Chapter 90 Interlude꞉ The Experiment
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
I wasn’t exactly sitting on my hands while I had Reika-san and Satsuki-chan locked away in the basement.
Between my responsibilities at the Casino Guild, taking on contracts as a Monster Hunter, and attending dinners with various VIPs to expand my network, my schedule was packed. Not to mention, I had to put in some “quality time” with my Clan members to deepen our… bonds.
Well, except for Himezaki-san, those “bonds” were mostly physical.
Anyway, there was something else on my to-do list. When I used Snatch¹ on Satsuki-chan’s unique skill, it unlocked a brand-new ability: [Synthesis Summoning]². It falls under the Pride³ category. Basically, it’s the same fusion mechanic you’d find in a certain legendary RPG series. I assume it’s under “Pride” because creating new life by mashing monsters together is a “Domain of God” kind of sin. Regardless, it was time for some science.
”S-So, that’s why you c-c-came to see me, huh?” Yokoo-kun stammered.
”Yeah. When it comes to summoning, you’ve got the most experience,” I said.
”Indeed,” Tatei-san added, nodding solemnly. “Among our circle, Yokoo-dono is the only true master of the summoning arts.”
I nodded back. I was currently over at the Odd Jobs Dekoboko⁴ shop. Since neither Yokoo-kun nor Tatei-san are exactly “people persons,” they usually hide in the back, meaning the shop isn’t exactly bustling. The downside is that Alice-chan, their poster girl, has to pick up all the slack.
Since it was break time, Alice-chan was hanging out with us. Watching the distance between her and Tatei-san… man, the “predatory vibes” were off the charts. But since they’re actually into each other, I guess love really is a mystery.
”So, give it to me straight. I need to know the basics of summoning,” I said.
”G-Got it. Since it’s a request from my b-best friend, I’ll tell you everything,” Yokoo-kun replied.
According to Yokoo-kun, summoning falls into three main categories:
1. Familiar Summoning: You summon a monster from this world and press-gang it into service. You sign a master-servant contract, so they’re your constant shadows. Most Monster Hunters with pets use this. My Materialization Summoning and Satsuki-chan’s Sacrifice Summoning⁵ are in this ballpark.
2. Spirit Summoning: This is calling upon spirits of the eight elements. Unlike familiars, they don’t just hang around; you have to call them every time. Spirits are high-tier entities and possess Great Strength. Contracts are brutal-usually requiring massive mana, or weird conditions like ‘Become my lover.’ My Earth Spirit King⁶ skills and Honoka-chan’s Protection of Raphael⁷ summon belong here.
3. Possession Summoning⁸: Similar to spirits, but you “wear” the summon. You or a target become a vessel for the entity’s power. You get full access to their strength, but it’s risky. It’s not uncommon for the summon to hijack the host’s body. I have Earth Spirit King and Raphael versions of this, though I can’t use them yet.
With the basics out of the way, it was time to test my Sacrifice Summoning. The mechanic is simple: you offer a monster to summon one a rank higher. It even works with corpses. I wanted to quip that it should be called “Post-Mortem Summoning,” but I held it in.
I pulled a cage out and dragged out my first test subject: a Horn Rabbit. It used to be Satsuki-chan’s pet. The thing looks cute, but it’s a total menace. It had torn up my garden and eaten enough expensive flowers to cause legitimate financial damage. I’d complained to Satsuki-chan about her lack of pet discipline, but she just brushed me off. “Poor thing, I can’t keep it tied up!” she’d say. Of course, Satsuki-chan eventually ended up as “livestock” herself, so… karma.
”You’re using that little guy?” Yokoo-kun asked, his breathing getting heavy. “I-I gotta admit… I’m kinda excited to see what pops out.”
I felt the same. Time to sacrifice the bunny. A magic circle erupted beneath the Horn Rabbit’s paws. Pillars of light shot up, forming a cage. The rabbit panicked, thumping against the barrier, but there was no escape. It was swallowed by the radiance, and when the light dimmed…
”…An Almiraj?” I muttered.
