Volume 2 Chapter 58 Invitation Again

”Ah… Please take care of me. …Hmm? Silverwooloo?”
Christy furrowed her brows.
”Silverwooloo, isn’t that the family name of the leader of the ‘Storm Herd’?”
”Yeah. I’m Glen Silverwooloo’s daughter. Due to certain circumstances, I left the herd and have been adventuring in the East End.”
”Oh, I see… Wow…”
Kian ordered another ale from the waitstaff and turned to Serena.
”How have you been these past few days?”
”I’ve been with the ‘Vengeful Corpse.’ I’ve been joining lower-rank adventurer parties, but not officially. Kian, according to your letter, you’ve been to the fort and the fortress, right?”
”Yeah.”
”Did something happen? My party’s special points have been increasing like crazy without me knowing.”
”I took on a quest at the fortress. I revisited the ‘Labyrinth of Roses’ and took care of the creature causing earthquakes in the basement of the lord’s mansion.”
”Oh, that sounds interesting. So you met Ms. Christy through work?”
”I was paired with her during the promotion exam.”
Kian pointed at the black-haired witch who was sipping her ale like a borrowed cat.
”Are you an adventurer too?”
”No… I was just there for fun during that time.”
”Hmm? You do interesting things.”
”My… ‘boss’ wanted to participate in the exam. So I had no choice.”
”But thanks to that, I was able to connect with her. I think I mentioned it in the letter, but the invitation from the noble was actually from Christy. I’ve been staying at her place these past few days.”
”I see. So you won’t be coming back here for a while…”
”Speaking of which, I came here today to invite you to the fortress.”
Kian handed the ale he received from the waitstaff to Serena as he said this.
Serena twitched her dog ears, hidden beneath her short hair.
Serena twitched her dog ears, buried in her short hair.
”To fortress”
”That’s right. First, I want you to hear my story.”
”I smell money. Alright, I’ll listen to your story first.”
Kian briefly explained the situation to Serena, including everything that had happened so far.
Maribel had also accompanied him on the exam.
He was recognized for his strength by Maribel through their adventures.
After that, Maribel was targeted for her life in East End, and he repelled the assassin.
While completing quests in the castle, he met Waterman, and through Maribel’s introduction, he became a guard at the Knights of the Sunsuccession ceremony.
”Things are progressing suspiciously smoothly, huh? But from what I can hear of Ms. Christy’s heartbeat, it doesn’t seem like you’re being deceived.”
”Heartbeat?”
”Christy, Serena can read emotions from heartbeats, breathing, and body temperature when she touches someone.”
”Just roughly, though.”
Serena turned her blue eyes toward Christy.
”I can tell you’re feeling anxious right now. It’s okay. I usually try not to be aware of my senses as a matter of etiquette. It would feel bad if everyone knew what I was thinking.”
”Ah, yeah… Wait, I honestly nodded. N-no, that’s not true!”
”It’s fine. No one likes having their heart known. That’s why I keep my ability to read emotions hidden from people I meet for the first time.”
”I see. Wow, that’s impressive.”
”Haven’t you been losing intelligence significantly since a while ago, Christy?”
”Shut up, Kian!”
”Back to the topic, Kian, I really appreciate your offer. But isn’t 3 gold coins a bit too much for just responding to your request?”
”It’s not too much. It’s a fair reward. …Just between us, the ceremony is very dangerous.”
”What do you mean by that?”
”I can’t say everything here. If you agree to take it on, I’ll talk after we move to the fortress.”
”Hmm…”
Serena let out a small sigh and looked down at the long sword she had at her waist.
”Upgrading my equipment is urgent. I just managed to pay off my debt to Ms. Aliona, so I don’t have much money left.”
”Was the Vengeful Corpse happening because you were waiting for me to come back?”
”That’s part of it, but there’s a bigger reason. It’s why I’m hesitant about going to the fortress. Kian, do you know there’s been a murder in this town?”
”Yeah.”
”How much do you know?”
”How much, you ask…”
Kian looked at Christy’s face.
But, he couldn’t hide anything from Serena.
He decided he had no choice but to answer honestly.
”I know quite a lot. I know most of what Margrave’s side knows.”
The condition of the corpse and the cause of death.
Even what the victim ate right before dying.
It’s all information Kian and Christy investigated and reported to Maribel.
Serena’s eyes widened.
”Wait, really? So, the rumors in town are true? That the culprit might be an ‘Azrael’s Death Sword User’?”
”Yeah. I actually entered the murder scene and saw the state of the corpse. I also know the victim’s identity and what kind of business they were in.”
”……!”
Serena was staring at Kian, speechless.
Christy, who had been sipping her ale, interjected.
”What? Ms. Serena, do you have some connection to the ‘Azrael’s Death Sword User’?”
”…He’s my brother’s killer.”
”Huh?”
”My brother was killed by the Death Sword User. Right in front of my eyes… He was torn apart.”
”…! I-I’m sorry.”
”It’s fine. Don’t worry about it. Kian, can you tell me about that murder case? Or is that not allowed?”
”If you take the quest, I’ll have to give you the information. If not, I can’t say anything.”
”… I see.”
After hesitating, Serena looked up.
”Actually, ever since the rumors of the Death Sword User began, I’ve been patrolling at night. The main streets are covered by the guards, so I go to places they avoid, like the slums or abandoned ruins once used by the Yellow Gang.”
”What!? A-a girl, all alone? That’s so dangerous….”
”I’m a warrior of the Wolfmen. I won’t lose to just anyone. As for the Death Sword User… it’s frustrating, but I might not be able to win. But with my speed, I can at least escape from a fight. If I can get to the main street, I should be able to bring the guards and turn the tables.”
”I see, so that’s why the Vengeful Corpse doesn’t go far during the day to patrol at night.”
”Yeah. It’s also because the easy jobs are taken by famous parties. It’s tough to take on quests.”
Serena has effectively skipped her beginner days and jumped straight to her current class.
Even though her combat ability is high, she lacks much of the know-how needed to survive as an adventurer.
”If that’s the case, you should definitely accept my cooperation quest. You might get information about a real Death Sword User, and with 3 gold coins, you can clear your debt and upgrade your equipment.”
”A real Death Sword User? …Huh, it seems there’s quite a gap in information between me and Kian. Got it.”
Serena nodded once and stared back into Kian’s eyes.
”I was already feeling the limits of searching for the Death Sword User during night patrols. If I’m stuck, I need to change my approach. I’ll accept Kian’s request for cooperation. Thank you.”
