Volume 3 Chapter 108 Infiltration Operation III
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”How many people came?”
”Three-nya. The other one is breaking the runes on the outside wall to make a safe escape route-nya. They’ll be here soon-nya.”
”Who… is that Azraelian?”
”Who? No way… you can’t see-nya?”
Ninini stared in shock at Rean.
Rean grimaced in pain and shook his head.
”His stomach was stabbed.”
”Sorry-nya. I’ll untie you right away. Hang on-nya.”
”It’s done. Next, the legs.”
”Please-nya.”
The leg chains are tied to iron stakes stuck in the ground.
The stakes are just iron blocks with magic language carved into them. If they aim at the connection to the mithril chains, they can break them. But with their current weapons, they’d probably chip blades trying multiple hits. It might make noise and get them caught.
They could try pulling out the stakes. But if they’re running, carrying a weak and exhausted Rean, they shouldn’t keep heavy stuff behind.
’The worst is cutting his legs. Stop the bleeding, you should be able to.’
(That’s the worst-case plan. But Ninini wouldn’t agree, and Rean would have to retire from adventuring.)
Once, he was that annoying guy who kicked Kian out of the party. Still, Rean’s ability is undeniable. Because of him, dangerous monsters in East End are fewer. The adventurers, who might have died before their time, are now hunting safely and growing steadily. The current prosperity of the Adventurer Guild is thanks not only to Friedrich’s reforms but also to Rean and the ‘Lion’s Companion’.
Kian, as an adventurer and warrior, deeply respects the achievements he made.
He and his ‘Lion’s Companion’ are vital for East End’s future.
”Do you know where Vest is-nya?”
”…”
Rean nodded faintly, just a little.
There was no time to think about Vestacia in this state.
(His heartbeat was too weak… Even if they managed to escape to the Great Forest, could they survive crossing it?)
’We’ll think about what comes after we’ve escaped this danger.’
”What about the armor and the Horn Cup necklace?”
Kian unlocked the left foot, then moved on to the right, asking.
Several men passed by right in front of the tent, talking among themselves.
”Rean, you can’t remove the Horn Cup, can you-nya? Was it stolen-nya?”
”That armor can only be worn by Rean… If he throws it away, it should come back to him… right? But…”
Could such armor really exist?
When Kian had been with ‘Lion’s Companion,’ he never saw Rean take any real damage. He had never seen him remove the armor.
”And the magic sword… It’s gone too-nya. I really want to get that high-performance gear back.”
The crowd was getting thicker.
There was a tense murmur around them.
The explosion from the shared restroom had calmed down, and cleanup was underway.
”It’s open.”
”Here too… there, done.”
The chains had been wrapped tightly around his stomach, but Ninini unlocked the last one and carefully unraveled it.
Rean staggered and almost fell forward from the support pillar.
Kian instinctively moved to catch him──then suddenly, Ninini shoved him aside.
”────!?”
”Get away──”
Her voice cut off.
There was a sickening *crack* as bones shattered, and Ninini was sent flying sideways in her robe.
She slammed into the white tent wall, her back hitting it with such force that she fell 2 meters, landing hard.
”Ms. Ninini! ──Rean, what the hell were you thinking?”
Kian glared at the blonde man who had just knocked the Beastman woman Adventurer aside, drawing his long sword from the Night Wraith.
The man, wrapped in dirty bandages, cracked his neck, then checked his wrist with his other hand.
”Ugh… Damn…”
Ninini took a punch in the stomach from Rean and drooled as he writhed in pain.
Kian moved to shield Ninini.
”Take off those bandages, Azraelian.”
Rean swung his right hand and pulled out a bishop’s staff or shakujo from thin air.
No, it looked more like a war mace.
The tip had a gemstone attached, making it able to smash enemies’ heads.
That weapon looked familiar.
”You…”
”────”
Rean smiled, raising the corner of his mouth.
He put his hand behind his ear and suddenly peeled back the skin of his face with a slick.
A handsome Wolfman male appeared from underneath.
* * *
The Wolfman’s form flickered, and in the next instant, he was dressed in heavy magician’s armor──white fur, fancy and thick.
At the same time, the white cloth of the tent tore and was pulled away, revealing countless Wolfman warriors.
Several campfires cast flickering lights on Kian and the Wolfman.
”During the day, we were attacked by someone.”
The magician man opened his mouth to speak.
Kian narrowed his eyes.
(This voice, it’s the same as the lich I fought in the ancient temple. No mistake.)
The man had a striking hairstyle: shaved on the sides, with long silver hair on top tied into a ponytail at the back.
The shaved sides bore blue tattoo-like markings shaped like fangs.
He also had a tattoo around his neck──something that looked like a plant.
He extended his hand, which was adorned with rings, and from his palm appeared several dead flies.
”Nordende’s Outbreak’s fly. It eats fruit as its main food, doesn’t go after rotten meat or feces. But it was coated in laxative substance all over.”
”────”
”Take off those bandages, Azraelian.”
It’s almost certain he identified the race just from the skin of his hand, but more likely, he figured out this guy was a lich who had seen Kian before.
Just as Kian remembers the color of the magician’s power, this guy must remember Kian’s special magic wave too.
”Why is an East End Adventurer snooping around us?”
The magician glanced at Rean’s torn skin, his light blue eyes flashing with anger.
”Don’t you know what happens to those who defy ‘Storm Herd’?”
Behind Kian, Ninini staggered to her feet. She tried to ready her weapon, but her physical ability enhancement had already worn off. Her breathing was clearly labored, suggesting severe internal damage.
”You’re Barghest, right?”
As Kian asked, he assessed the mercenaries’ positions.
They pointed their short spear tips at him.
(They noticed Sarah’s bugs. But judging by the toilet waste, many soldiers must have ingested the laxative. They should be weaker than usual.)
That’s where their chance lies.
”———”
The magician didn’t answer, instead gesturing to the two warriors behind Kian.
’Kian’
(Stay silent.)
The mercenaries’ circle widened.
The tent’s fabric was completely removed, leaving only the frame.
