to hand over the Knights of the Sun to the next generation.”

”In the ceremony, a duel is held, based on the story of the Knights of the Sun burning the ‘Thorn Demon’. The duel is between the Knights of the Sun and a decoy disguised as the ‘Thorn Demon’.”

”Does this mean that there will be an exhibition match at the Knights of the Sun succession ceremony?”

Kian asked, and Christy shook her head.

”It would be fine if it was just a demonstration, but… it seems they’re going to have a serious duel.”

 ”Huh?”

It is said to be a tradition of the Knights of the Sun.

Owl looked down at the mug of honey wine he had somehow been holding and murmured.

”The next knight of the Knights of the Sun and the ‘Thorn Demon’ knight will have a real duel. They will use real weapons, in a real battle format. …Of course, the goal is not to kill the opponent, but to fight seriously. If it gets too dangerous, Oswald will pull back his sword. It was the same in the last generation── it was like that in her time too. But… when the opponent is Oswald, the knight playing ‘Thorn Demon’ is very likely to have a terrible time.”

”The ceremony will take place around noon, so if she gets cut, it will catch fire from the wound. It won’t just be a small wound. It could literally be burnt to a crisp.”

 ”Isn’t that too dangerous?”

”It is dangerous. If something goes wrong, someone could die. I’m sure it is recorded that during the last inheritance ceremony, the knight who fought got their left hand burned black.”

”Choosing the right person has been difficult. Renaud and I have our pride. We can’t just settle for losing in the ceremony. Renaud might even forget about the ceremony and start a real fight.”

”If we intentionally choose a weak knight, won’t Sir Oswald just hold back?”

”That goes against tradition. Both sides must fight seriously.”

”I think some flexibility is needed, but… the economic power and connections of the ‘Knights of the Sun’ make it a big event where many high-ranking officials and business leaders from other countries come. If someone is not good enough, you know…”

”We called for volunteers until the last minute, but no one was willing to fight against Oswald. Some young knights volunteered, but their fathers opposed them and they withdrew their applications.”

 ”I see, so that’s why he’s”

Kian looked at the young brown-haired knight in the center, who was drinking from a mug of mead.

 Owl nods.

”He is the third son of a knight who serves the lord of Westside, the westernmost part of Margrave Izerland. His name is Guillaume. The eldest son was chosen to be the heir to the family, and he became an adventurer at Izerland Fortress to earn a living and the title of knight.”

 ”What is his adventurer rank?”

 ”I heard it’s Rank 5.”

”They still look in their twenties.”

 Christy nodded and said, “Yes.”

”They say he is a young genius swordsman who is an intermediate-rank adventurer. People are talking about him like he is a great talent since Rean from East End.”

”He might be able to handle this tough job. He can stand up to Oswald’s sword for real and make it work as a show.”

Owl stared closely at the young knight who had become a knight.

Then, noticing Owl’s gaze, the young Guillaume apologized to the men around him before walking over.

 ”Hello, Knight Owl!”

”Hello, Guillaume. This party is for you. Are you having fun?”

”Yes! The drinks here are really good. It’s so different from the sour ale I usually drink with my friends.”

Young Guillaume said this and laughed happily.

He had thick eyebrows and deep features, looking handsome.

He had a well-kept light brown beard on his chin.

He turned to Kian, shaking his long hair that was tied in a ponytail.

 ”Who is this?”

”This is Kian. He is also an adventurer and works mainly in East End.”

”Kian…. Kian…. I’ve heard that name somewhere before”

 ”──Did you defeat Griffin alone?”

An unrelated knight who had been eavesdropping on the conversation made a comment like that.

 Young Guillaume’s face suddenly brightened.

”Ah, that’s it! You’re the famous adventurer who defeated Griffin.”

 ”…..”

 Kian silently bows slightly.

Young Guillaume turned his eyes back to Owl.

 ”It’s like a dream. I never thought I’d become a knight.”

”Which of your companions became squires?”

”They’re drinking mead over there. Haha, I’m worried they’ll get too excited and make a mess.”

He pointed to the two young men who had bowed together at the ceremony.

Both are tanned and have thick arms.

It reminds him somewhat of the Funnelwing he killed a while ago.

”Please come to the Knights of the Sun training ground from noon the day after tomorrow. You should practice with Oswald a few times before then.”

”Huh, is that allowed? I thought we would duel for the first time at the big event.”

”This is still a serious fight for show. That’s why we need to make sure no one gets hurt.”

When Owl said this with narrowed eyes, Guillaume nodded honestly.

”That’s right. I came this far to make a name for myself. I can’t die in some exhibition match. Is Sir Oswald’s schedule okay?”

”He said he would make time. Please bring your friends too.”

 ”Yes!”

Christy frowned at the young man with a ponytail who nodded cheerfully.

”Aren’t you scared? Your opponent is Oswald.”

”If one of us had to die, I would have said no.”

Guillaume put his hands on his hips and smirked confidently.

He continued with flames of ambition in his eyes.

”But, this is just a demonstration. My father is a knight from the West Side, and I have learned sword fighting since I was little. I will show Sir Oswald the power of our Franz Kingdom style of swordsmanship. Well, if an accident happens and I defeat him, that’s okay too, right?”

 ”Are you serious?”

”Hahaha! I’m just kidding! I don’t think I can beat the strongest knight in the Franz Kingdom, the Sword Saint Oswald. But it’ll be a good fight. I can predict that much.”

”Don’t be too nervous. Do your best.”

Guillaume nodded in response to Owl’s words, “Yes!”.

’He is a lively man. He is young, ambitious, and looks like he’s got a lot of skill.’

(Unlike Rean──he has the presence of a true hero. He seems to be blessed with good companions.)

After greeting Owl, the young Guillaume bowed and said, “Well then,” before leaving.

But just before that, he noticed a group of knights drinking and walking towards him, and he stopped.

Kian also looked in that direction and saw that at the head of the group was an old man with curly hair standing next to the throne.

A giant knight in full armor stood on each side, and a blonde girl quietly followed behind.

 It was Maribel.

Today, she looked like a princess from Izerland, wearing a white dress, with her golden bangs pushed aside showing her smooth forehead.

She wore a shiny golden crown on her head.

Her deep blue eyes were calm, and she smiled like a doll.

 ”Well, well, my lord”

Owl made a big gesture and bowed.

The old man with curly hair called McCutchen just shook his belly and ignored Owl.

He squinted his droopy eyes and looked at the young man, Guillaume.

 ”Guillaume”
