Volume 3 Chapter 233 No Goodbye

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Cracks appeared on the surface of the thorns from within.

Pressing the regenerated right hand against it, the tear spread to Kian’s feet, overflowing with white light from the outside. A moment of stasis. And then, collapse.

If the hard surface of the thorns was an eggshell, Kian, bursting forth from it, was the reborn figure depicted in a religious painting.

After a sharp cracking sound like bark peeling away, with the explosive blast of the shell, Kian spread both arms and descended into the world.

 ”What──” Sarah whispered.

 ”──Niiiii!?” Linca gasped.

Before him stood Sarah and Linca, back to back, protecting each other. However, Sarah was severely injured, her body torn apart, on the verge of death. In contrast, Linca was locked in a blade clash with the deformed Erynys, wielding the silver dagger Oathbound Misericorde.

Just off the mountain path—beyond the trees, a headless dragonewt brandished a war hammer.

 ”Kian…! No way…”

Erynys, locked in battle with Linca, moved her jagged-toothed mouth in disbelief.

 ”──────! Haaah!” Linca shouted.

”──────!? Tch! Did I let my guard down?” Erynys snarled.

 A tense pause.

Linca pushed back Erynys, who was captivated by Kian, descending gently from the sky, breaking through the thorn shell. She quickly formed a hand sign and shouted, “The Crimson Pact!” Countless earthen spears surged toward Erynys, who was regaining its stance with its bark-like right arm thrust out.

Furthermore, Erynys was knocked aside by Nue, who swooped down from the sky, tumbling down the steep mountain path.

 ”Ugh…” Sarah collapsed.

Linca attempted to deflect the dragonewt that flew in like a cannonball with an earthen wall. The wall crumbled, but Linca caught Renaud around the abdomen with both arms, stopping him. After a moment, she changed the direction of the force and threw him back into the forest.

”Linca, are you okay?” Kian asked urgently.

”Does this look okay to you!? It’s impossible now! I’m going to die! Where have you been until now!? Please stop moving properly!” she snapped.

”I’m glad to hear that. Now, please continue to deal with Renaud and… the Thorn Demon—that big one that seems about to revive,” Kian said firmly.

”Haaah!? Were you even listening? You’re a terrible taskmaster──” Linca snapped back.

Linca had approached to confront, but she noticed the brown right arm extending from Kian’s tattered inner clothing.

While the left arm bore a complex black tattoo, the right arm had a distinctly different white tattoo. Linca’s eyes widened, but she quickly turned her gaze towards the forest.

Beyond the trees, the corpse of the dragonewt had revived.

Although the strategist Renaud lacked a brain, his trained body, ingrained techniques, and the performance of the magical sword-axe were extraordinary. Linca knew she had to fight seriously or be killed.

Meanwhile, from below the pass, the death throes of Nue echoed. It seemed that Erynys had dealt with it.

Erynys must not be allowed to approach here. They needed to push it back down the mountain road—to the Village of Cookley Clay—and defeat it there.

 ”────!” Linca sensed a presence.

Suddenly, a pack-carrying Wraith descended from the sky.

Linca had thought it had been defeated by Erynys when it was swallowed by the thorns, but it was still alive. The black spirit form dropped a silver greatsword in front of her.

 Linca’s eyes widened.

”Balmung! The dragon-slaying weapon of Arminus! Did you bring it from the Castle?” she exclaimed.

”Linca, use that. —Pack carrier, thank you. You are the greatest contributor to this battle,” Kian said.

The Wraith slipped into Kian’s tattered clothing. Kian thanked the Wraith once more for continuing to carry the load and pulled out a black curved sword from within.

The weapon the nameless swordsman had been swinging all along.

A sword with no special effects, just sturdy.

Now that Talia was lending her strength, it was uncertain how much of a fighting force this would be, but it was very reassuring.

Connection with the Spiritual Vein completed. Magic power charging. Approaching Erynys may risk severing the connection. Be careful, a calm voice echoed in his mind.

This was the voice of the Rose Garden Keeper—no, Princess Talia.

It seemed to have been absorbed into the missing part of the soul in the right arm, but like the former “glasses,” it appeared to have a will of its own and was willing to assist Kian.

