Volume 2 Chapter 95 Emergency Quest

”Where are the foreigners who were banished from the tow?”

 The guards exchanged glances.

”Who knows? They’re probably wandering around somewhere or getting eaten by wolves and turning into poop, one or the other. Hahaha!”

”Poop, poop! Hahaha! ──Huh? What’s that?”

Before the guards noticed, Kian had already spotted a group of Azraelian coming from the west street.

They likely came from the street market.

They were all dressed in travel gear.

”Looks like they’re leaving the town. A whole group of them—how annoying.”

 Another guard waved them off.

”Hey, garbage scavenger, Little Lady Serena. Those guys are out already. We’ve got work to do.”

”Thanks for your hard work, guard. Let’s go, Serena.”

 ”Yeah, Kian.”

They entered the town, swapping places with the Azraelian group.

All of them had serious expressions, and despite being together, they didn’t chat with each other as they walked.

As they passed by, a clattering sound of iron scraping came from the luggage on their backs.

(The sound of iron parts of light armor scraping)

Kian squinted for a moment but quickly returned his gaze forward.

They seemed somewhat tense, but there was no atmosphere of them attacking the guards.

They were similar to adventurers heading out for a hunt.

Moving from the west street to the central street.

The familiar adventurer Guild building came into view (the window of the Guild master’s room that Kian’s crow broke was boarded up), and as he walked down the street, he spotted a sign with a pig’s hoof mark.

 ”Good night, Serena.”

 ”Mm, see you later.”

After parting ways with the silver-haired girl, he pushed open the tavern door.

The bell jingled, and a girl with a brown ponytail peeked out from the kitchen.

 ”Mr. Kian!”

 ”Esther, I’m back.”

”Welcome back! It’s been a while!”

Her face lit up as she wiped her hands on her apron and came out from behind the counter.

She trotted up to Kian, beaming with a radiant smile.

”So you came back today! If you had told me in advance, I would have prepared a welcome for you!”

 ”Sorry, I completely forgot.”

”Ah, no, no! You don’t have to apologize for that! I just wanted to personally welcome you. Anyway, thank you for your hard work! Was the ceremony successful?”

 ”Somehow.”

”Please take any seat you like! Here’s the menu! Will you be here for a while?”

”Yeah, I plan to return to East End and take on adventurer quests like before.”

Hearing that, Esther placed her hand over her chest in relief, her expression softening.

”I’m glad… Actually, I was worried that Mr. Kian might not come back from the fortress. It must be more comfortable over there, and I figured there would be a lot of work for you.”

”Hey, Esther? What are you──Oh! Kian!”

As he debated how to respond to Esther’s tearful smile, the owner Robert stomped in from the back.

He was a huge man, reminiscent of a bear, holding a wooden spatula that smelled sweet like honey.

He stepped out from behind the counter, crossed his thick arms, and approached Kian’s table.

”So, you came back! Welcome home! It’s great to see you! Hey! You look healthier than before!”

”Yeah, I’ve been earning more money, so I can eat better now. But nothing beats the food at ‘The Boar’s Trot Inn.’ I can’t forget the taste of the seafood dishes and whole grain bread that you and Esther make.”

”Oh, oh, you’re saying nice things! Hahaha!”

”Dad, Mr. Kian is going to be working in East End for a while.”

”Oh, really? You’re not saying you’re leaving us, right? Keep spending generously while you’re here!”

”Hey, don’t talk about him like he’s a cash cow, dad…”

”It’s fine, Esther. I know he’s just joking.”

 Robert nodded repeatedly.

”You can’t get along with someone who doesn’t understand jokes. Cash cow──no, Kian gets it!”

”Mr. Kian, would you like to try the Shrimp with Chilli Sauce? It’s delicious!”

”Thank you. Then I’ll have 3 servings.”

 ”Alright, leave it to me.”

Robert started to head toward the kitchen.

Kian hurriedly called out to stop him and took out 2 wooden boxes from his backpack.

One was large, and the other was flat.

The large one was a souvenir for Robert, while the flat one was a collection of ribbons for Esther.

”This is a gift for both of you who have been so kind to me. I bought it at a famous clothing store in Izerland fortress.”

Esther clasped her hands together and exclaimed, “Wow!”

”Is this for me? I’m so happy!”

”Oh, this is from the Troi merchant guild!”

 ”Is it famous?”

”It’s an upscale shop. I’ve heard they also do tailoring for the royal family of the borderlands──the Danofen family.”

”Oh! Mr. Kian, can I open this?”

 ”Go ahead.”

”Wow! Ribbons! They’re so cute! And there are so many!”

”You love fashion, right, Esther? I thought these would be great for tying your hair or decorating new clothes.”

 ”Thank you so much!”

The ponytailed girl hugged the box and smiled widely, showing her white teeth.

It was a good expression that made Kian smile too.

Meanwhile, Robert looked a bit hesitant.

”Hey, didn’t this cost quite a bit? Are you sure it’s alright?”

”They were about ten silver coins each.”

 ”Eh…!?”

”Hey, Kian. You’re a lower-rank adventurer, right? …Are you really okay?”

”Y-yeah, that’s right! Ten silver coins! It’s a lot of money! Don’t waste it, absolutely not!”

 ”It’s not wasted.”

Kian continued with a wry smile.

”This gift carries the meaning of thanking you for everything. You’ve made me a special menu, lent me your backyard, and treated me differently from other customers, right?”

 ”That’s because you’re my lifesaver.”

”Like Mr. Robert, I’m also grateful to everyone at ‘The Boar’s Trot Inn.’ Please accept this and make good use of it. ──Oh, and here are some sweets and wine I bought over there. Enjoy them with everyone at ‘The Boar’s Trot Inn.’”

”You’ve really brought back a ton of souvenirs… Are you sure that’s okay?”

Robert murmured as he examined the numerous aprons packed in the box.

Esther received the sweets and wine from Kian.

”These look like some fancy sweets… Thank you! We’ll enjoy them together!”

 ”Do that.”

Actually, the wine was the most expensive among the souvenirs.

Two bottles for ‘The Boar’s Trot Inn’ and 3 for the monastery.

Just that alone cost about a gold coin.

However, strengthening bonds with the people he interacted with regularly was important.

It didn’t necessarily have to be something expensive, but he ended up spending this much to convey his feelings to everyone.

Kian believed it was not in vain.

”Mr. Kian, I’m wearing my swimsuit.”

As Robert went down to the kitchen, Esther, still there, whispered softly in his ear.

She gently placed her hand over Kian’s right hand resting on the table.

”Can we have some time later… okay?”