”L-Lame,” Yokoo-kun slumped.
”It’s not even cute!” Alice-chan pouted.
The Almiraj stood there with a horn twice as long as the rabbit’s and mean, slanted eyes. The cuteness was gone. Everyone’s shoulders dropped. But the real value of Sacrifice Summoning is the chain. I fed the Almiraj back into the circle. The light flashed again.
”””It’s huge!””” we all shouted.
The new rabbit was nearly as tall as Alice-chan. A Big Rabbit. They’re known for being docile and completely useless in a fight. By the way, they’re actually raised as livestock for meat. Cute, but a tragic existence.
”Well, this is… something,” I said.
”I wanna fluff it! Dibs!” Alice-chan shouted. She dived into the Big Rabbit’s fur. The rabbit didn’t even flinch; it just let her squeeze it like a giant pillow.
”So soft… fluff-fluff… fluff-fluff…” Alice-chan whispered.
She was obsessed. But no matter how soft it was, it was useless to me.
”Okay, you’ve had your fun. Let go,” I said.
”Nooo! I want more fluff! I’ll take care of it! I’ll be responsible!” Alice-chan cried.
”That’s not how this works…” I replied.
Alice-chan had a total blind spot for anything cute. Tatei-san finally stepped in. “Alice, I’ll take you to a ranch later and we’ll buy one together, okay? People keep them as pets all the time.”
”Really?! Promise? Ehehe~ I love you the most, Ko-chan!” Alice-chan cheered, lunging at Tatei-san.
He looked like he’d won the lottery. I’m one to talk, but seriously… Just drop dead, you two.
Anyway, I sacrificed the Big Rabbit. Alice-chan actually started tearing up, making the guilt feel very real. The new summon didn’t look much different from a regular rabbit, though its front teeth were suspiciously long. I used Appraisal⁹.
”…Gyaaaaaaaaaaaaa!” I screamed.
”W-What? What happened, Sieben-shi?!” Yokoo-kun yelled.
”Use Appraisal! Now! Something cursed just spawned!” I shouted back.
”Hmm. It looks like a normal-Hieee!” Tatei-san shrieked.
”Ugyaaaa! It’s a nightmare!” Yokoo-kun wailed.
”What?” Alice-chan asked, tilting her head. “What’s the big deal? It’s just a bunny.”
”T-That thing… that’s a Vorpal Bunny!” Tatei-san stammered.
Alice-chan pulled her hand back as if the air itself was poisonous.
The Vorpal Bunny. Despite the adorable exterior, it’s a cold-blooded killer that aims exclusively for the neck. Our fear came from a certain 3D RPG where this thing had sent my party to the “Game Over” screen more times than I could count.
”…It’s strong, but what do we do?” I asked.
”””Next!””” they all shouted in unison.
I sacrificed the killer bunny immediately. The result was a plain white rabbit, only slightly larger than a house pet. But its stats were a different story.

Her stats were insane for Level 1. Especially that MAG. And the [Spatial Jump] was the real kicker. I stopped the Sacrifice chain there and moved to the next step.
[Synthesis Summoning] has two modes: Normal and Enhancement Synthesis¹³.
I started with Enhancement Synthesis. I pulled out the corpse of Nigotori Maki. Tatei-san and Yokoo-kun made disgusted faces. Alice-chan looked at the body like it was a piece of trash. “So this is the guy who messed with Ko-chan? Hmph. Pathetic.”
”I know we hated the guy,” Tatei-san muttered, “but this is a bit grim…”
”Really?” Alice-chan chirped. “I kind of want to tear her into eight pieces. Hey, can I mess her up a bit more first?”
”I think it would be fine, but let’s not,” I said.
”Alright, let’s get weird!” I shouted, initiating the Enhancement Synthesis. A magic circle enveloped the rabbit and Nigotori’s corpse. The body turned into a dark vapor and was sucked into the rabbit’s fur. The rabbit didn’t change at all physically, but its status was a different story.