’I told you, I will fight too. You are not alone. Let’s go together, Kian.’

 (Thank you)

 He kicked off the ground.

 Linca no longer needed words.

Feeling the Thorn Demon slowly trying to rise behind him, Kian jumped high and far up the steep slope.

In the slightly thickened morning sunlight, he spread his arms wide to the infinite sky.

The left arm cloaked in dark energy, the right arm enveloped in fierce white light.

A wing-like energy erupted from his back.

Erynys, who had lost a wing in the earlier confrontation with Kian, seemed to have been pushed back to the fields in front of the Village of Cookley Clay, just as before the battle began. She no longer climbed the mountain path, instead staring intently up at Kian, who descended from the sky.

”I’ve come to greet you, ‘glasses‘,” he hissed.

”Kian…, you are such a persistent man. Is your ego too strong to be absorbed? No, it doesn’t matter anymore,” Erynys sneered.

She twisted and moved her legs, which resembled entwined thorny tendrils, and stepped forward with her right foot. She drew the 6th magic sword Mistcloud (Kasumigumo) and the 7th magic sword Water Moon (Mizuki) into both hands.

The magic power from her grotesque body, exceeding 3 meters, rapidly diminished, nearing depletion.

However, she softly murmured, “O song of the stars,” and began to draw magic power from the earth.

Blue lines of light ran across the green grassland, crawling toward Erynys’s feet. What appeared to be blue currents crawled up her grotesque legs, gathering around her abdomen and disappearing.

It was likely a remnant of her soul, which was originally a spirit.

Even having fallen to a mere vampire, she could still receive support of magic power from the Spiritual Vein.

This was a trait that overcame the disadvantage of vampires, who could not generate magic power on their own.

Being able to wield the powers of a vampire without any drawbacks, and even freely use Princess Talia’s magic sword, she might be a more powerful being than the spirit Kharab of Black Onyx.

 (But)

 ’Sanctum deployment.’

 ”What…!?”

Beside Kian’s right arm, a blue butterfly danced, and the illusion of an extraordinarily beautiful girl with golden hair appeared.

Clad in a white battle outfit (Battle Cross) like Erynys, she spread her delicate arms and offered a prayer to this planet.

Temporarily severed the connection with Erynys’s Spiritual Vein. Restrictions were placed on the absorption of magic power.

 ”Is it you, Talia?”

 ’Erynys, I’m sorry.’

”Why…? Why is this happening? Why? …Do you hate this one so much?” Erynys cried.

Talia shook her head beside Kian.

’Because I love you, I will stop you.’

 ”────────, …” Erynys’s voice faltered.

”Will you surrender, ‘glasses‘?” Kian challenged, pointing the tip of his black curved sword at the grotesque woman.

Erynys’s bulging eyes distorted, and her mouth, torn to the ears, was tightly shut.

”That’s our line. If the Demon is restored, Linca can no longer hold out. Once the user of Misericorde is defeated, there will be no one left on this land who can defeat us,” she spat.

”Then, shall we fight?” Kian asked coldly.

Erynys sneered, “Is there any reason to surrender here? Have you forgotten that you were thoroughly beaten twice?”

Kian met her gaze firmly. “I haven’t forgotten. Even so, I’m challenging you.”

”If you want to play the savior that badly, do it elsewhere! Don’t act like my evil spirit!” Erynys spat, her voice sharp.

”Saving isn’t just for the world,” Kian replied calmly, pointing to the shadow at Talia’s feet.

Around Talia, countless white orbs began to swirl and rise.

 The air shimmered and warped.

It was as if electricity crackled before his eyes, revealing the shadows of countless people—this was the collective prayer of the people from Count Cain’s territory.

”I’m saving you too,” Kian declared, his voice steady and cold. “I will stop you—the one who hurts others by killing and destroying civilization. That’s why I fight you, ‘glasses.’”

Erynys’s eyes flickered, a tremor betraying her surprise. But she quickly masked it with snarling fury, baring her fangs. “You’re quite the irritating one.”

A sudden dark magic radiated from Erynys’s body, like the bursting of the Spiritual Vein. The pressure was so intense Kian felt his face tingle; his legs threatened to wobble.

”I no longer need your brain. I will erase you from this world. Not a single fragment of your soul will remain. Prepare yourself!” she growled.

