Chapter 214 Yamato Hina and the Demon King Medinilla ⑲

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

The Swallow Edge¹ bit into Yamato’s back.

Fortunately-or perhaps unluckily for Sieben-the armor and chainmail prevented the blade from sinking too deep.

”That man…! How can he stoop to such cowardly depths?” Ise hissed, her teeth grinding in rage.

To call such a move “cowardly” was a stretch. Sieben’s status was vastly inferior to Yamato’s; it was only natural for him to rely on strategy. He was currently using his ‘Natural Talent’ to trace and boost his skills, bridging the gap in raw parameters with pure technique. In fact, as “Sieben,” he now won three out of every ten matches against the Demon King. He had become that accustomed to the rhythm of slaughter.

On the other hand, Yamato Hina was undoubtedly strong. She had gained immense power since leaving Envyos, but she lacked the stomach for pain. Her movements faltered the moment she was struck. Sieben was far too ruthless to miss an opening like that.

He spread his right hand, sparks of magical fire igniting at each fingertip. According to Sieben-or rather, Natsumi-the technique was a reference to an enemy character from a popular manga.

 ”‘Finger (F) Flame (F) Burst (B)’!”

A thunderous roar drowned out the sounds of the arena. Five concentrated pillars of flame rained down on Yamato, her figure vanishing behind a curtain of black smoke.

This ‘Flame Burst’ sorcery was a high-tier evolution of the standard fireball, boasting far greater destructive power and range. Typically, only court sorcerers or elite monster hunters could manifest it. For a commoner, a single cast would drain their entire mana pool-if it didn’t backfire and kill them first. Even for Sieben, four or five shots were his limit.

”He got her!” Honoka cheered from the stands.

Wait. Isn’t that what they call a death flag?

As the smoke slowly drifted away, a figure emerged.

”What… incredible power. You certainly live up to the rumors,” Yamato said. She was covered in soot and dropped to one knee, but she was very much alive.

”No way… She tanked that?” Honoka’s eyes widened in shock. The rest of the audience seemed to share her disbelief; a wave of stunned murmurs rippled through the stadium.

In truth, it came down to the status gap and the quality of her gear. While she didn’t have innate fire resistance, armor crafted by Miss-ril² could mitigate a significant amount of magical damage. Even so, it clearly hadn’t been a painless hit.

”Impressive. I really thought that would end it,” Sieben said.

”Barely… To be honest, it hurts to even stand. But I’m not done yet.”

”I see. Then get up. If you can’t, then this really is-“

”That’s enough. I will not permit any further insolence!”

As Sieben prepared to hurl the Swallow Edge, a blade was suddenly pressed against his throat. Without anyone noticing, Ise had moved behind him.

* * *

I felt the cold steel of Ise’s knife biting into my neck. I glanced toward the spectator seats and saw her still sitting there. I see. A unique skill. A ‘Parting Body’ clone. A convenient trick, though that wasn’t the issue at hand.

”You dared to wound Milady’s face… and then you deceived her with a cowardly backstab. You truly are a despicable worm,” Ise spat.

”Cowardly, huh? Isn’t intruding on a one-on-one duel the definition of playing dirty?”

”I am protecting Milady. Do not compare your filth to my devotion.”

 Ise’s self-righteousness was exhausting.

”Don’t move. If you twitch, I’ll open your throat… just like this.” She pressed the knife harder, nicking the skin. It wasn’t like my main body would die-and I’d just resurrect anyway-but the sensation was far from pleasant.

 ”Maya! Stop!” Yamato shouted.

”Milady, I will hold this wretch down. Finish him now!”

”But… that’s not right…” Yamato hesitated. Even she seemed put off by the interference.

”Milady! A man this vile needs to be taught a lesson! Cowards can never win, no matter how they struggle! Now, strike him down!”

The irony was staggering. Yamato wavered, but eventually, she began to chant. It sounded like a high-level spell; the mana was taking a long time to stabilize.

I sighed. Ise was a lost cause, but I was disappointed in Yamato, too. The fact that she was willing to ignore the rules of a mock battle just to secure a win made the whole thing feel pathetic.

”Ise-san! That’s a foul! Yamato-san will be disqualified!” Carmilla the guildmaster shouted, trying to intervene, but Ise ignored her.

”Wait, Carmilla-san,” I called out. “Let it continue. On a real battlefield, you’re always outnumbered. Calling ‘foul’ is just a loser’s excuse. I don’t mind.”

”…If Sieben-kun is okay with it, the match continues. But are you sure?”

 ”Absolutely.”

Carmilla sighed. This was a mess, but if I couldn’t handle an ambush like this, I had no business seeking vengeance.

”Fine. Yamato-san, Ise-san… see me in my office after this.”

I doubted Ise would listen to a lecture.

