Volume 2 Chapter 62 The One Behind The Assassins II
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”You took out assassins in East End, right? How strong were they?”
”There were 2 who looked like they had formal training. The others were pretty skilled too. If I couldn’t read their attack patterns, it could have been dangerous. Have you fought anyone skilled in Azrael’s Dance Swordsmanship?”
”No.”
”If the opponent is a strong user, armor or shields are useless. There are techniques that ignore defense and break weapons. If you can’t stop them, you might get crushed in one blow.”
”What’s the countermeasure?”
”Watch the enemy’s sword and match your magic power with their ki.”
”…I see.”
Wolf frowned deeply.
The countermeasure is simple, but being able to do that against someone whose sword style you’ve never seen would be difficult.
For an Azrael warrior monk, a stiff opponent like the knights of the Western Church is easy prey.
To stop the apostles’ attacks, you have to know their unusual sword trajectories and maneuver your magic power freely to seal them off.
A knight who can become a dragon──Renaud de Châtillon’s fighting style was the optimal answer.
”Hmm?”
”What’s wrong, Kian?”
”It seems there’s a message from my friend patrolling outside.”
”From that Wolfmen female swordsman? ──What!?”
In front of Wolf, a Tengu mask appeared, beginning to materialize as a shadow rose.
Ignoring the warrior who jumped back to take a defensive stance, Kian received a letter from the materialized Tengu.
”Is this your familiar!? …It’s not a human, is it? What is it?”
”Do I need to tell you that?”
Kian said that and examined the paper.
(It seems they found explosives in the space where the carriage was parked. Enough to flamboyantly ignite one carriage.)
’A diversion, or some unrelated third-party mischief, perhaps?’
(I’d better go. I’ll leave the second floor to Wolf and the knight in charge.)
”It seems my friends found a blast bomb outside. It’s in the space where the carriage is parked next to the arena. It was attached under the carriage with the cow crest.”
”W-what!?”
”Contact the knight.”
Kian said briefly while returning the letter to Tengu.
Then he placed his foot on the second-floor window.
”I’m going to check on my friends.”
* * *
After Kian jumped down from the second floor, Waterman followed him with several subordinate knights.
Kian slid down the grass to the parking space located one level lower from the elevated arena.
Among the many carriages, there was a gathering of people dressed as coachmen.
It was in the front middle of the parking space.
”Scatter, scatter! Don’t mess up the scene!”
Waterman’s angry voice echoed from behind.
The crowd parted, revealing Serena in the center.
In front of her were piles of blast powder that had been transmuted into another substance by magic, along with empty barrels.
”Serena.”
”For now, I’ve neutralized the blast powder. It’s not much, so it might just be someone’s prank.”
”No fool would plant a blast bomb in Sir Renaud de Châtillon’s carriage for fun.”
As he pushed through the crowd, Waterman said that.
”Was this carriage Sir Renaud’s?”
”The emblem of the red bull and black spear is Lord Renaud’s crest. There’s a wavy design below, representing the sea of his territory. Were you the first to discover it?”
”Yes.”
Waterman glared sharply at Serena.
”If you didn’t set it up, then good job. If the carriage had burned, Lord Renaud would have turned this grassland into a sea of flames.”
”Serena, did you catch any scent of the culprit?”
”Yeah. It continues to the river over there. But it seems they went into the water. The scent has stopped.”
”The sewer!”
Waterman shouted.
”Alert the underground patrols! Lord Katze, search the sewers! Find the culprit!”
”Yes.”
”Serena, is there any other scent of blast powder?”
”I don’t sense anything yet.”
”Baron Waterman. Her nose is as sharp as ever. I think it would be easier to deal with the enemy if we had her secure the inside of the venue.”
”――――.”
The bald knight furrowed his brow and fell silent.
But after a moment, he shook his head.
”I can’t fully trust that girl. Even if she did save His Excellency’s life on your recommendation. She could be bribed.”
”Then the same could be said for me and the other adventurers.”
”That’s why I have the most unimportant area, the West District, under patrol. You seem to have some misconceptions, so let me be clear: you’re just here to make up the numbers! I’ll leave the important areas to my trusted knights!”
”Kian, just…”
Serena seemed disinterested as she tugged on his sleeve.
Kian shrugged and moved away from the carriage with Serena.
”Well done. I’ll reward you generously.”
”Stop now, or my conscience will hurt from all this generosity.”
Serena said, lowering her backpack and wrapping a cloth around her mouth.
”What are you up to?”
”I’m going to explore the sewers and waterworks.”
”Alone?”
”I’m used to solo missions since coming to the East End. Kian, I’ll leave the arena to you.”
Her eyes showed no hesitation.
She was like a golem, a warrior who calmly went about her tasks.
Kian reached into his pocket and pulled out a gold coin.
”Finding the bomb was impressive. Keep up the good work, but don’t overdo it.”
”Thanks. With the reward you gave me, I’ll gear up and be ready to give you a beating, so watch out.”
Serena’s last words had a playful ring to them.
They nodded to each other, acknowledging the unspoken challenge.
Kian headed for the arena.
Serena, to the sewers.
As they were about to part ways, a scream from the knights above reached their ears.
”――――!”
”Hey, bugs?!”
Beyond the step.
Near the arena entrance, a swarm of black, fog-like bees buzzed and swirled.
He saw a swirling swarm of bees, like black mist, near the entrance to the arena.
If Kian remembers correctly, they are surely in a nearby well connected to the underground waterway.
”The Insect Master? That’s not the corpse has risen”
”They must have been caught in a pincer attack by Baron and the soldiers guarding the basement.”
While saying, Serena was pulling out the cloth from her mouth and running away.
The horde of insects is directly beside the arena – towards the forest planted for soundproofing purposes.
(After passing through the forest, she will end up at the moat surrounding the main castle of Izerland. If she can dive into the water from there, it is impossible to follow the channels that stretch in multiple directions)
’But you and the girl can catch up. Don’t let them get away.’
(Needless to say)
Kian sent an order to take the lead when he throws Tengu’s face.
The face soars high into the sky as if being caught by the wind, then flies towards the forest like an arrow.
(If you catch them, it’s time to let them just spit information and eat them. Don’t kill everyone, Tengu)