* * *

 The final battle had begun.

Before the backdrop of the Village of Cookley Clay, Erynys infused magic into her rapier—the Sixth Magic Sword, Mistcloud (Kasumigumo). Its power was to create clones, illusions both real and fake; to defeat her, one had to strike all the clones at once.

With fluid motion, Erynys shifted sideways, and suddenly nineteen grotesque mirror images of her appeared, all wielding their rapiers upright.

 Twenty Erynys figures surrounded Kian.

In response, Kian murmured, “Song of the Stars.”

Beside him, Talia offered a prayer. Magic coalesced around her in the form of fluttering blue butterflies.

A blue line of light traced the ground, converging near Kian’s bare right arm.

”Spirit of the White Great Wing, lend me your power. Third Magic Sword, Heavenbreaker (Tenkaibaraki). Draw!” he intoned.

The hard metal of the sword appeared in his hand, the grip smooth and welcoming, as if it pulled his fingers in.

The small knife that had been empty in his right hand was now firmly grasped.

Erynys’s eyes widened at the sudden disappearance of the third knife—the Heavenbreaker—from among the five illusory magic swords surrounding her.

She quickly leveled Mistcloud and Water Moon (Mizuki), charging forward.

The twenty grotesque forms advanced, each towering over three meters tall, trampling grass and kicking up clouds of dust.

Thorny vines writhed around Kian, rising to ensnare him.

 (Position confirmation)

In his mental map of the battlefield, Kian locked the positions of all enemies in a fraction of a second.

 * Front at two o’clock, 30 meters out.

 * Others at 20, 15 meters.

 * More at 25, 21, and 18 meters to the two o’clock.

 * Several at 28, 26, and 21 meters to eleven o’clock.

 * Five circling at three o’clock.

 * Six in the sky, shifting their axes warily; distances ranged from 30 to 41 meters.

 * Seventy-two thorn whips snaked across the terrain.

There was not a single centimeter of deviation.

Prediction of closing moves was complete.

 Kian whispered, “Control complete.”

The spirit script appeared etched on the knife’s blade, and a thousand white blades manifested behind him, aligned like a deadly chorus.

Erynys’s closest clone twisted her face in surprise as she charged. Her lips moved, “As expected, a monster…!”

Kian shouted, “Sweep Shot!” and then added, “Accept my feelings, ‘glasses’!”

He raised his left hand, gripping the black curved sword, and his right hand, holding Heavenbreaker, like a conductor leading a symphony.

At the next instant, following Kian’s will, a thousand white blades shot forth from the sky.

The thorny vines were completely shredded.

Erynys herself—whether charging or flanking—was sliced by the blades, not just stabbed but blown apart by the force.

The sweeping Heavenbreaker attack brought devastating destruction to the open field, as if thousands of explosive rounds had rained down.

 ”Ugh… Nooo! Haah!” Erynys howled.

Six clones hovered in the sky. Two farthest—over forty meters away—were protected by Water Moon‘s swift counterattack before the blades could reach them.

Thirty blades attacked the two clones, but were absorbed into the wicked sword, disappearing as if swallowed whole.

One second later, two red beams shot from the clones toward Kian.

 (Secret Technique)

 His left hand called death.

Within the illusion, someone seemed to shout, “Go!”

Kian twirled the black curved sword.

 An energy circle blossomed.

Lowering his stance, he drew the two red beams into the circular ki shield.

The potent magic power swirled inside the shield, redirecting the attacks.

This was the ultimate Wall technique, the secret art of the Seventh Magic Sword mastered by Linca—Azrael’s Seventh Secret Technique.

Mirror Moon.

Water Moon deflected the Heavenbreaker‘s attack, and now the red counterattack beams were returned with Mirror Moon.

Erynys raised Water Moon to strike again, but before she could, Talia lifted her right hand.

Her golden hair floated softly; ruby eyes shimmered with a phosphorescent glow.

She prayed to the spirit that granted the Seventh Magic Sword.

”Waves of mercy, lend me your strength. Seventh Magic Sword, Water Moon (Mizuki). Draw.”

”Damn it!” Erynys spat, throwing the fading Crimson Cursed Sword and diving toward the ground.