Her stats had spiked across the board. It appeared she’d inherited roughly twenty percent of Nigotori’s base attributes, along with a few choice skills. She’d even picked up “Two-Handed Sword” – a skill Nigotori had mastered. Though, honestly, for a rabbit, a heavy claymore skill is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.
Still, for a Level 1, the little guy is an absolute unit.
But now, it’s time for the main event: Normal Synthesis. I’m using the Space-Time Rabbit ¹⁴ as the base again, but this time, Torimaki’s corpse is going into the blender as the material.
”Man, this is getting more and more like MegaTen ¹⁵, isn’t it?” Yokoo remarked.
”Tell me about it,” I replied. “Well, let’s see what kind of monstrosity – or miracle – pops out…”
Just like before, a magic circle erupted from the floor, swirling around the lone rabbit and the body. I’m still not sure if it’s okay to count a corpse as a “person,” but I wasn’t about to overthink it now. The sigils began to pulse and flicker, and both forms began to dissolve, vaporizing into a shimmering mist that swirled together into a single point.
Then, a flash of blinding light hit us.
As the radiance slowly faded, standing in the center of the room was –
”Hwah…? Where… where am I?”
It was a girl. She had long, flowing white hair, large crimson eyes, and a pair of twitching rabbit ears sprouting from the top of her head.

”Wait… Wha – KYAAAAAAAH! Why am I NAKED!?”
She was stark naked.
The bunny-girl immediately dropped into a frantic crouch, trying to cover herself. Yeah, but from that angle, the parts you’re really trying to hide are basically on display for the world to see. I didn’t have the heart to tell her, though.
More importantly… that face. I recognized it.
”Hey, Tatei, Yokoo… does she look familiar to you guys?” I asked.
I turned toward the guys, only to see Alice standing on her tiptoes, firmly clamping her hands over Tatei’s eyes. “Don’t you dare look!” she scolded.
And as for Yokoo…
”Yo – Yokooooo!?” I shouted.
He was flat on his back, a literal geyser of blood erupting from his nose. There was already a small pond of red forming around his head.
”Are you okay, Yokoo!?” I asked, rushing over.
I tried to prop him up, but he just gave me a weak, blissful smile.
”I have… no regrets… in this life…” Yokoo wheezed nan-da-na.
He gave a shaky thumbs-up and promptly passed out, a look of pure enlightenment on his face.
”Alice! Get some clothes on her, fast!” I yelled. “If we don’t, Yokoo’s going to bleed out and die a very stupid death!”
”On it! Come here, sweetie, quickly!” Alice replied.
Alice hurriedly ushered the confused bunny-girl out of the room.
* * *
”Man… I saw the light. I almost went to the great beyond,” Yokoo groaned nan-da-na.
Those were his first words upon waking. He was still pale as a sheet from the massive blood loss. I’d already used Lifestyle Magic ¹⁶ to scrub the “blood pond” out of the floorboards.
”Dying from a nosebleed would’ve been an eternal stain on your family name, dude,” I said.
”My late grandma was on the other side of the river, waving me over… she looked so happy…” Yokoo muttered nan-da-na.
That was definitely the Sanzu River ¹⁷.
”Um…”
Before we could dive deeper into his near-death experience, Alice and the bunny-girl returned. Her hair was now tied into neat twin-tails, and she was wearing a spare apron dress of Alice’s. Since it fit her perfectly, I assumed the dress had some kind of auto-sizing enchantment.
Now that she was decent, I took another look at her face. It was definitely ringing a bell. Where had I seen her?
”Seriously, who is she?” I asked the guys again.
Tatei just tilted his head in confusion, but Yokoo’s eyes went wide.
”That’s Torimaki Sango… Torimaki Ichigo’s little sister,” Yokoo said nan-da-na.
Ah, that’s why. She looked just like Ichigo, though her features were softer. I wondered if the resemblance was only skin-deep.
”Hey… what’s your name?” I asked.
”Sango, Torimaki Sango desu,” she replied.
