Volume 2 Chapter 93 The Circumstances Of The Danofen Family I
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”──What? Going back…?”
In Maribel’s office.
Christy’s foolish voice echoed in the simple, cramped room, even after the steward was chased out of the political scene.
”────”
”Huh? Huh…?”
Maribel, with a smiling face, fell silent, while Christy continued to babble nonsensically, her eyes swirling.
The noblewoman attending Maribel placed a hand on her cheek, saying “Oh my…”
”But, well, yes, it’s true, isn’t it? You’re an adventurer… Did you register in East End?”
Nodding in response to the noblewoman’s question.
”Yes, I registered as a citizen there. I’m paying taxes by submitting materials from monsters to the East End branch.”
”I see… There’s nothing we can do about it. Thank you for your hard work until now.”
”W-wait, Fringilla! Kian, what do you mean by this?!”
”What do you mean?”
”I’m asking why you’re going back to East End! It makes no sense!”
”Were you not listening?”
”I was listening!”
The black-haired witch also shouted back with a bright red face and then began to hold her head, crying, “Ahh, why?!”
It made Kian want to ask, “Why?” himself, but her emotional instability wasn’t anything unusual.
It would be fine to wait and see until she calmed down.
”──Are you really going back?”
Interrupting Christy’s agonizing voice, the blonde young princess sitting at the desk quietly asked this.
She had stopped smiling.
The cheerful expression from before seemed to have merely stiffened.
Maribel stood up from her chair and walked over to Kian.
Her golden brows were furrowed, and deep disappointment was apparent in her dark blue eyes.
Although she was young, she should understand what it means to be an adventurer.
Kian understood that if he continued to stay at the fortress, he couldn’t undertake quests as an adventurer.
”Yes.”
”Can’t you work at the fortress? Wouldn’t it be difficult to move your residence here from there?”
”The procedures will be complicated, and you’ll need extra money.”
”You won’t become my knight, will you?”
”Your Excellency, there are many knights who are more dedicated and loyal to their duties than I am. I’m not someone worthy of your attention.”
”If Kian has decided, I can’t say anything. In the end, I haven’t been able to provide you with satisfactory compensation.”
”As for compensation, I received it from Lord Owl. Twenty gold coins is more than enough.”
”That was Owl’s pocket money. Although it was paid on my behalf, I ended up making you do unpaid work. I’m truly sorry.”
”Your Excellency! That’s not right!”
The nearby noblewoman raises her voice sharply.
It seems to be a reminder that one shouldn’t easily bow to a mere adventurer.
Maribel raises an eyebrow and glances back at the noblewoman but says nothing.
Kian, knowing his place, isn’t offended by this.
”Is that so… Are you going back to East End?”
The blonde princess turns her face back down, looking dejected.
Now that they drew closer, he noticed the dark circles under her eyes.
She probably hasn’t slept much.
Her complexion isn’t good either.
Come to think of it, Christy and the other women in the area had a strong scent of perfume.
Christy mentioned she hadn’t gone home for 3 days.
It seems they all haven’t had the chance to freshen up.
”Ms. Christy, thank you for all your help these past few days. I’m returning to East End, but I will come by the fortress occasionally. …Well, once my business is on track and I become an advanced-rank adventurer, I might apply again to the castle guard.”
”Aren’t you still at lower rank? Just when will you become an advanced-rank?”
”I think I can level up faster than expected since I’ll be taking on many quests of high difficulty, 2 ranks above me. If I don’t get seriously injured along the way, it shouldn’t take 2 or 3 years.”
”I see…”
Christy murmured softly and turned her face away.
However, it was visible that tears were streaming down her cheeks.
And sensing a hint of danger from the witch who was also shedding tears with eyes lacking luster, Kian took out a magic scroll from his backpack.
”I’d like to give this to Ms. Christy who has taken care of me.”
”Sniff… What is this?”
”As your ‘knight,’ if something happens to you, Ms. Christy, I will rush to your aid immediately. This is a contract of ‘promise.’ When it’s sent to the Adventurer Guild as a quest, a mark will be engraved on my arm to notify me.”
”Kian… So, it’s like a severance payment. Thank you. I’ll keep it safe without using it. I’ll take it with me even to my grave. We’ll be together forever.”
”How does it end up like that? I will visit here again. It’s to repay you for your kindness──”
”You said we’d be together forever.”
”──It’s something to repay you for your kindness. If anything happens, feel free to use it.”
”Liar, liar, liar, liar, liar, liar, liar…”
”────”
(Huh?)
Is something bad happening──?
”Fringilla, speaking of which, how long has it been since Christy last slept?”
”…Ah, it might be about 30 hours. I’m sorry, I forgot. This girl tends to overdo it if left alone.”
”Let’s get her to the nap room immediately. I forgot myself. She even teleported us earlier in this state.”
The noblewoman──Fringilla snatched the documents from Christy and led her out of the office.
After watching the weary back of the black-haired witch fade away, Kian turned his attention back to Maribel.
”I’m sorry for barging in at such a difficult time.”
”No, it’s fine. We needed a break anyway. It’s been a bit… yes, a bit tough with the reduced personnel.”
”I’ll take my leave now. Your Excellency, please feel free to contact me if you require monster hunting or the gathering of rare materials. I’ve grown stronger from this recent adventure. I believe I can handle most things.”
(Mainly Natra and Rufna, however)
’You’re the one using them. The achievements of subordinates belong to their superiors. So just relax.’
”────”
Maribel walked around the room a bit without answering, then looked towards the guard waiting nearby.
”You all should take a break. You’ve been standing since last night, haven’t you?”
”No, we have been taking proper breaks!”
The earnest young guard replied, though he swayed slightly.
Maribel smiled softly.
”It’s alright to take a meal break. It’s a bit early, but there should be a cook in the kitchen.”
”But──”
”No buts. Take a break. This is an order, you know. It would be troublesome if you collapsed.”
”Your Excellency…”
Maribel turned to Kian and gazed intently at his face.
”Besides, I would like to speak with Kian now. It would be helpful if you could leave us alone for a bit.”
