Chapter 235 Yamato Hina and the Demon King Medinilla ㉞
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Lord Sieben… no, Sasaki and Narumi were ice statues. Cracks spider-webbed across their bodies before they shattered into a thousand glittering shards. I was stunned to learn Sieben’s true identity was Sasaki, but the horror of it was sharper: I had let Sasaki die before my eyes again. And this time, I had lost Narumi, too. The weight of regret was suffocating.
Yet, those who had come with Sasaki—Himuro, Himezaki, and even Mihiro—showped no sign of despair. They simply stood there, eyes locked on Medinilla, the woman who had just slaughtered their friends.
”Himuro! Himezaki! Sasaki is dead!” I screamed. “How can you just stand there?!”
”It’s not like that,” Himuro said. “But he… Natsumi will be fine. Honestly, Honoka-san dying is the bigger headache. Though, I guess that’s just so like her.”
A cold sense of wrongness washed over me. Did they just call Sasaki “Natsumi”?
”Still… watching someone die right in front of you is a lot to take,” Mihiro mused. “Is this what Honoka-san was going through all that time?”
”I was there back then too, but man, everything was just so messed up,” Himezaki muttered.
”He’s Sieben… and because he’s Sieben, it’s fine,” Himuro added. “He’ll just pop back up eventually. The real problem is her.” Himuro glared at Medinilla.
”I don’t get the feeling she has any intention of letting us walk out of here,” Himuro said.
”Agreed,” Mihiro replied. “But we don’t exactly have a winning play here, do we?” Himezaki asked.
All three remained remarkably composed. And then there was me. I was just panicking, trembling—utterly pathetic.
”Mihiro-san, there’s really no problem regarding Sasaki-kun, right?” Kagaya asked, her voice tight.
”Yeah, exactly. Like Yukiko-san said, he’ll be back before long,” Mihiro replied.
”I see. Then until he does, we have to stay alive. That’s our only victory condition,” Kagaya said.
”True… though not knowing when he’s coming back is the tricky part,” Mihiro replied, never taking their eyes off the demon king.
What was wrong with these people? Did they actually think Sasaki could be resurrected? He had just been pulverized! But while my mind reeled, Kagaya and Mihiro kept planning as if death was a mere inconvenience.
”If that’s the case, everything hinges on Himuro-san,” Kagaya noted. “I can’t even begin to block that woman’s attacks.”
”Fair point. Yukiko-san, can you keep ‘Aegis’ active?” Mihiro asked.
”I keep it up twenty-four-seven anyway, so that’s fine,” Yukiko replied. “I just need to keep it expanded to cover everyone.”
”Ugh, this is so frustrating,” Mihiro groaned. “If it wasn’t for that instant-death spam, we could actually do something. Talk about a total cheat.”
”We’re all cheats, though,” Himezaki muttered. “Though Natsumi is in a league of his own.”
Maya interrupted, her voice flat and professional. “Milady, let us focus solely on survival for now. We can worry about the details later.”
Maya was right. If we died here, none of it mattered. I refused to just sit here and wait for the end.
”Everyone, get behind me!” I commanded. I stepped forward as the others retreated.
”Ho? It seems you’re the strongest of this lot. Not that it changes the outcome,” Medinilla said.
Medinilla unleashed the same freezing sorcery that had claimed Sasaki and Narumi. A tidal wave of jagged ice roared toward us.
”Nu?”
The ice slammed into Himuro’s ‘Aegis’ and reflected, surging back toward Medinilla.
”I see. A reflection-type Skill. How tedious. However, I am not so foolish as to be slain by my own hand,” Medinilla said.
The reflected icicles stopped dead and shattered. She had negated them with the exact same technique.
”…’Aegis’ is frozen,” Himuro whispered. The invisible barrier had turned a solid, opaque white.
”I want to reset it, but I can’t,” Himuro gritted her teeth. “If it gets broken, I can’t redeploy it for a full day. Once it’s shattered, we’re done.”
”Oh, come on! Why do the Goddess’s Unique Skills always have some stupid catch?!” Mihiro complained.
