Volume 2 Chapter 83 Revenge, Assumptions

 ”…Christophora…”

* * *

Sarah furrowed her brows as she turned back to the small intruder.

A cold, eerie energy enveloped her.

The distinct scent of a peculiar perfume filled her nose.

From beneath the reddish-brown hood emerged the figure of a short-haired girl with odd-colored eyes.

 ”Christophora”

 Shajar narrowed her eyes.

Neither Sarah nor her father let their guard down just because the shaman before them appeared as a child.

Cute is just a superficial façade.

Her true nature was ugly and vicious.

Her apparent age and actual age were likely more than ten years apart.

”Hello, Shajar, Sarah. It’s a message from Sir Jibril.”

”A message? Sorry, but I have no ear for his talk.”

 ”Are you really so sure?”

Her odd-colored eyes were blue and yellow.

And when her emotions surged, her mouth split from ear to ear, revealing sharp fangs.

 She was undeniably not human──.

Until a few years ago, there had been no such eerie presence in the Vahid household, but since Jibril ascended to the position of head, the Vahid family had become a realm of magic.

The other Twelve Divine Generals feared Jibril and did not speak of him, but there were whispered rumors behind the scenes that he might be dabbling in some forbidden means.

Sarah believed that rather than the Nakash family’s misdeeds, it should be these strange beings around Jibril that were the topic of conversation, yet for now, they were considered ‘ordinary humans.’

 The girl──Christophora continued.

”Nizaam is dead, and you’ve been cast aside by the Malc family, right? Sir Jibril is pained by the plight of the Nakash family and, for this occasion, has offered to extend his hand with conditions. Specifically, to present a young woman from the Nakash family as a fiancée. Sir Jibril is seeking a new wife to add to his harem. In exchange, the Vahid family will defend the Nakash family at the next meeting and protect their seat among the Twelve Divine Generals──”

”I refuse. The Nakash family will uphold its position through our own strength. We will not borrow the power of the Vahid family.”

 ”……”

 Christophora relaxed her mouth slightly.

 She smiled.

Sarah recalled the recent sight of Jibril as she looked at it.

He was a person who seemed to have grown up just like the boy he once was.

He had created a library in his home, the same size as a monastery’s, and spent his days holed up there conducting some kind of research.

It gave the impression that he was always reading books, except when he went out to socialize.

Long black hair that reached down to his shoulders.

A stylish pose, sitting by the window of the library and flipping through the pages of a book.

He did it all quite naturally.

At first, he would set up a tea gathering every time Sarah visited, but gradually he began to meet with her more often amidst his research.

For Sarah, it was fine since she was only there to take care of business matters.

”What Sir Jibril is looking for is a girl similar to Lady Sarah over there. He hoped for Natra, but she hasn’t returned, has she?”

 ”────”

”Then, someone else. However, Sarah herself has expressed her reluctance. She is──was she already 27 this year? To me, 17 and 27 don’t seem that different, but it seems that is not the case for him.”

”…I have no intention of complaining about Lord Jibril’s tastes. However, I would prefer if he didn’t bring that to the Nakash family. If he desires a young girl who is still so innocent, he should seek elsewhere.”

”So, you are rejecting our offer?”

 ”……”

 ”I see.”

Christophora nodded easily and walked over to the window of the marble hall.

She placed her foot on the window frame and sprouted black wings from her back.

With her odd-colored eyes, the yellow one of hers, she bared her fangs at the corner of her mouth.

”I’ve conveyed the message. ──Look forward to the next meeting.”

 ”……”

 ”……”

With a flap, her black wings soared into the sunset sky.

The cold air that had filled the hall dissipated, and a warm sea breeze from the port began to blow in.

Sarah turned her gaze back to Shajar.

”I will strengthen the barrier. Tell Rufna──”

”She will accompany us to tonight’s meeting. The barrier enhancement can wait. Call that mercenary. Have him discern the lies of the other party. Request additional personnel for teleportation from the other side.”

 ”Yes.”

”Now, gather the disciples. They must be seeking battle.”

 ”Understood.”

”Good, go ahead. …Nizaam. My comrade. I will surely avenge you.”

Shajar’s words dissolved into the twilight.

From afar, the final sailing ship of the day enters the port, marked by the sound of a gong.

Dusk will soon arrive at this port town.

Then, the final operation will commence.

 ”――――.”

Sarah turns her back to her father, who gazes out at the scenery, and leaves the hall.

What resided in her heart was a profound doubt.

(Kian… Was it truly you who defeated Almeisa?)

Almeisa was the highest apostle of the Nakash family.

She thought that he was stronger, having been in more battles than Sarah, who had recently been away from combat.

A near-0 tachyonian cell was not someone to be trifled with.

In the first place, even if Kian wielded a magic sword, he should not be able to unleash great magic.

For now, as someone only hearing stories from others, Sarah wondered if the ‘Kian’ of the rumors was someone different from her betrothed, Kian Vahid.

Naturally, it was more reasonable to think he was a different person.

Someone must have been using Kian’s name to stir up trouble──

Within Sarah, the face of a boy who always seemed unreliable yet smiled came to mind.

He was more the type to be caught up in situations than to take action.

Skilled at handling chores without fuss, yet oddly serious and tight-lipped, he was the ideal person for those who would take advantage of him.

(It was probably not Kian who defeated Almeisa with the magic sword. Someone disguised as Kian, who replaced him. But, who is that someone?)

The benefits of taking on Kian’s identity were unclear from the start.

Was it to gather armed groups within the Franz territory under Kian’s name?

Nonetheless, the armed groups seemed largely untouched, showing no signs of influence.

(However, that ‘Kian’ or Oswald of Ramsey is a strong candidate for the fake Death Sword User.)

There is also the matter of avenging the slain apostle, and her father Shajar intends to eliminate both.

Even if it’s Sarah, if ‘Kian’ isn’t Kian Vahid, there’s no point in protecting him.

 Rather──.

(If someone has taken his place, then probably the real Kian has already been killed. There’s no reason to keep him alive.)

 The sound of teeth grinding.

Kian’s memories are becoming increasingly vague.

Even so, she knew better than anyone that the boy had been very kind.

That’s why Sarah remained his fiancé, the closest understanding friend and ally.

(Kian. A pitiful person who was unjustly born, exiled, and then killed and used. I don’t know who is deceiving his name, but at least as a friend, I will take revenge for him. Otherwise, his soul won’t find peace.)

 A resolve in her hands.

A murderous intent towards the unseen ‘Kian’ in her eyes.

The brown-skinned beauty briskly passed through the twilight corridor──.