”For a cheat, you’re surprisingly graceful in defeat,” Ise mocked.

”It’s just not worth getting worked up over. But Ise, I have two pieces of advice for you. First: never hesitate. If you had just slit my throat, you would have won, regardless of the verdict.”

”I wanted Milady to have the glory. It would be disrespectful for me to take the kill.”

Her logic was insane. But then again, she lived for Yamato.

”I’ll keep that in mind. And the second?”

”Don’t underestimate me. And watch your step.”

 ”What are you-GURK!”

Ise made a sound no girl should ever make.

A jagged spire of stone erupted from the ground, skewering her through the lower body and up through her torso. The tip of the ‘Rock Grave’³ burst through her mouth in a spray of gore. She leaked fluid as her limbs went into final, violent spasms. Instant death.

Fragile. Even for a clone, a Hero’s subordinate shouldn’t have died to a single mid-tier spell.

”Silent… Casting? In one hit?” The “real” Ise in the stands gasped, her face pale.

It seemed the clone didn’t inherit her full stats. Still, ‘Rock Grave’ was a lethal earth-element spell. It was easy to dodge if seen coming, but it was perfect for an ambush. She was the one who assumed I was weak because I played dirty. She forgot that I could cast earth and lightning spells without a single word.

Yamato was shaken by Ise’s death, but her spell was finally ready.

 ”Take this! Dragon Flare!”

A massive torrent of fire shaped like a dragon surged toward me, jaws wide enough to swallow me whole. It was likely a modified version of ‘Prominence Flare.’ It moved with a predator’s instinct, but…

 ”Dispel.”

With a single word, the dragon vanished into thin air.

Yamato stood frozen. She couldn’t comprehend how her ultimate attack had been deleted. I didn’t give her time to think. I hurled the Swallow Edge. She snapped out of it just in time to parry the spinning blade with her sword. That was fine. It was just a distraction.

 ”What?! When did-?!”

As her sword was occupied, I lashed out with the whip-sword hidden at my waist. The segmented blade snaked around her sword arm, binding it tight. She was wearing Miss-ril gauntlets, so it didn’t cut her, but damage wasn’t the goal.

I yanked the wire, dragging Yamato toward me. Under normal circumstances, she would have won a contest of strength, but she was panicked and off-balance.

 ”Kyaa!”

She let out a high-pitched, girlish yelp as she was yanked off her feet. As she flew toward me, I caught her and slammed her into the dirt with a vacuum throw. Neither the crowd nor Yamato seemed to understand how I’d flipped her.

I immediately dropped my weight onto her, pinning her shoulders to the ground with my knees. Full mount.

To the onlookers, the sight of a man pinning a girl like this probably looked lewd, but I wasn’t exactly thinking about “nighttime combat” right now. I do this to Lil and Honoka all the time during training anyway.

With my full weight on her, she couldn’t even struggle. In a mock battle, this was checkmate. Yamato went limp, the fight draining out of her.

”I give up,” she whispered. “I surrender.”

 Summary:

Sieben (Natsumi) wins his mock battle against the Hero Yamato Hina despite illegal interference from Hina’s subordinate, Ise. After brutally executing Ise’s clone with a surprise earth spell, Sieben dispels Hina’s ultimate fire attack and forces her into a physical submission. The chapter concludes with Hina’s formal surrender in the arena.

 —

 Trivia:

 - Sieben is using a ‘Natural Talent’ trace skill to compete with Hina’s superior stats.

 - Ise’s presence behind Sieben was a ‘Parting Body’ clone, while her real body remained in the stands.

 - Sieben intentionally allowed the 2-on-1 fight to continue to test his own limits for future vengeance.

 - The ‘Finger Flame Burst’ is a specific pop-culture reference to shonen manga.

 - Sieben’s ‘vacuum throw’ is a reference to classic fighting game mechanics.

 - The Miss-ril armor Hina wears was specifically made by Lil, a character close to the protagonist

 —

 Character Insight:

Sieben demonstrates a cold, pragmatic approach to combat, showing no hesitation in killing Ise’s clone despite her gender or the public setting. Hina shows a lack of mental fortitude when faced with pain or rule-breaking, contrasting with her high physical stats.

 —

 Behind the Scenes:

The author notes that Ise (Maya) is intended to be a more problematic character than Hina, specifically comparing her to ‘toxic feminist’ archetypes. The chapter also clarifies the protagonist’s current weapon loadout.

 TL Notes:

1 Swallow Edge: An African-style throwing knife made of Tungsten-Mithril alloy that returns like a boomerang.

2 Miss-ril: A pun on Mithril, referencing the character Lil who crafted the gear.

3 Rock Grave: A lethal earth-attribute spell that summons stone spikes from the ground.

4 Whip-sword: Formally named ‘Sidewinder,’ a segmented blade improved for durability and elasticity.
