Volume 3 Chapter 107 Infiltration Operation II

 ”Yeah.”

The meeting point is east of the swamp, at the entrance to the Great Forest.

The Bloodsucking Kind were mostly dealt with by Kian, but the journey is still dangerous. He’ll have to go alone.

Once the supplies──food, equipment, and money──are delivered to the meeting point, turn back immediately and wait near the camp. It could be even harder than what Kian’s team is facing.

”Everyone, stay safe. I’ll contact you with the bats.”

”If we’re wiped out, ask Ms. Priscilla to take over the message.”

”Yeah, you two. Even if I die, I’ll get through the Great Forest and send the word.”

Serena shook hands with each member of Kian’s group, then urged her horse toward the east side of the village.

Meanwhile, Kian and the others started moving toward the campsite from the west side of the village.

As they left the village, the evening sky slowly turned purple.

When the moon began to stand out brightly, they reached the vast reed swamp in front of the camp. A massive swarm of mosquitoes buzzed around, but Kian’s charm and Sarah’s Insect Master skill sent the leeches and insects flying away.

The 3 of them, looking toward the large dirt wall on the high ground beyond the reed swamp, donned their cloaks, masks, and cloth to cover their faces.

Sarah wore a full black robe and an okina mask.

Ninini also wore a black robe, with her face covered by the same black cloth.

Kian wrapped his entire face in bandages, disguising his skin tone so no one could guess his race.

 ”Wing Cain.”

Three black shadows appeared, blending into the twilight.

Sarah silently grabbed onto one of the Wing•Cain figures.

Ninini followed her, his face scrunching up slightly.

Kian grabbed the last one and gave a subtle signal to the others.

 ”Prepare yourself-nya. Don’t rush-nya. On 3, slowly lift off-nya.”

 ”1, 2, 3.”

 ”Nyaaahhh!?”

The Wing Cain figures suddenly shot up into the air.

While Ninini gave him the finger, Kian put on the glasses.

 His mind sharpened.

Kian felt his once humble, gentlemanly nature changing.

It was shifting into something darker──more aggressive, like he was becoming a bloodthirsty monster.

Rising into the twilight sky, he felt like an invincible vampire.

No longer the prey. He was the hunter now.

Even if the enemy was the strongest Mercenary group in the West, it didn’t matter.

’Heh heh heh… This is good. Let’s enjoy tonight’s adventure together.’

 (Finally, a smile.)

 ’Huh?’

(You’ve been sounding so sad since the swamp battle.)

Kian glared at the distant reed marshes, growing further away.

(Sadness doesn’t suit you. Keep laughing, cocky and cool, like you always do.)

 ’Kian, you…’

(Mission starts now. Once we’re higher than the magician’s detection range, signal. Don’t forget to highlight any invisible barriers.)

 ’Y-Yeah.’

Kian clenched the muscles around his eyes tightly.

His black eyes slowly turned blood-red.

 The vampire’s vision awakened.

Kian saw 3 layers of a net, outlined in red, filling his sight.

The entire campsite was covered in the web.

 A massive, wide barrier.

It was more than enough to defend against an army with limited aerial options.

But for Kian, with his vampire abilities, it was practically nothing.

(Like a poorly made meat pie.)

 ’Heh.’

Vampires, since the dawn of civilization, had always slipped through barriers and invaded homes to drink blood, ensuring their survival.

For them, sneaking past barriers was as natural as breathing.

’We’re above the magician’s detection height now. Moving over the campsite is safe.’

Kian looked back at Sarah and Ninini, signaling with a glance.

Ninini, as usual, was flipping him off.

Kian turned his focus back to the campsite.

He spotted a tent to the southwest.

 There were several.

The shared toilet was covered in a distinctive fabric, easy to spot, but Rean’s prison wasn’t visible.

However, if they landed on the lookout tower, they could pinpoint the guard’s position.

 ”────”

Sarah softly chants a magic spell into the wind high above.

Small magic golems shoot out from her sleeves, floating away.

The golems spread tiny cloths over their heads and carefully slip past the barrier net, wavering as they go.

 Soon, they disappear from sight.

(If the toilet explodes, it’s time to drop down.)

Kian takes a deep breath, steadying himself.

Wing Cain circles slowly, inching closer to the tower on top of their target.

After a while──*boom*──a small tear in the tent of the shared toilet shelter, falling with a crash.

Not enough──inside, terrible, gross waste gets blasted up everywhere.

It’s like a brown geyser erupting.

A tiny shadow of their camp moves franticly, and desperate screams echo from all directions.

Kian signals, releasing Wing Cain’s legs.

* * *

His black coat flutters in the evening sky.

The summer sky, cold and distant at the northern edge.

Kian glides through the air like a vampire.

Finds a weak spot, turns into Mist Form, and easily slips past the triple barrier.

Over there, Sarah’s teleport activated just as the magicians’ senses cut out from the big toilet blast. She also boosted Ninini’s body to become a muscular, catlike beast. Kian and Sarah can take out the magician any moment now and drop down.

’Ha ha ha! What a view!’

(It’s pretty… the sky, and the land.)

 Melts into the sky.

 Dissolves into darkness.

Becomes a free wind, unbound by anything, and swoops into the enemy’s heart.

Kian, puzzled, quietly lands behind a magician looking down from the tower, then snaps their neck in one swift move.

On the other side of the base, Sarah’s figure glows red──highlighted.

She seems to have only taken their focus, not killed the magician.

(That’s too soft. Enemies must be killed.)

Kian jams his finger into the brain of a dead Wolfman magician, activating his vampire spell.

This was the same trick used at the start, to finish off Funnelwing and the others.

Even with the Wolfmen’s strong magic power, once they’re dead, it’s possible to turn them into puppets from the inside out.

But the magic power fades over time. Once it’s gone, they revert back to their original dead bodies. Plus, being dead, they can only make simple movements.

Kian’s eyes glowed red with a phosphorescent light.

The dead magician rose again with a borrowed life, nothing but a meat puppet.

Kian turned back into mist, melting into the underbrush’s shadow and moving downward.