One clone barely dodged Kian’s Mirror Moon counterattack beam, but another’s head was obliterated outright.

 All clones vanished.

 The thorny vines were shattered.

”Song of the Stars!” Erynys howled, landing on the grass in a defensive stance.

Her legs, composed of thorny vines, forced deep into the earth, trying to break the sanctum Talia had deployed.

 She absorbed magic power.

At the same time, she prayed into the left hand that had discarded Water Moon.

”Come! Third Magic Sword, Heavenbreaker (Tenkaibaraki)!”

 ”Tch.”

”Kian, it’s being taken!” Talia warned.

 ”Roger that,” Kian replied silently.

No warning was needed. He felt the small knife unwind from his right hand like tendrils of blood smoke.

Grabbing the hilt of the Seventh Magic Sword, Water Moon (Mizuki), stuck in the ground, Kian rushed toward Erynys, trying to regain his footing.

”Come! Seventh Magic Sword, Water Moon (Mizuki)! …Guh!?”

Erynys’s eyes distorted as if in pain.

Sustaining the magic swords demanded massive power.

Her final spirit stone was shattered by Kian’s attack, leaving her unable to maintain the power absorbed from Song of the Stars.

After manifesting Mistcloud and trying to reclaim Heavenbreaker and Water Moon, her energy was spent.

 ”‘Glasses’!” she snarled.

 ”Guuuuu!” came the clash.

 A sharp metallic ring echoed.

Erynys’s rapier, Mistcloud, collided with the borrowed bloodline weapon Water Moon, sparking violently.

”Damn it! Stars… song! Magic power…!” she hissed.

”Oooooooooooooooooooo!” Kian grunted, refusing to let magic power slip away.

He slammed the black curved sword from his left hand into her rapier, pouring all his strength downward.

 ”Ugh…!”

Erynys’s knife vanished. She braced the rapier with both hands; the stalemate held.

Suddenly, her thorny, vine-like hair lifted, the sharp ends aimed like spears at Kian’s back, surrounding him.

 ”Oooooo! Deaaaahhh!!” Erynys screamed.

 ”Guaaaah!?” Kian gasped.

To break through, to cut, to tear—

Before her hair could impale him, Kian delivered a fierce headbutt to her forehead.

Using the recoil, he slashed diagonally from her shoulder to her waist, cutting deep.

Blood sprayed, and Erynys staggered backward.

 He pressed the assault.

With a returning stroke, he severed her right arm—it resembled a gnarled tree branch.

Then, spinning the blade, he cut off her left arm raised in defense.

”Tch…” Erynys cursed, leaping back with a significant distance between them.

At the same time, countless thorny vines emerged from Kian’s feet.

 ”Sanctum, redeploy,” Talia ordered.

The vines vanished as if swept away by the wind.

Twenty meters ahead, Erynys was deploying magic swords besides Water Moon (Mizuki).

She regenerated her right arm and reached for the first magic sword, Funeral Dance (Soukoku Kagura), a soul-cutting blade.

”I wouldn’t let it happennnn!” he shouted fiercely.

 Kian stepped in swiftly.

 Secret Technique: Shadow Pursuit.

 A miraculous leap.

He severed Erynys’s right arm once again.

”O song of the stars… spirits, please lend me your power!” Kian called.

The six magic swords surrounding Erynys, previously phantom-like, trembled and solidified.

Erynys’s eyes widened in shock as she glanced around at the blades.

She jumped back to escape, but found herself trapped—six swords materialized around her, their blades sinking deeply into her flesh.

 ”────!” she screamed.

The soul-cutting Funeral Dance was lodged deep in her abdomen.

”Taliaaaaaaaaaaa!” Erynys cried out with resentment.

Her eyes bloodshot, thorns sprouted across her body.

Suddenly, thick tentacles burst forth, breaking through Talia’s Sanctum barrier.

Talia slashed at the tentacles with the remaining Water Moon (Mizuki) in her hand.

”Demon, come!” Erynys roared, spraying dark blood as she glared up the ridge, her hair wild and tangled.

”Incorporate this one! Become one!” she commanded.

The morning sun was suddenly blocked.

Kian, having cut the last vine, took a defensive stance, gripping the black curved sword and Water Moon (Mizuki) tightly.

