Volume 3 Chapter 59 Before Leaving Châtillon I

She waved her hand small and walked away.
Priscilla was tall for a woman, but Sarah was just as tall as her.
Kian squinted his eyes, watching the two graceful figures leave like poplar trees.
”…Elder Sister is hiding something, isn’t she?”
”Did you hear that?”
”Yes, I’m sorry.”
”No, it’s fine. I was going to ask you anyway.”
As Sarah turned her back, Kian’s smile faded a bit.
He quickly started to walk up the slope without turning to Natra and Rufna, who stood like shadows behind him.
”Do you know what exactly she is hiding?”
”No, I don’t. What about Rufna?”
”It’s about Oswald, obviously.”
The beautiful dark elf let out a breath, “Phew,” in the pouring summer sunlight and sea breeze, then continued.
”We were narrowing it down to either Master or Oswald as the Death Sword User. If Master is not, then it’s highly likely that Oswald is the Death Sword User. Even now that the Nakash family has fallen, if she’s still trying to follow the late Shajar’s orders, that girl is really doomed.”
”Sarah has always been serious. She has lived for the Nakash family, so it’s no surprise she feels lost now that the family is gone. I won’t let her meet Oswald.”
”Yeah. It’s been half a day since Elder Sister regained her sense of self. Her memories are starting to clear up, and she should have some space to think. We need to make sure she doesn’t sneak out of bed at night after we arrive in Izerland.”
”Right. If she goes to assassinate Oswald, it would be a disaster. It would be terrible if we helped Sarah only for her to turn to dust.”
”You don’t think Lady Sarah will win, huh? Well, against Oswald, who has the power of purification, we are at a huge disadvantage.”
”Since I chose to let Oswald live, we will have to fight in the sun someday. Public opinion won’t accept him staying in prison forever. For the upcoming battle, we need to sharpen our teeth.”
Natra nodded at his words.
Kian looked up at the tall, white lighthouse-like tower of Châtillon’s office building.
”And to do that, we can’t slack off in gathering powerful weapons.”
* * *
Guy was still holed up in his workshop making weapons.
The grim knight who responded was an odd one, with seaweed-like hair slicked back with oil.
Knight ── Lord Blumer ── promptly stood up from his sleek, dark high-grade bar wood desk as soon as Kian and the others entered the office.
Passing by a bookshelf lined with countless case files, he approached Kian.
He placed his gloved hands over his chest and bowed politely.
”Ah, Lord Kian. The ‘Night Crier’ quest is complete. Good work. On behalf of the acting lord, I thank you. Would you like some tea? I can prepare it for you.”
”No, thank you. I don’t want to trouble you more than necessary when you’re busy.”
”Hmm, if you understand that, I’d appreciate if you could report quickly. Well, Lady Priscilla will hear everything again, so in the end, I might not even need to listen to your stories.”
Blumer’s words annoyed him a bit, but if he kept getting irritated, the progress wouldn’t move forward.
Kian briefly reported that Jibril had intruded during the quest, using the ‘Parasol of the Night Queen’ and ‘Holy Sword of the Sun’.
The gloomy knight, initially rubbing his tired eyes and listening, gradually became more focused and stared intently at Kian’s words.
When Kian finished, he leaned forward and opened his mouth.
”Is that true? Lord Jibril really used the ‘Holy Sword of the Sun’?”
”Yes. Ms. Priscilla has already contacted Izerland and confirmed Oswald’s safety. She will talk more later, but she plans to visit Izerland soon to see how Oswald is doing.”
”That’s a good idea. If they really used the sun’s magic sword, it might have turned some old fortresses and their soldiers to ashes. We need to quickly gather funds for rebuilding important bases and reorganizing magical troops. Our relationship with Vahid’s territory will also change a lot.”
Blumer picked up a bell from his desk and shook it 3 times.
It seemed he called for the guard outside.
He grabbed a quill and prepared new paper while looking at Kian.
”Thank you for your report. Please collect your reward at the Adventurer Guild window. I have already arranged for the exact amount to reach you after fees.”
”Thank you very much.”
”You may go now. I’m busy. ──Ah, right, the sword the acting lord is making should be ready in about 3 or 4 days. It was already possible to start the weapon-making process.”
”Got it. So, I should visit Sir Guy’s workshop around then.”
”Yes. ──Uh, what’s wrong?”
Blumer’s last words were for the bureaucrat who burst into the office, having just opened the door.
The bureaucrat, gliding past Rufna, turned his sweaty face towards Blumer.
”The merchants of the Tigris mine have returned!”
”…I heard the old men went to Dacia to mine mithril?”
”That’s right.”
The bureaucrat wiped his neck with a cloth and continued.
”They seem to have been attacked by a mercenary on the way. After crossing the checkpoint, they had their carts, food, weapons, armor, and even their clothes taken!”
”And? Are the old men──Mr. Halam and the others──safe?”
”Now, at the main castle’s drawbridge, there’s a commotion. The introduced mercenary was a bandit, they say. They’re demanding compensation for the stolen supplies.”
”Ugh, what a hassle… Alright, I’m on my way. Prepare a carriage and some change of clothes, please. The slaves can do without, but for the Halam family, make sure it’s something with a nice feel. We mustn’t provoke them any further.”
”Understood! I’ll get everything ready right away!”
”Please hurry. I’ll buy us some time by dealing with them. ────Lord Kian, I must take my leave now.”
”Yes, thank you for today.”
”……”
Blumer bowed silently and slipped past Kian, heading out of the office.
To avoid getting caught up in the commotion, Kian and the others decided to wait a while before leaving the office.
”I can’t believe they’re going to dig for mithril in Dacia…”
Rufna muttered with her hands behind her head, looking listless.
Natra shook her head in response.
”Even if they find a vein, it’s impossible for Princess Maribel to send an army for mining. The chairman of the merchant guild Tigris mine, Boco Halam, needs to find another partner. It’s unfortunate for him that Oswald, who was the perfect choice in terms of distance and military power, has fallen.”
”I don’t know Boco that well, and it’s not like we’re causing him trouble on purpose… but it’s tough.”
”If it’s Azrael’s will, our fates may cross paths again someday.”
”Well, Dacia is a promised reward for us, after all.”
As he listened to their voices, Kian was thinking about something else.
The matter of the merchant guild Tigris Mine was beyond his power now, and he wasn’t particularly interested.
(Come to think of it, are there any ancient equipment buried in Châtillon?)
’Indeed, there is. Hidden in a cave on the intricate northern coast outside Châtillon Fortress.’
(Well, before we leave here, we have to retrieve that. Why didn’t you say something sooner?)
Kian frowned, but ‘glasses’ casually responded.
’Because it wasn’t very important. The thing hidden there is armor. One set isn’t good for actual battle, and the other is suitable but makes you a bit bulky when worn.If you want it, go dig for it. Wearing this will easily break illusion spells too.’
(After that, it’ll be free time. Once you finish packing, we’ll set out to explore.)
’Understood, I got it.’
It’s also a good idea to find a small gift for Lady Fhana.
Maybe find a beautiful flower growing on the cliff, then resinize it and turn it into a paperweight or a feather pen holder.
It’s practical, and for her who usually doesn’t go into mountains, it’ll also be a nice sight.
Kian quietly took out ‘glasses’ from Guy’s warrior monk gear pocket without a sound──and
silently put them on behind Natra and Rufna, who continued chatting nearby.
