”From the outside, some things only become clear later. ──So, Kian, why worry about the sky’s barrier?”
”You’re not planning to attack from above, right?”
”Your voice sounded suspicious-nya.”
Ninini brushed sand out of her clothes and frowned.
”The barrier is triple-layered. It spreads like a chessboard pattern and constantly shifts left and right. If something drops from above, you can’t slip through the gaps. Worst case, you get caught between the layers──turning into a diced steak.”
”Kian, the magicians on watch handle sky patrols. They have sensing nets above and below the barrier, too.”
”If they tried to feel every bird or bug caught in the net, their brains would fry. They probably unconsciously adjust so small things slip by.”
”Are you planning to turn into a bug or something?”
”──I turn into fog.”
Kian answered shortly, then rested his hands on the rocky table, glancing around.
”I can use Mist Form. It’s like Sarah’s… ‘Thunder,’ I think.”
”What is Thunder, anyway-nya?”
”Who knows?”
”How come you know my secrets?”
Sarah looked at him with suspicion, her eyebrows creased. Kian winked.
”I looked into you quite a bit.”
”Huh? Well, fine. But, seriously ── you can turn into fog? Not just a trick or illusion?”
”Yeah.”
Kian said that and started fiddling with ‘Silver Ice,’ shaking it off.
Then he threw on his ‘Nightshade’ coat.
’Nightshade’ is both travel gear and stealth equipment.
Kian’s Mist Form isn’t perfect. Sometimes it just looks like fog due to illusion. But if he wears the full ‘Nightshade’ set, high-speed movement becomes a kind of fake teleportation──like Mist Form enhanced.
”Watch this. …Alright, here goes.”
”Whoa!”
”U-nya!”
The warrior monk used his basic skill ‘Leap’ to move.
Serena and Ninini’s eyes widened as Kian turned his body into black mist and vanished during his ‘Leap’.
”Wha──No way-nya! …Kian, you’re serious-nya? Were you hiding your strength all this time-nya!?”
”That would make me too mean. It would mean my ego got all my work buddies killed. I trained. Plus, this gear helps too.”
”What’s this made of?”
Sarah approached to examine ‘Nightshade’.
”It’s a secret.”
”Always secrets! What’s with you, Kian? It’s so frustrating!”
”But how do you move upwards after vanishing? And how do you plan to locate the position of the invisible physical barrier?”
”The invisible barrier isn’t invisible to me, Serena. I can visualize it.”
’This one is here, okay?’
”How do you plan to jump up to the sky?”
Sarah folded her arms and glared.
”Don’t tell me you expect me to throw you up there? I’m not that strong.”
”Stuff Kian into a big tube, blast a hole under our feet, and launch him with the explosion?”
Kian shook his head, his cheeks pulled back in disgust at Serena’s terrifying idea.
”No, I’ll use this.”
Kian raised his right hand as he finished speaking.
Then, the waiting Wing Cain flapped down noisily onto the riverbank.
Sarah, Ninini, and Serena each readied their weapons as if startled, but they lowered their posture when Kian took control.
”Wing Cain, take me to the sky.”
At his command, the giant bat-like monster flew up above Kian and hovered in place.
When Kian grabbed its legs, Wing Cain flapped its wings harder and ascended into the air.
”…!””-nya” What kind of thing is this…?”
Three different expressions of shock.
Kian released his grip on Wing Cain and landed on the ground.
”The technique is an extension of controlling bats. Don’t tell anyone about it. Especially not Ms. Ninini.”
”I won’t say anything-nya. You helped Lyr and me, so I owe you-nya. But I really hate trouble-nya.”
”Before the mission, I’ll increase Wing Cain to 3.”
”If we run, this might work? If I buy horses without permission, it’s a mistake.”
”But if we have more horses or if we go too far apart, control gets hard. There’s also the risk of being shot down during infiltration. Putting Mr. Rean and Ms. Vestacia on 2 horses seems safer.”
Kian returned to the table, looked around at everyone, and spoke.
”I will use Wing Cain and Mist Form, land on a suitable tower, and take out the magician. After a bit, the barrier that magician is guarding should fall. Once it gaps open, Sarah and Ms. Ninini will follow.”
”No, I will land on another tower after Kian.”
Sarah put her hand on her chest.
”I can teleport over short distances. If I see the destination from above, I can sneak behind the magician.”
”Both of you really want to kill…”
”Ms. Serena.”
”I understand. No objections now.”
”Once we take out 2, I’ll make my move──finally-nya.”
”If it looks impossible, Ms. Ninini should go back. Kian? Can you control Wing Cain and throw Ms. Ninini out?”
”Yes, I can.”
”No, nuh-uh, I won’t stop-nya! I’ll come too-nya! If you toss me in the air, I’ll be mad forever-nya!”
”Got it.”
”Then, let’s just do the big toilet blast plan.”
Sarah looked at Kian and the others in order, then kept going.
”Before the plan, I’ll give Wolfmen warriors laxatives. While the shared toilet fills with poop and pee, we’ll blow it up.”
”How do you do that-nya?”
”I’ll use this.”
Sarah took out a small flute.
She put it in her mouth with her unsoiled hand and blew the flute at a pitch humans can’t hear. Then she pulled out a branch from somewhere, lit it on fire, and released smoke.
”Aii, Gal-shi!”
Sarah softly, sharply whispered a spell.
White smoke seemed to move toward the bushes as if guided, then spread across the open field.
”Aii, Gal-shi”
Sarah whispered again.
This time, her voice was faint and hoarse.
After a moment, she felt countless black things flying rapidly from behind the bushes.
”I recognized it ── the technique of the Insect Master they faced in Izerland!”
”The one I and Serena had defeated together.”
”Nya! Nyaa! So gross-nyaaa!”
”It’s not just Kian who can do magic tricks.”
Sarah swung the branch, and swarms of flies buzzed loudly around her.
She looked proud, but the scene was terrible.
Wing Cain, meanwhile, was drooling.
Does this Bloodsucking Kind eat bugs too?
Well, it looks like a bat… maybe it’s not impossible.
”Nordende Outbreak Fly. As the name says, it lives in Nordende, lays eggs in cherries, and loves fruit.
Sarah held some flies on her palm, wearing a wicked, witch-like smile.
”These kids have been drenched in laxatives. We’ll toss them into the enemy’s soup. Soon, mysterious stomach illnesses will spread through their camp.”