A giant figure landed with a violent tremor.

 The shockwave blew everything away.

However, the cursed sword Water Moon (Mizuki) absorbed the destructive vibrations as if they were long-range attacks—its power was truly extraordinary.

”Fuhahahahahaha! Good! Eat me! Together, let’s crush the earth!” Erynys laughed maniacally.

As the tremors subsided, Kian looked up.

The Thorn Demon, its body mangled from Linca’s meteor strike, stood like an unyielding wall.

Floating in front of its chest was Erynys, entwined by countless tentacles.

The thorny limbs wrapped around Erynys’s limbs and sank into the Demon’s chest.

Laughing wildly, Erynys was consumed by the thick, thorny flesh.

 ”────!” Kian gritted his teeth.

”Kian! Talia! This is the end! Magic power fused with the Thorn Demon can be infinitely harvested! Now, I will erase you all—along with this Izerland!” Erynys bellowed.

 The Thorn Demon grew enormous.

Erynys and the Demon fused—what had been a vague mud-like shape now had eyes and a nose resembling Erynys’s face, with countless tentacles flowing like wild hair.

Near its shoulders fluttered small, shadowy figures—likely swarms of Wing Cain.

White clouds drifted around its face.

 Enormous.

 Unfathomably enormous.

 Bigger than Arminus or Renaud.

”Fuhahahahahaha!” Erynys’s deep laugh shook the very earth beneath them.

Don’t give up. Don’t be afraid. Stand against it, Talia’s voice echoed in Kian’s mind.

 ”Okay,” Kian nodded firmly.

He sheathed his black curved sword and gripped the Crimson Cursed Sword Water Moon (Mizuki) with both hands.

 ”Disappear! Kian Vahid!” she shouted.

Red currents coursed through the Demon’s body.

Kian looked up at the far-off Thorn Demon.

Light rose from its belly to its throat, gathering in the face shaped like Erynys’s.

It was likely a massive magic attack that would scorch the earth far and wide.

(Discard your fear. This body is a single sword.)

 He emptied his mind.

 He swung the red blade.

It’s alright, I’m with you, Talia’s voice reassured him.

 He advanced.

 Struck back the enemy’s attack.

 The Demon howled.

The red light converging in its mouth formed a sphere—and it fired directly at them.

 ”OOOOOOOOOOOO!” Kian shouted.

The red light burned their vision.

 But they endured.

There was a future beyond this.

 Don’t retreat.

 Don’t be afraid.

Hesitate, and you will be defeated!

 ”Now! Strike back!” Talia called.

In sync, Kian swung his blade down.

Before the red sphere could vanish, he shot a beam back with more than double its power.

 ”Fool!” Erynys howled.

Kian’s red light rushed toward the Thorn Demon—but before it could strike, it was absorbed into the Demon’s chest, vanishing.

The Thorn Demon’s ability: it absorbed magic attacks and converted them into its own power.

Kian clenched his lips, holding his cursed sword poised.

(I see, then the aim of the “glasses” is…)

”Amplify magic power with Water Moon (Mizuki)! Your body will evaporate before you can endure! By then, the power will be enough to erase all of Izerland! Now, now, next! If you don’t shoot back, this land will disappear!” Erynys taunted.

(Shit, what should I do?) Kian thought.

”It’s fine. Prepare yourself,” Talia assured.

 (But)

”It’s fine. She’ll make it in time,” Talia said confidently.

 ”…! I see, that’s right,” Kian breathed.

”Make sure you shoot back properly, Kian!” Talia urged.

Red electricity crackled through the Demon’s body.

Its abdomen glowed with a poisonous sheen, magic power rising toward its throat.

 Erynys’s triumphant laughter echoed.

Kian gripped Water Moon (Mizuki) tighter.

”Second shot! Take this!” he shouted.

 The Demon’ opened.

A red sphere formed before its mouth.

After charging briefly, the Demon fired a second beam.

This one was thicker, more intense—a torrent of death nearly blinding Kian.

He readied Water Moon (Mizuki) but feared whether he could endure the heat.

”It’s fine,” a dignified voice said softly.

”Sir Kian!” The sweet scent of eastern incense brushed lightly against his nose.

