Lately, it’s not like I haven’t felt like I’ve been doing nothing but diving into dungeons, but since we’re students, our regular classes are naturally still going on.
Just as another typical day of classes wrapped up, Youta came rushing over to my desk.
”Yo, Kanade! How’s it going?”
”Youta… Eh, I’m getting there,” I replied. “I haven’t cleared the requirements for ‘Phase One’ yet, but I feel like the training is finally starting to pay off. I think I’m getting close!”
”Well, you did pull that weird [Unique Job]… but honestly, if anyone can make it to ‘Phase One,’ it’s you. I’ve got a feeling that once you actually find your rhythm, you’ll probably blow past someone like me in no time.”
Youta said this while giving my shoulder a series of encouraging pats¹.
Despite pulling a ‘Winner Job’ like [Heavy Warrior], Youta hadn’t changed a bit; he was still the same great guy. As his friend, that made me really happy.
”Haha, what are you talking about? You’re the star [Heavy Warrior] around here… Anyway, how’ve you been doing lately?”
”Oh, actually, things are going pretty great,” Youta said. “I’m almost at the final floor of the ‘Phase One’ dungeon in front of the academy. Once I clear that… I’ll finally be able to start tackling ‘Phase Two’ dungeons with an official school party!”
Unlike ‘Phase Zero,’ ‘Phase One’ dungeons actually have monsters, but the content is basically what you’d call a ‘Tutorial Dungeon.’ It’s as if the place was designed specifically to test whether ‘Dungeon Explorers’ are actually ready for the real deal.
Once you hit ‘Phase Two,’ the monster strength and dungeon difficulty spike massively. Of course, the income from ‘Dungeon Stones’ and ‘Dungeon Materials’ ends up being in a completely different league, too.
”Man, you’re amazing, Youta. You’ve already got ‘Phase Two’ in your sights… but you can only join student-only parties while we’re at the academy, right? Do you have someone in mind?”
”Yeah. Maika already cleared Phase One… for now, we’ve already decided we’re going to party up together.”
”Huh… Wait, Maika? You mean Nagayama-san?”
”A-ah… Yeah… That’s the one……” Youta replied.
Nagayama Maika… She isn’t quite as extreme as Minami-chan, but she has a baby-face that’s incredibly cute. Naturally, she’s one of the most popular girls in class.
On top of pulling the top-tier [Magic User] job, she’s famous for hitting the jackpot by starting with the (Four Element Magic) skill.
”Something seems fishy here… Wait, Youta, since when did you start calling Nagayama-san by her first name?”
”A-ah, w-well, the truth is… we started dating. Me and Maika.”

”Hahaha, the real Maria-san from the Four Heavenly Kings is way out of my league. I mean, Maika is too, really… I just got incredibly lucky.”
”No kidding! Share some of that luck with me!”
”Hahaha! Alright, tell you what—I’m treating you to the Dorm Meal Special today!” Youta said. “I might only be in ‘Phase One,’ but I’m actually making some decent coin now!”
”Oh! Hell yeah! You’re the man, Youta! So generous!”
Trading jokes like that, we started heading toward the school dorms.
”Oh yeah… speaking of the Four Heavenly Kings, did you hear the rumors about the Prince?”
”The Prince… you mean Haruka-san?”
”Yeah, Haruka-sama… Apparently, she’s been looking really down lately.”
Haruka-san… If I recall, after she got her [Dungeon Job]…
”Wasn’t she dating Kosaka, the guy who dumped the Class President?” I asked.
”Yeah, there were rumors like that, but apparently someone was intentionally spreading lies,” Youta replied. “It’s true they were partners for dungeon practice for a bit, but I heard that’s already been called off.”
”Huh… I see. I mean, dumping a guy like Kosaka was definitely the right move, but I wonder if she’s the one who’s upset about it?”
”Hmm, knowing Haruka-sama’s personality, that seems a bit weird. I can’t imagine her wanting to be partners with a guy like Kosaka in the first place. Though I guess you could say the same about the Class President…”
The couple of Mana and Kosaka was definitely one of the ‘Seven Wonders’ of our school year.
Back then, I just assumed Mana had a thing for super-hot guys… but now that I know what she’s really like, it’s even more mysterious that she was ever with him.
Regardless… it seemed more likely that the reason Haruka-san was depressed had nothing to do with her breaking things off with Kosaka.
”Oh, the cafeteria is packed today! I’ll go grab the Specials like I promised! Go find us a seat!”
”Got it, thanks Youta!”
I watched Youta’s broad back as he walked away, then started scanning the cafeteria for an empty table.
