Volume 3 Chapter 111 Yelmar’s Proposal I
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”You know him?”
”I met him on a different quest before.”
Kian pulls out a business card that Yelmar handed him from his pocket.
Sarah lets out a “hmph” and opens her eyes wide as she covers her mouth.
”He was conducting experiments related to the Bloodsucking Kind in a village at the edge of East End. Stuff like raising multiple Sword Cains and creating werewolves. He had the former Head Magician of Izerland, Natasha, as his collaborator.”
”I see. ────Kian, just between us, there’s a bad rumor about ‘Storm Herd’.”
Sarah glances over at Serena’s back as she keeps watch over the soup and mug.
She continues.
”Whispers about human experiments to create monsters have been going around the underground circles for a while.”
”Since when?”
”Maybe 6 or 7 years ago. It’s said that Glen’s son, Ozeas, was involved with your noble family to create these monsters.”
”My… noble family?”
”Yes. Since the time of the last active Twelve Divine Generals, Ozeas has been said to have business ties. After that, the operation was supposedly handed over to the current Twelve Divine Generals, but anyone spreading such rumors was thoroughly eliminated. Unless you go back to your noble family and steal the merchant logs or transaction records hidden in the vault, those secrets will remain buried in darkness forever.”
”……!”
Sarah whispers in Azrael language to the speechless Kian.
”I’m sorry.”
”Why is Sarah apologizing?”
”Because of me. As an agent of Azrael, an apostle to eliminate corruption within──’Azrael’s Death Sword User’, I should have stopped the inhumane experiments with my sword. But I respected my father Shajar’s wishes and turned a blind eye to the corruption within Azrael.”
”──────”
”Of course, I was also afraid that Nakash’s family would be politically destroyed… I’m sorry for staying silent until now.”
”Sarah, let’s talk about that later. Right now, we should discuss whether we should try to communicate with Yelmar.”
”Yeah.”
Kian, while hugging Sarah’s shoulders as she nodded with a downcast face, remembered the Wolfmen mercenary they met in Châtillon.
He think his name was Randy, or something like that.
He was hired by Shajar and accompanied Maribel during the talks.
According to the story from the battle with Natra, he supposedly escaped like mist.
What’s more, they said his body smelled of death, just like the Owl’s corpse soldiers.
Considering Sarah’s story, it must have been a monster supplied by ‘Storm Herd’.
Whether they reused a corpse or modified him while still alive, it’s clear that he was created through experiments that severely violate religious feelings toward the dead and personal dignity.
And Shajar, who hired such an illegal experiment product (Sarah’s father), wasn’t completely uninvolved. While not fully, he must have touched the dark side of Azrael and ‘Storm Herd’.
”I also agree with trying to communicate with Yelmar. I want to save Ms. Vestacia as well. Without Ms. Vestacia, ‘Lion’s Companion’ wouldn’t be ‘Lion’s Companion’. Just like Rean, Ms. Vestacia is irreplaceable.”
Ninini, who struggles with thinking, supports Lyritisse in elevating Rean.
Without Vestacia, ‘Lion’s Companion’ wouldn’t be able to stop Rean’s rampage or even relax and reset their minds and bodies during their free time.
She was a high elf with a difficult personality, but it was actually Vestacia who secretly led ‘Lion’s Companion’, a group of serious individuals.
”Well, if Mr. Rean goes back alone, the quest will fail, right?”
”It won’t be a failure, but it won’t be a perfect job. And I can’t accept that.”
’You’ve just barely escaped death, yet you’ve really become…’
(You must realize how foolish it was to challenge Oswald.)
’Indeed, it’s because you’re a fool that you’ve become a hero of Izerland.’
He sighs, as if putting on ‘glasses’ without any medicine.
”Yelmar is dangerous, but if we stay here, their threat will linger over us. Therefore, as you say, we should make the first move and try to communicate with them.”
