Volume 5 Chapter 3 Reminiscence 3️⃣

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

In the pitch-black void, I float.

My body feels so light—like I’m soaring through the sky without wings. All around me, five glowing orbs gently drift in the dark. Their presence… it’s familiar. Like echoes of voices I heard not long ago.

The orbs float closer. One reaches me, touches my skin—and then, it sinks into me, vanishing. But it’s not gone. I feel it—like a part of it fused with me, as if our souls are now tangled together.

Then another comes. And another. One by one, they all enter me. Until all five become one inside my body.

Something is surging through me—running wild through my chest, my limbs, deep inside me.

Is this… magic? Or maybe… their lives? I don’t know.

But every time that power pulses inside me, my body burns hotter, expanding from the inside.

 I thought—I might actually explode.

It’s terrifying. So terrifying I start to cry. Tears leak out, my vision blurry, chest tight.

 It hurts so much.

 So much, I almost wished…

“Would it be easier… to just let go and die?”

That thought flickered through my mind. Just for a moment.

But no—I can’t. Even if I’m just a slave, even if happiness is impossible like this…

 ”I don’t want to die…!”

I screamed at the storm inside me, voice raw and full of desperation.

 ”Shut up!!!”

Suddenly—a burst of blinding white light engulfed everything.

 I couldn’t see anything.

When I came to… I was wrapped in warmth.

Mama Vintenica was holding me close.

”You did well, boy,” she whispered with a soft smile on half her face.

Her arms were tight around me. Her warmth felt real. Alive.

 Was all that a dream…?

 No—my body isn’t burnt. I’m not shattered.

 ”I… I’m alive…”

At my words, Mama nodded gently.

”Yes. You are alive, boy. You’ve gained something… truly miraculous.”

She stroked my hair like one would comfort a newborn, cradling me against her chest.

Then, still smiling, she looked into my eyes.

 ”What was your name again?”

 That’s when I realized.

She hadn’t known my name until now.

She didn’t see us as children. We were test subjects. Experiments.

And maybe… I was the first to succeed.

 That’s why—this terrifying witch—finally acknowledged me.

 Even so…

 ”My name is Soyuz… Mama.”

I said it clearly, meeting her eyes.

Because I wanted it to be true.

”Ah, that’s right. My cute boy… Soyuz. From today, you are my real child.”

Her voice trembled, full of joy.

I didn’t remember what a mother was. I only read about them in old books—about how mothers love their children.

 So I decided.

Even if I was a tool for her experiments—I’d believe that this woman, who calls me “child,” is my Mama.

That belief… would be my happiness.

A glowing purple magic circle pulsed faintly beneath us.

We were unclothed, but I didn’t mind. I was clinging to Mama’s chest like a baby, and she gently stroked my head, her hand warm and soft.

Still, I couldn’t help but wonder—

”Mama, can I ask you something?”

 ”What is it, boy?”

 ”What just happened to me…?”

At that, Mama’s expression turned solemn.

”What you now hold isn’t just magic. It’s something greater. A miracle born from my research.”

 ”A… miracle?”

”Yes. Soyuz, my sweet boy… from now on, you’ll face things far more terrifying than you can imagine. But—please don’t hate Mama. Help me… will you?”

Then, she gently let go and removed the mask from the right side of her face.

 ”────!?”

 I almost screamed.

The half of her face that was hidden…

It was burned—ravaged like it was still being scorched, the skin blackened and raw.

”Isn’t it… ugly?” she asked with a sad smile.

 ”W-What is… that…?”

”This is a curse,” she said quietly. “A demon gave me power. In return… I was cursed. A wound no healing magic can touch. If I try to break the curse, my body will crumble.”

 I swallowed hard.

The curse… was part of her life now.

”That’s why I’ve spent years researching a way to heal the body without lifting the curse.”

She looked at me, her visible eye soft.

”And then… I thought of it. ‘Sharing life force.’ Not just transferring it—binding it, so both can live.”

 She reached toward me slowly.

”But to do that, I needed a child… who wouldn’t break.”

 Her hand trembled.

”You… are that child. Soyuz… will you help Mama?”

Her voice was small, almost afraid.

 Even though I was scared… even though I didn’t fully understand…

I took her hand and said:

 ”Yes, Mama.”

 ”Kind boy…”

She held me close again, then crouched down in front of me.

 ”Show me your right hand.”

I stretched it out. Mama gently traced her finger across my palm—and then, without any wound, blood welled up.

 It didn’t hurt.

”Soyuz. Please—share a little of your life with me.”

 ”Yes,” I whispered.

The next moment—a strange feeling rippled through me.

 Not pain.

 Not fear.

 Warmth. Connection.

I felt like Mama was becoming part of me.

She brought my palm to her face—the one still burning.

 A soft light shone.

 ”Ahh…”

 ”Uhhh!?”

 We both gasped out loud.

Mama’s expression twisted in surprise—and something close to relief. I couldn’t tell if it was from pain, joy, or both.

The light grew stronger. It wrapped around us.

 My heart pounded.

 My whole body tingled.

For some reason, I felt like crying and laughing at once.

I saw her—Mama. Her damaged skin, slowly restoring. The burn vanishing.

 ”Mama… I love you…”

The words spilled from my mouth without thinking.

”Hehe… Mama also loves her little boy… hmm, phew…”

She smiled—more beautifully than I’d ever seen—and pressed my hand tighter against her face.

 And I—

 ”Mama… Mama… I like you… I like you…”

I said it again and again, heart full to bursting.

And then, just as her face finished healing—

My vision went white, and I lost consciousness again.
