”I knew it, I’m a [Heavy Warrior]¹!” Youta shouted, pumping a fist. “It’s the Common Job I was aiming for, and the demand for them in dungeon parties is huge. I’m stoked!”
”That’s great, Youta! Congratulations,” I said.
”Thanks! I hope you pull a good one too, Kanade.”
”Yeah. I’d prefer a magic-type Job if possible… but honestly, as long as I can be a Dungeon Explorer, I’ll take anything. Anyway, it’s my turn. I’m going in.”
I stepped through the door Youta had just exited. The small room contained a single desk and two chairs. Seated in one was a striking, sophisticated woman in a white lab coat. Her bright brown hair stood out immediately. This was Ichigaya Rin, an academy teacher who held the [Appraiser] Job.
”My, it’s quite a crowd today…” Rin said with a tired sigh.
”Haha, well, everyone in our class started triggering their Jobs right in the middle of ‘Phase Zero’² training,” I replied.
”So it’s already that time of year. Since your class is the first up, I’m going to be stuck here for a while. It’s a seasonal tradition, I suppose, but it’s a rough stretch for me.”
Rin looked like she was mentally bracing herself for a long day.
(Is [Job Appraisal] really that difficult?) I wondered.
”Well, it certainly drains more [Dungeon Energy] than [Object Appraisal],” Rin said, as if reading my mind. “But really, it’s the talking that gets to me. Having to chat with so many people is exhausting.”
Despite being a beautiful woman who always seemed to be the center of attention, she appeared to have a bit of a shut-in streak.
”In that case, I’m sorry to add to the pile. I’m Hirosawa Kanade. I’ll be in your care today,” I said.
”Ufufu, don’t worry about it. I don’t mind at all if it’s a cute, quiet boy like you, Kanade-kun. This school is full of aggressive types, you know? The boy right before you was practically panting while staring at my chest the whole time.”
(What the hell were you doing, Youta? I thought you were a Higuchi-san fan!)
I wanted to call him out, but I couldn’t exactly blame him. The way her lab coat strained against her bust was impressive enough to rival even Higuchi-san. Even I had caught myself stealing a few glances.
”I… I’m sorry about him! And, uh, I might have accidentally looked too…” I stammered.
”Fufu, a little peek is fine, Kanade-kun. Boys are just wired that way. But that last boy looked like he was trying to use (X-ray Vision). Anyway, let’s get down to business. Put your hand right here.”
I placed my hand on the table, and Rin firmly pressed her palm over mine. Her hand was warm and incredibly soft. As a teenage boy, I felt my pulse start to race.
”Here we go… [Job Appraisal]… Oh? Well, this is a [Unique Job]³.”
”A… Unique Job?” I asked, leaning in.
Dungeon Jobs are categorized by rarity. Jobs like Youta’s [Heavy Warrior] are Common Jobs. A [Unique Job] is the total opposite—it’s believed that only one person in the entire world can hold a specific Unique Job at any given time.
”Yes. I’ve never heard of a [Vital Point Master]⁴ before, so it’s almost certainly a Unique Job,” Rin explained.
”Vital Point… Master?”
”Exactly. Since you’re such a sweetheart, I’ll give you a [Skill Appraisal] as a bonus. Your first Job Skill is called (Pressure Point). To put it simply, it’s a massage skill.”
”I see…”
So my first dungeon skill was (Pressure Point). A massage skill?
”You probably know this, but Unique Jobs usually manifest incredibly powerful skills. In that sense, I should congratulate you, but…” Rin paused, looking at me with a hint of uncertainty. “There’s almost no information on Unique Jobs. Unless a previous holder left records behind, we’re flying blind.”
”And there’s nothing on a Vital Point Master?”
”Nothing. I check the Comprehensive Catalog for my work, but I don’t recall seeing this one. It might have appeared in some tiny, isolated country that doesn’t share data, but who knows?”
It seemed my new Job was a complete mystery, even among other Uniques.
”So… what should I do now?” I asked.
Rin met my pleading gaze and smiled. “Well, you’ll have to figure out the skill’s mechanics bit by bit. Since we’re both here… why don’t we give it a little test run?”
