Volume 3 Chapter 50 Quest: Warrior Monk Performance II
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”We have various weapons available, but due to the rules of the governing organization for the gladiatorial matches, excessive magic weapons cannot be used. ‘Excessive’ means those with powerful effects that guarantee victory, like the Windsong Blade or the Sun Magic Sword. It’s fine to carve spells like ‘Acceleration’ or ‘Impact Strike’ onto weapons, though.”
As the carriage started moving, Guy began explaining in detail from across the seat.
The carriage only had Kian and Guy inside, but their large bodies and the beautifully decorated weapons piled up made the space feel quite cramped.
It was a good thing Lady Fhana didn’t join them in this carriage.
Kian politely declined and picked up a golden broadsword that was close by.
”A single-edged curved sword──this is a falchion, isn’t it? It’s about 37.4 inches (95 centimeters) long, with a 31.5 inch (80-centimeter) blade, and the thickness is just under 0.12 inches (3 millimeters) at its thickest part.”
Kian squinted and examined the slender, curved blade he drew from its sheath.
”The center of gravity is 9 millimeters (0.35 inches) from the guard. It’s beautiful… Its weight is about one kilogram (2.2 pounds), right?”
”Wow… You figured that out just by touching it lightly?”
Guy’s black eyes widened as he leaned forward.
Kian nodded as he returned the blade to its sheath.
”This road is quite long. However, this falchion is different from the common ones used among civilians. Usually, they resemble butcher knives with a thicker blade and a bulging tip that helps with cutting due to its weight. This one… has a shape similar to a sword from the country of Shin.”
”That’s right. That is the Soap Falchion. You see the dragon emblem carved on the handle? It was made during the time my ancestors fought the Azraelian pirates. It is different from the usual Conyard Falchion. The Conyard Falchion is the common type you mentioned, used by the Knight Conyard to kill a deadly monster centuries ago. It is designed more for fighting monsters than people, with a blade like a meat cleaver, perfect for slicing through monster tentacles or tails. Here is the Conyard Falchion.”
”Can I hold it?”
”Of course.”
”Thank you. This is amazing. It weighs about twice as much as the Soap Falchion. A swordsman from the West would gain beast-like strength with it, making it a powerful weapon. The handle is decorated with eagle wings and 3 lions. It’s very detailed. It has a splendor that goes beyond just a commoner’s weapon. Wonderful!”
”Hahaha, I see, I see. You understand, don’t you?”
Guy grinned, his mouth curling up as he let out a satisfied chuckle.
Kian returned the thick-bladed falchion to Guy and asked.
”Could it be that all of these are made by Sir Guy?”
”Oh, can you tell? Haha, you figured it out. Well, around here, I’m the only one besides the old man who can forge weapons like these.”
”Amazing. The best blacksmith in Izerland Fortress was good, but they had a limited variety of weapons. Just looking at this cart, you have a wide range from long swords to brock daggers, bucklers, and throwing knives.”
”In addition, we have various spears and large shields ready in front of the underground arena. We have spears that are shaped like pole axes, regular spears, and halberds. The halberds are specially designed for different uses, like taking an enemy’s weapon or sweeping their knees. I thought you would use a sword since you are a warrior monk, but if you want to use a spear and shield, just let me know. Some participants today will definitely use spears, so it is okay to counter a spear with a spear. You can change your weapons anytime during or after a match, so if you face a spear user, equipping a 2-handed sword or a shield that can break spears is a good idea. For example, there’s no need to challenge them with a small dagger.”
Kian listened carefully to Guy’s long speech, nodding along at various points.
When he asked more about the weapons in the vehicle, Guy’s mood improved even more, and he explained everything in detail.
(It’s fun to listen.)
’If it’s Lady Fhana, she might find it boring enough to yawn!’
With a smile still on his face, Kian watched as Guy lifted the lid of a box and pulled out something like a gauntlet.
”This is the Lantern Shield. It’s a modified buckler made of steel. You wear it on your left forearm. See? When you put it on, spikes stick out from around your fist. There’s also a serrated spike in the center of the shield, and you can press it to hurt your opponent. Inside, there’s a place for a lantern, so it works great for nighttime patrols. The lantern has a viewing window, and if there’s an enemy attack, you can easily blow it out. In one-on-one fights, you can even add poison to the spikes, making it a very useful offensive and defensive tool. I’m really proud of this one.”
”Amazing! Oh, if I pull this lever…”
”Right, the spikes pop out. This is the viewing window. If you want the lantern light, use this mechanism here.”
”I see. But won’t the shield get hot from the lantern’s heat? Or is heat magic standard gear for the knights of Châtillon?”
”That’s not how it works. The heat comes from here. It’s an air window. When I wear it, I can put insulation on top to reduce the impact, so it doesn’t get too hot. After an hour of use, I just sweat a little. In winter, it’s pretty warm.”