Placing his hand on Sarah’s shoulder, Kian continued.
”The rescue mission really showcased your strengths, Sarah. With both of us, we won’t be overwhelmed by Yelmar’s forces. We can negotiate as equals.”
”I’m not sure about that… But if they attacked us and kept watch instead, there must be some reason for it. There must be a reason they had to send such amateurs to monitor us. Negotiation seems quite possible to me.”
”We’ve reached an agreement among us. I’ll keep an eye on those 2. Sarah, explain to Serena and Ms. Ninini about the dialogue with Yelmar. If they have any valid objections, let me know.”
”Understood.”
Nodding, Kian turned his attention back to Serena, who was conversing with the others on the other side of the barrier.
* * *
Serena agreed to try talking with Yelmar.
Ninini also agreed, knowing that Rean couldn’t cross the Great Forest and that there was still hope for saving Vestacia.
So, Fuuro was sent back to Yelmar’s base as a liaison, and Mag was to be imprisoned at the base in the otherworldly forest.
Between Mag and Fuuro, Mag is the smarter and more deceitful one.
Sarah judged that Fuuro was more suitable as a liaison.
They considered using magic inscribed on a card to communicate directly with Yelmar, but Sarah opposed it, and they decided not to use it.
She said that the business cards were remade by modifying various aspects of the original ‘Storm Herd’ magician’s card technique.
After that, Kian and the others slept like mud inside Sarah’s barrier for about a day (during that time, they left a message in the dream space asking for help in rescuing Rean and setting up a teleportation gate to transport him).
Only Sarah stayed awake, tirelessly gathering Elixir materials in the Great Forest for Rean, and then she scouted the swamp area. Sarah, who had always been a superhuman gorilla, now had an even more monstrous body after fusing with Wraith. However, Kian couldn’t push her too hard, so after her scouting, he forced her to sleep and stood guard around the barrier himself.
Later that morning, after another half day passed, Kian received a letter carried by the bat he’d attached to Fuuro. It was signed by Yelmar with a short note saying, “Wait at the Great Forest’s lake in the daytime.”
After discussing, it was decided that Ninini would stay inside the barrier with Rean, while Kian, Sarah, Serena, and the hostage Mag would head to the lake to meet up.
The Great Forest was supposed to be home to dangerous carnivorous monsters and poisonous plant monsters, but it seemed that Yelmar’s ‘Storm Herd’ had cleared the monsters along the swamp route. There were no monster attacks on the way to the lake. It was far safer than the swamp, and they were almost surprised by how easy it was.
When the group reached the lake, Yelmar was already waiting on the opposite shore.
As Kian pushed through the underbrush and approached the water’s edge, Yelmar waved his hand from across the lake.
”Can I come over?”
”What do you think, Sarah?”
”It’s fine. Whatever he does, I can handle it. If things go wrong, I’ll use my Secret Technique ‘Skyrend,’ so stay back.”
”Secret Technique ‘Skyrend?’ Not ‘Thunder’?”
”I’ve also mastered the ‘impact’ stance up to the final level.”
”I see.”
Sarah waved her hand broadly.
Then Yelmar signaled to his companions, and they started to circle around the lake.
A total of ten people.
One of them was the messenger, a boy named Fuuro.
Yelmar and his group were dressed in the same tight black suits as when they had first met.
A greatsword, likely a magic sword, was hanging from his back.
It had seemed big back then, but now, facing the High Warlord of the ‘Storm Herd,’ both the magic sword and Yelmar himself appeared very small.
(He still looks strong… It’d be fun to fight him.)
(Maybe I should just do it… should I?)
The voice of ‘glasses’ whispered in his mind.
Kian shook his head, brushing away the distracting thoughts.
As he did, he saw his reflection in the water at his feet, with ‘glasses’ overlaying it, and it made him feel sick.
The voice of ‘glasses’ laughed and vanished from Kian’s mind.