”Kukakakaka! heh… heh… heh! Curse the Goddess who gave you such flawed toys, then! This is the end. You can take your complaints to her in the afterlife noja!” Medinilla cackled.
A second wave of instant-death ice roared toward us.
”MEGIDDO!” I roared.
”What?! What is this?!” Medinilla’s laughter turned to a scream of pure shock. The entire wave of ice had been incinerated instantly.
My Unique Skill was ‘Michael’s Grace.’ It granted me the ultimate miracle: the divine magecraft, ‘Megiddo.’ It was the fire of God that purified all creation. But the cost was a staggering drain on my MP and a heat so intense it felt like my blood was boiling.
”Ha… ah… guuuuuugh!” It burned. It felt like my flesh was being cooked from the inside out.
”What a nasty little trick,” Medinilla hissed. “But from the look of you… you can’t fire that twice, can you?”
”Ku… guh… the flames of Megiddo do not flicker or fail so easily! No matter how much ice you throw, I’ll burn it all to ash!” I screamed. My vision was blurring. I had to stay up. For Sasaki. For Narumi.
”Such pathetic willpower. Let’s see how long it lasts. My ‘Ice of Sloth’ has no such limits. I can do this all day,” Medinilla smirked.
”Until you’re dead, demon king! We’re the ones who win!”
”Don’t get cocky, you little brat!” Medinilla growled.
”Eh? Gfuh-?!”
In the space of a heartbeat, Medinilla was inside my guard. A massive impact slammed into my stomach. I didn’t even see the movement.
”Ugu… geho… eguu…” My knees gave out. I collapsed, retching as bile burned my throat.
”You thought you won because you countered my ‘Ice of Sloth’?! Know your place!” Medinilla screamed.
”Gaha!” A boot slammed onto the side of my head, grinding my face into the stone.
”Milady! Get your filthy foot off her, you—gafu?!” Maya charged, but Medinilla swiped at her, sending her flying. In an instant, everyone else—Mihiro, Himuro, Himezaki, and Kagaya—were sprawled on the floor, incapacitated.
”You humans always label us Mazoku as ‘evil,’ but you’re the ones who slaughter the innocent for sport. You are the true monsters,” Medinilla said.
”Don’t screw with me!” I wheezed. “You Mazoku are evil just for existing! You’re just an invading monster!”
”The ones who started this invasion were you humans! The arrogance is staggering!” Medinilla ground her heel into my temple.
”That man, Sieben… he was at least decent. But you? You claim the Goddess is untrustworthy, yet here you are, acting as her little lapdog. You’re a pathetic fool.”
She ground her boot down with demonic hatred. I felt a bone-chilling terror. Drip, drip, drip… A warm sensation spread across my crotch, dampening my clothes. I couldn’t hold it. I didn’t even have the capacity to be embarrassed. My mind was consumed by the primal fear of death. It was just like back then, with the giant wolf.
”Setting this one and her maid aside, the rest of you are just victims of circumstance. Unlucky. Accept your end,” Medinilla said.
The air grew even colder. My consciousness began to drift. *I don’t want to die. Please…*
”I’m sorry, but I can’t let you kill them. Mihiro-san, Yukiko-san, Reese-san, and Mashiro-san are precious to Master. And as for Hina-san and Maya-san… well, what happens to them is for Master to decide.”
A voice. Narumi’s voice. *Am I dead? Is this the afterlife?*
I felt a gentle, warm breeze.
”What is this?! Why are you still alive?! Answer me!” Medinilla screamed.
”I don’t really know. But I bet Master does ssu.”
”Master? I don’t see your ‘Master’ anywhere! And what is with that look? You think you’re an angel?!”
I forced my eyes open. There stood Narumi. Great, pure-white wings sprouted from her back. She was still wearing that lewd maid outfit.
”Sorry. That took a little longer than I thought.”
”It’s okay. I only just got down here myself ssu.”
Sasaki appeared as if dancing down from the heavens, returning to the world of the living.