Linca had come to his side.

”I’ll shoot back. Match with me. The absorption resistance effect of Oathbound Misericorde,” she declared.

 Red light flickered.

 Linca’s voice barely reached him.

If he opened his mouth further, the heat would burn him.

He closed his eyes and stepped forward.

 He felt his body burn.

Fear not. God loves courage.

 ”Now!”

”WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!” Kian charged forward like a dancer.

 He stepped in.

The red light vanished from his cursed sword.

 Heat threatened to explode.

He glared at the towering Demon.

 He would crush it.

His target: Erynys, absorbed in the Demon’s chest.

”The Crimson Pact!” Linca’s hand pressed onto his left hand.

 Kian screamed.

 ”────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────!!!!!!!”

 He shook it off.

The anti-magic absorption effect strengthened the counterattack.

Water Moon (Mizuki) fired a destructive beam straight at the Demon.

 Erynys screamed.

This time, the red light was not absorbed.

It crashed into the thorny chest.

 The giant Demon swayed violently.

 It roared, burning fiercely.

 Erynys screamed.

This time, the red light was not absorbed.

It crashed into the thorny chest.

 The giant Demon swayed violently.

 It roared, burning fiercely.

Stretching both arms toward them, the giant’s back curled slightly.

 And then—

The red beam obliterated the upper half of the Demon’s torso.

Piercing through the clouds, it caused the red light to explode against the blue sky.

It was like the end of the world.

A scene reminiscent of a fairy tale.

From both hands, Water Moon (Mizuki) vanished like blood smoke.

The lower half of the giant swayed slowly, glowing red as it disappeared into the sky.

Kian drew a black curved sword from the Wraith at his chest and kicked off the ground, leaping forward.

He saw the body of the blonde girl, battered and torn, falling from the Thorn Demon.

He ran across the grassland, chasing the falling Erynys.

Erynys noticed him and raised her right hand, summoning a vine of thorns.

He slashed it away in one blow, accelerating toward her.

Her golden hair danced in the air.

With the impact of the collision, the body of the flesh doll was crushed.

He caught up to Erynys, who bounced slightly and then became still, pointing the black curved sword at the dying girl.

”…Kill me…” she murmured, voice faint in the pool of blood.

The vibration of the Demon’s body crashing to the ground was felt now, as if it had just arrived.

”Even if I kill you, Erynys’s soul will just escape from this world,” Kian said firmly.

 Erynys said nothing.

”You must atone for your sins. Therefore, I will not kill you.”

 ”…You naive fool.”

It wasn’t that he was naive.

Considering the irreparable damage caused by Erynys, the power of the magic sword was simply needed for the restoration of Izerland.

”Using the chains of ‘soul binding,’ you will be sealed in the territory of Count Cain,” Talia stated calmly.

Kian took out a dark spirit’s talisman from the Wraith and wrapped it around Erynys’s shattered neck. A large amount of blood stuck to his hands.

The chain that enslaves the target forever vanished as if being absorbed into the neck of the flesh doll.

With this, was the soul of ‘glasses’ bound?

”I curse you all… I will never forgive you…” Erynys hissed weakly.

”Do as you please,” Kian replied coldly.

”Cool your head over there, you single-celled idiot,” Talia snapped sharply.

She activated the spell with a sharp insult.

A massive amount of magic power was consumed from Kian’s body.

Erynys’s body was enveloped in light and vanished without a trace.

”Sir Kian!” Linca called out, running toward him with a beautiful soprano voice.

Around them, the grotesque monsters spawned by the Thorn Demon disappeared one after another.

From the sky, black ash—presumably from the Demon—continued to fall.

”Sir Kian! Lord Renaud and Ms. Aliona—”

 ”Ms. Aliona?”

”Yes! While Ms. Sarah and I held the line, they came to help from somewhere, but like Lord Renaud, they were parasitized by the Thorn’s tendrils!”

”Where are the bodies of Ms. Aliona and Lord Renaud?”

”They’re both enclosed by a barrier in the forest. Their bodies didn’t vanish even after death.”

Kian sheathed his black curved sword and grabbed Linca’s shoulder.

”Open the gate immediately. I want to fly to the top of Snowveil Pass, the Giant’s peak.”