Guy finished speaking and took off the lantern shield from his arm.
At that moment, Kian noticed a long, burn-like scar running along Guy’s left forearm.
”Oh, is this it?”
Guy raised his arm casually, as if he noticed Kian’s gaze.
”Is it an old scar?”
”Yes. I can’t remember exactly when it happened… but I know for sure that Fhana hadn’t come yet, and Priscilla was still in the capital studying. Wait, no. I graduated 3 years later, so Priscilla was 15 at the time. That means it was about ten years ago. Yes, ten years ago, there was a complete fool trying to dry up the port of Châtillon.”
”W-wait, dry up the port…?”
”Yes… I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s true. When I got the report and went to the scene, the water level in the port was less than a tenth of what it should be. All the boats were sitting on the seabed, fish were floating in puddles, and fishermen were throwing their nets. The casino islands were filled with a strong smell of seaweed, and they needed to deodorize the buildings.”
”I think they must be a really skilled magician, but they seems to lack a sense of ethics.”
”Not just a little. That woman was crazy. She said something like, ‘I’m just making rain clouds because we need rain at the border’… I wanted to roast her, but instead, she burned off my tail and forearm with lightning. In my anger, I crushed her, but that was a mistake. She managed to escape by regenerating from the meat. I still regret not turning her to ash with my breath. Later, I asked the Adventurer Guild and the Western Church in Izerland if they knew anything about that fool, but both said they had no idea. Because of that, our country suffered a huge financial blow that year. Now, it’s remembered as the ‘Great Drought of Châtillon’.”
”Wow…”
Guy twisted his lips into a sneer, revealing unnatural ca9 teeth.
”That crazy elf woman from back then is still on the wanted list. Lord Kian, if you have any idea who it might be, please let me know. I don’t care about old wounds, but I want her to repay the damages from that year through hard work. If she’s a long-lived elf magician, she could greatly contribute to our country’s development.”
”Did you see her face?”
”No, I turned her into meat before I could see. But she must look ugly and withered like an old tree, just like old elves do.”
”I see. By the way, why do you think she’s an ‘old hag’?”
”The magic she used was so outdated. Plus, her perfume was from an old trend in the royal capital──it was that awful, out-of-date stuff. There’s no doubt she’s an old hag. A damn old hag. No doubt about it. That damn old hag.”
”Got it. If I find someone like that, I’ll let you know right away.”
”Yes, please do. She’s extremely dangerous. There’s no way she should be roaming in the wild.”
Guy claimed this with a serious expression.
Kian had unwittingly put on a serious face as well.
Just who the hell is that…?
Not having any clue, he swore to stay silent to prevent a giant war from starting.
* * *
Once they arrived in front of the underground arena, they slipped into the tent set up by Guy’s subordinates to avoid the eyes of the upper class loitering at the entrance.
Fhana seemed genuinely offended and didn’t come inside the tent.
The armor Guy was lending him looked like black light armor, similar to that worn by Azrael’s warrior monks.
The feet were clad in durable boots made of Griffin leather.
They provided protection up to just above the calves, so they seemed capable of deflecting some slashes.
Overall, it had a sleeker silhouette than the previous ‘Nightshade’ series.
There wasn’t much elegance, but if he needed something to show off his status as an Adventurer, it could work as casual wear.
If Kian could borrow the strange masks from Natra or Rufna, he might just be able to dress up as a Tengu or a Kitsune.
His weapon was a mithril soap falchion.
A curved sword.
It’s a beautiful, slashing weapon, also known as a scimitar with its graceful, bent blade.
For the gladiator match, he would hang the falchion from his waist, wearing his mock warrior monk gear.
As Guy directed things outside, Kian checked the borrowed gear inside the tent when suddenly the entrance opened, and a witch in a black dress stepped in.
”Hey. Aren’t you wearing that indecent outfit from the party last night?”
”Oh, Priscilla.”
”Ms. Priscilla…”
”Good evening.”
The white-haired witch smiled gracefully.
She wore her usual witch dress and had light makeup on.
She looked different since their last meeting with Demete and Abbas.
Her eyes were not too made-up, but her lips shone with a soft pink gloss.
At first glance, her shiny lips caught everyone’s attention with that makeup.
The white-haired witch smiled as always, but Kian felt his face and body stiffen a bit.
After all, this woman almost made him steal Guy’s wife.
Who knew what she was whispering to Fhana with that smile?
(The cost of that bl**job was way too high.)
”What? Are you wary of me?”
”Not really…”
”Then are you nervous? Even Lord Kian seems scared of a fight.”
”──This man fears no battle. He trusts my skills and believes victory is certain.”
”So, brother understands because he’s a warrior too?”
Priscilla no longer spoke to Guy with formal language.
It seemed like there was no one else to impress inside the tent.