So it really was her.
”W-Wait! Is that… Ma-niichan?” Sango asked, looking at Yokoo.
””Ma-niichan?””
Tatei and I spoke in perfect, confused unison.
”Oh, uh, yeah. Sango used to call me ‘Ma-niichan’ back in the day,” Yokoo explained nan-da-na, looking sheepish.
”I see…”
I decided to leave that one alone.
According to Yokoo, Sango-san was actually the “normal” one of the family. Apparently, after Ichigo was bought out by Reika, the whole Torimaki clan turned into total jerks toward the Yokoo family – everyone except Sango, who always treated him with kindness.
Talk about a black sheep. Or, I guess, a white rabbit.
”Uuuugh, Ma-niichan saw me naked… I’m so embarrassed, I could just die…” Sango moaned.
She seemed genuinely traumatized by the accidental exposure. I was about to apologize, but then she continued:
”To think he saw me while I look so plain! If I at least had a curvaceous, hourglass figure, I wouldn’t have minded being seen so much!”
That’s what you’re worried about!?
”Uh, Yokoo literally almost died from the sheer impact of your ‘plain’ nakedness, so I think you’re doing just fine,” I offered, trying to be helpful in the weirdest way possible.
”Really? Well… if you say so…” Sango said desu, quieting down.
She’s okay with that? Really?
Anyway, I had questions. I wanted to know if our disappearance caused a massive stir back in our old world.
But Sango told us something chilling: there was no uproar at all. In fact, she said that everyone – including her – had completely forgotten about Yokoo and even her own sister. The memories only came flooding back the moment she arrived in this world.
I bet that “useless goddess” wiped everyone’s memories to keep things quiet.
Still, I never expected a synthesis to summon Torimaki’s sister. And with bunny ears, no less. She even had a little cotton-ball tail hidden under her skirt.
When I pointed it out, she jumped like she’d been electrocuted. “No way!? …Wh-what the heck is THIS!?” she screamed, sounding like an old-school drama actor.
She was just as shocked by her new white hair and red eyes. I’d initially thought she’d become an albino, but her skin was healthy and glowing.
I remembered that even a lowlife like Sugita wouldn’t touch that girl. One time, Sugita’s gang dragged her out into the sun, and she turned lobster-red instantly, looking like she’d been burned all over. After that, everyone stayed far away from her.
”By the way… who are you people? Are you Ma-niichan’s friends?” Sango asked.
”Ah, it seems I have been remiss in my manners,” Tatei said de-gozaru, stepping forward with a stiff bow. “I am Tatei Kozo. As you might have surmised, I am Yoko’s most trusted companion. And this young lady is Alice.”
”Nice to meet you, Sango-chan!” Alice chirped.
”Oh, uh, nice to meet you… wow, you’re like a living doll,” Sango said desu.
”In a sense, that is correct,” Tatei added de-gozaru. “She is not of humankind. She is a materialized summon brought forth by Yoko – his daughter, if you will.”
”Daughter!? Wait, Ma-niichan, you’re MARRIED!?” Sango cried.
”I’m not! I’m really not!” Yokoo yelled nan-da-na.
”Oh… oh, thank goodness,” Sango muttered. “Then… if I marry Ma-niichan, Alice-chan becomes my daughter… a junior high student with a kid… talk about a head start…”
Sango-chan started muttering something under her breath, but I decided it was best to pretend I didn’t hear it.
”And what about the shady guy in the mask?” Sango asked.
”Shady…”
I felt a physical arrow pierce my chest. She didn’t mean it maliciously, but still…
”Ah, he’s Sieben-san! He’s, uh, my best friend!” Yokoo blurted out nan-da-na.
”Is that so…? Ma-niichan, I really think you should be more selective with your friends,” Sango said desu.
Can I go cry in a corner now?
”Sieben’s a great guy! Honestly, it’s thanks to him that I even got to see you again,” Yokoo said nan-da-na.
”Really? Oh…” Sango said softy desu.
