Volume 3 Chapter 24
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
We were gathered in the large conference room inside the Explorer Guild, which had been relocated to the Korakuen Dungeon.
Present in the conference room from ‘Resonant Melody’ were myself, Mana, Minami-chan, Haruka-san, Rin-sensei, Maria-san, and Sakurako-san. From our sub-members, Hiyori-san and Ruri-san were also in attendance.
Other explorers we did not recognize were also present, and among them were individuals who appeared to have no combat ability; perhaps they were family of the kidnapped victims. There were likely fifty people in total.
Looking around, it seemed this gathering was not for High-Level Dungeon Explorers, but rather specifically for those involved in this incident.
The Guild Master stood facing us and opened the meeting.
”I apologize for the delay,” the Guild Master stated. “There were unavoidable Guild matters to attend to following the relocation, and collecting information regarding the kidnapping of Tanaka Aina and the others took some time. Now, let us first share the details of the kidnapping incident that occurred.”
The Guild Master touched the tablet resting on the table.
Immediately, the tablet’s screen was projected onto the front of the conference room.
Displayed there was a map from the Tokyo Dungeon to the Korakuen Dungeon.
It was the very route we had just traveled for our move.
”This attack was likely not spontaneous, but rather carefully planned,” the Guild Master continued, his tone clipped and procedural. “The attacks occurred simultaneously at three locations, and the assaulting groups were by no means small.”
As the Guild Master spoke, three red circular marks appeared on the map.
The attack on Maria-san, which I had witnessed, was the one closest to Tokyo, but it appeared that multiple strikes were carried out simultaneously elsewhere.
”The group that appeared at this location, closest to the Korakuen Dungeon, was led by a man with black, long hair tied back, and consisted of several dozen people,” the Guild Master explained. “On average, they possessed ‘Phase Four’ level combat ability. The long-haired man, who appeared to be the leader, used magic-type skills such as fire and water, in addition to something resembling illusions. Were it not for this man, the group could have been repelled, but while distracted by these troublesome arts, five women were abducted.”
”I see,” I muttered to myself. Fire, water, and illusions—it sounds like a ninja, but when you consider facing one, illusions are an incredibly troublesome skill.
”Next, the second attack occurred at this center point,” the Guild Master said. “This was a group of several dozen people led by a short-haired man with his face hidden. Their average strength was also ‘Phase Four’ level. The leader, the short-haired man, possessed ‘Phase Five’ level power—what we would have called an A-Rank Explorer in the former classification system. Given that he concealed his face, it is possible he was a well-known explorer. Compared to the illusionist’s group, this one was relatively easier to handle, but the leader still managed to abduct two women.”
I thought to myself, (We in ‘Resonant Melody’ were also an A-Rank Dungeon Explorer team once, but it would be naive to assume all A-Rank explorers were good people.) It seems someone who had masqueraded as a criminal was leading one of the attack groups.
”The final attack occurred at this point, slightly closer to the Korakuen Dungeon,” the Guild Master continued. “Only one attacker was confirmed: a man with light-brown hair. You might think this was the least dangerous attack because it was only one person, but that is not the case. This man apparently possessed the ability to manipulate ‘Phase Five’ or higher monsters, and one of those was a ‘Phase Six’ level Black Dragon.”
At the Guild Master’s words, signs of distress rippled through the room.
For most people, a ‘Phase Six’ monster is the very embodiment of despair. Especially since the people in this room still have vivid memories of Japan being devastated during the ‘Phase Six’ Stampede1.
”Fortunately, because ‘Resonant Melody’ transcendent-level explorer Higuchi Maria was there, we managed to contain it, but otherwise, there would have been many casualties,” the Guild Master stated. “One woman was kidnapped here as well.”
That would be Aina-chan, who was taken by that man before I arrived. By the time I reached the site, both the Black Dragon and the man were gone. The time between the start of the attack and my arrival was short, suggesting the operation was planned to conclude as quickly as possible.
”That concludes the overview of the incident,” the Guild Master said. “All three leaders of these attacker groups mentioned an organization called the ‘KSK Group’. This name does not appear on the criminal list maintained by the Dungeon Explorer Guild or the Dungeon City Union. It is likely an emerging group, but it seems there were faces among the attackers that were known in criminal circles. It is possible that this ‘KSK Group’ consolidated various scattered anti-social factions and led them in this attack.”
The ‘KSK Group’ that united criminal factions. KSK has a nasty ring to it; it was clearly a dangerous criminal entity.
”This is unconfirmed, but there is information suggesting the three leaders are brothers,” the Guild Master added. “Criminal groups bound by blood often resist to the bitter end when cornered. We will now finalize the plan to rescue the abductees, and I ask that all participants in the operation remain highly vigilant.”
At the Guild Master’s words, the explorers in the room nodded in unison.
