After a brief pause, Oswald murmured, “I’m sorry.”

”It was my misunderstanding. ── Right. Ah, Kian, how many apostles did you confirm?”

 ”…Two.”

 ”What about them?”

 ”I took them down.”

”Ah, that’s why the magic power is decreasing. Are you alright?”

 ”Yes…”

 ”────”

Oswald turned his golden eyes towards the shadow behind Kian.

But he silently took the coat and the sheathed holy sword from the maid (the maid was wearing thick leather gloves).

”Your Excellency, if you are heading to the arena, Kian and I will escort you. Do not worry, we will have vanished by the time Lord Guillaume conducts his questioning.”

 ”Oswald, thank you.”

”No. This is the duty of a knight. I deeply appreciate that Your Excellency came to me first. As long as I, Oswald, am here, I will not let the thieves roam free.”

Oswald lightly said this and helped Maribel stand up from the sofa by taking her hand.

Kian followed after Oswald, despite getting suspicious glances from the guards.

* * *

After that, they returned to the arena with Oswald, but to their surprise, there was no sign of Guillaume and the other 2 anywhere.

Oswald parted ways midway and engaged in helping Owl and others escort the guests back to the central district’s inn in order.

When Kian asked some nobles who had been chatting with Guillaume, the only response was, “Now that you mention it, I haven’t seen them.”

 ”Your Excellency.”

As they returned to the entrance of the arena, Fringilla stepped forward.

 ”What is it?”

”Lord Guillaume must have already returned to the inn, or he may have gone to the adventurer Guild.”

 ”That’s true…”

”If you could lend me a guard, I will look for him on my end. It’s no problem for me to question Lord Guillaume.”

The sweating guard beside them nodded in agreement.

Wearing armor and holding a spear, it must be tough on his undertrained body.

”Given the situation, Your Excellency should return to the main castle.”

”Hmm… where has Lord Guillaume gone?”

”He’s probably sleeping comfortably at the inn.”

 ”────”

 Maribel frowned with worry.

But exploring around the arena any further would be pointless.

Visiting the Adventurers’ Guild or Guillaume’s usual inn is no longer something a frontier princess should do.

It’s dangerous, and she needs to change into inconspicuous clothes to avoid unnecessary confusion.

”Understood. I will return. Fringilla, please handle the inquiries. You can take all the guards with you.”

”But that would leave you without escort to the castle.”

”I will wait here for Christy and Liam to return. They should be retrieving the Insect Master’s men at the outskirts of East End. Ah, Kian, will you stay behind?”

”Yes. If that is your command.”

Kian observed the movements of the knights passing through the hall, answering shortly while checking for any suspicious individuals.

”Then I will take my leave.”

 ”Alright. I trust you.”

Fringilla and the guards left the arena, bowing to the smiling Maribel.

Only Maribel and Kian were left behind.

”Kian, you will be in the way of the knights here. Let’s wait in the waiting room over there.”

 ”Understood.”

Nodding, they stepped out into the hallway together.

As they walked, Maribel looked up at Kian’s face.

”You don’t look well. Are you alright?”

 ”I’m fine, Your Excellency.”

He said while opening the door to the nearest waiting room.

As Maribel passed by Kian, she fixed her dark blue gaze on him.

”No, I know you’re worn out from the fight. However… right now, Kian seems to have a darker expression than usual.”

 ”I apologize for that.”

 ”No, I’m not reproaching you.”

Maribel sat on the sofa in the room with a wry smile.

Sitting up straight, with hands on her knees, she behaved well.

Kian stood at the door, and she patted the seat beside her.

 ”I can’t sit down. I’m your guard.”

”It’s fine. This is an order.”

 ”…Then.”

Removing the sword and bishop staff from his back, he took a seat.

Then the sweet scent of Maribel’s sweat drifted over.

 ”Kian, you’re a bit sweaty.”

 ”I’m sorry.”

”I’m not angry. I don’t dislike your smell.”

 ”────”

Thinking about what that could mean, Maribel gently placed her small hand on Kian’s knee.

”Thank you for helping me so much today.”

 ”Huh…? Did I do something?”

”You did. You gave me the courage to speak to the McCutchens, and you provided me the chance to talk with Oswald.”

”It was your Excellency who went to meet Sir Oswald.”

”But… without you, Oswald would surely not have taken my words seriously.”

”That’s not true. Sir Oswald is a loyal knight.”

Maribel smiled self-deprecatingly and shook her head.

”There’s surprisingly little I can do.”

”Many people admire Your Excellency. I do too.”

”Thank you. You are indeed a model knight.”

 ”────”

Kian widened his eyes slightly at Maribel’s casually spoken words.

After a brief silence, he slowly shook his head.

”Your Excellency is mistaken. I am not someone who deserves such praise.”

”Is that because you burned down my forest and turned people to ash?”

 ”────”

Dark blue gem-like eyes peered into his.

Coincidentally, the white dress’s neckline had loosened, revealing a slight swell of fat on her otherwise flat chest, and he felt an unwanted reaction in his groin.

”Not denying means that Oswald’s words are correct.”

 ”No, I…”

”What should we do? I really liked that grove.”

 ”────”

A hand, gloved in white, gently stroked the kneecap.

Maribel, with her plump lips like strawberries, whispered mischievously.

”This will have to be settled with your body, I suppose.”

 ”…Huh?”

”Ah, when I say body, I don’t mean it that way, okay? I just…”

The blonde young princess cleared her throat dramatically, her cheeks turning pink as she said this.

Her voice trembled oddly, perhaps from nervousness.

”Kian, please become my──my very own knight. …Is that not okay…?”