”So please, don’t judge him just by his… unique look,” Yokoo added nan-da-na.
”Okay. I’m sorry, Sieben-san,” Sango said desu with a sincere bow.
She was definitely more well-adjusted than her sister Ichigo.
”I appreciate the apology. Anyway, Sango-chan… there’s a bit of a catch. You’re technically registered as my ‘Familiar,’” I explained.
I took a moment to explain the mechanics of her situation to her.
”Wait, so… I have to do whatever Sieben-san says? Absolute obedience? Does that… does that include lewd stuff!?” Sango asked.
”Look, I’ve got enough on my plate. I’m not going to give you orders like that,” I replied.
”But I’m still a little worried…” Sango muttered.
Fair enough. I thought about it for a second and came up with a solution.
”Okay, Sango-chan, here’s an order: from now on, you follow Yokoo’s lead. Since I’m the ‘Master,’ I technically have the final say, but for all intents and purposes, Yokoo is your boss. Yokoo, you cool with that?”
”I’m more than okay with it!” Yokoo shouted nan-da-na.
”I’m fine with that too!” Sango agreed desu.
Sango seemed relieved. Better to stay with someone she knew and trusted than a masked stranger.
”But… try not to give me too many ‘naughty’ orders, Ma-niichan,” she teased.
”I – I wouldn’t dream of it!” Yokoo stammered nan-da-na.
Sango-chan just stuck her tongue out and giggled.
And so, the Yorozuya Dekoboko gained a new poster girl, and business was about to get a whole lot more lively.
”Then again… if it’s Ma-niichan, I guess I wouldn’t mind whatever he did to me,” Sango added, her face turning a bright, lovely crimson.
Seriously… Sango-chan is a total little devil.

Summary:
Sasaki Natsumi visits his companions, Yokoo and Tatei, to learn about summoning mechanics. He experiments with his newly acquired ‘Sacrifice Summoning’ and ‘Synthesis Summoning’ skills using a rabbit. After a series of evolutions, he creates a powerful Dimension Rabbit and enhances it using the corpse of Nigotori Maki.
Sasaki performs a ‘Normal Synthesis’ combining a Space-Time Rabbit with the corpse of Torimaki, resulting in the summoning of Torimaki Sango, a bunny-girl. The group discovers that Sango is Yokoo’s childhood friend and that memories of their group have been erased from their original world. Sango is officially assigned as a familiar under Yokoo’s supervision to join their shop.
—
Trivia:
- The protagonist has physical relationships with most clan members except Himezaki.
- Satsuki-chan, whose pet was sacrificed, is now referred to as ‘livestock’.
- Summoning is categorized into Familiar, Spirit, and Possession types.
- The ‘Pride’ category of the skill implies a sin related to playing God.
- Dimension Rabbits possess a super-rare (SR) skill called Spatial Jump.
- The rabbit familiar inherited 20% of Nigotori’s stats.
- Torimaki Sango is the younger sister of Ichigo.
- Sango was the only ‘normal’ member of the Torimaki family.
- A classmate back home was albino, which serves as a comparison for Sango’s appearance.
- The goddess God wiped the memories of the protagonist’s group from the old world.
- Sango has a white hair/red eye appearance due to the synthesis, not albinism
—
Character Insight:
Sasaki shows his cold and pragmatic side by sacrificing a former pet and using a human corpse for monster enhancement without much hesitation, though he still engages in comedic banter with his friends.
Sango shows a ‘little devil’ personality, being both innocent and teasingly provocative toward Yokoo, while displaying genuine trauma regarding the memory loss of her family. Yokoo shows extreme loyalty and affection for his childhood friend.
—
Behind the Scenes:
The ‘certain legendary RPG’ mentioned is a nod to the Shin Megami Tensei series, famous for its demon fusion mechanics.
The ‘MegaTen’ reference refers to the Shin Megami Tensei game series, known for demon fusion mechanics. The ‘I have no regrets’ line is a famous quote from Raoh in Fist of the North Star.
