Vital-Master v3c48

Volume 3 Chapter 48

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 Phase Six, Floor 66.

We moved through the ‘Phase Six’ dungeon’s sixty-sixth floor—a sprawling, featureless grassland area. It was relatively easy to fight in, mostly because there was nothing to obstruct our view.

We had technically passed the midpoint of the deepest, most difficult part of the dungeon, but our progress was nothing short of smooth sailing.

By this point, the monsters had become far too dangerous for Minami-chan, Haruka-san, or Maria-san to handle alone, so they shifted into support roles, helping Mana, who took point. Mana primarily relied on close-quarters combat enhanced by her (Dungeon Energy Cloak). With the amount of internal energy she’d built up from clearing the deepest levels, combined with the rare combat instinct she’d possessed since her days at the Dungeon Academy, every punch she threw was an instant-kill weapon.

”Haaaaaaah!” Mana shouted, her voice echoing across the plain.

Mana kicked off the ground, launched herself into the air, and drove her fist straight into the face of an Emperor Fenrir that had tried to block her path.

The beast, already weakened from our earlier skirmishes, shattered into a cloud of smoke. She landed lightly, high-fiving Minami-chan, Haruka-san, and Maria-san with a grin.

”Did ya see that?” Mana cheered, her voice carrying a Northern English working-class warmth. “Proper smashed ‘im, didn’t I?”

Beyond them, I could see Sakurako-san, holding her own against a dragon in a solo duel. Thanks to (Permanent Pressure Point), she didn’t have to waste time re-applying her skills, allowing her to benefit from the [Samurai of Solitude] buff. She had grown powerful enough to possess the energy levels of a ‘Phase Six’ deep-layer veteran. She didn’t even need to use any high-level skills; she just methodically carved the dragon’s hide to ribbons with her blade.

It was a standard dragon, mind you—nowhere near as strong as the Black Dragon that the eldest Kosaka had controlled back when he was a threat. We wouldn’t encounter those until the seventy-second floor.

I’d been there to stop him, but if I hadn’t, the Kosaka brothers could easily have become a global catastrophe. Thanks to that Slave Choker, they were currently serving their time in the Dungeon Labor Penalty. I couldn’t help but wonder—would they ever truly have a change of heart?

Because the incident resulted in no fatalities or sexual assaults within ‘New Tokyo,’ they’d been sentenced to ten years of hard labor. If they showed genuine remorse, they might get paroled, or perhaps, if they didn’t, the choker would never come off. That was for the Dungeon Explorer Guild—led by Guild Master Saori—and the city officials to decide.

”…Right. This is the one,” I muttered.

While I was lost in thought, letting the others handle the heavy lifting, I’d been busy doing my own thing. I reached down and plucked a single blade of grass from the prairie.

They call these [Teleportation Grass].1 You need them to travel from the sixty-sixth floor to the sixty-seventh because there are no stairs leading down. To the naked eye, it looked just like any other blade of grass. But with my ‘Perception Enhancement’ cranked up to 500x, the difference was obvious. Normally, you’d need someone with an (Appraisal Skill) like Rin-sensei to find these, but I could just brute-force my way through the problem.

”Man… you’d normally have to hunt for these while fighting off dragons and Emperor Fenrirs, one for every party member. ‘Phase Six’ is honestly brutal.”

It wasn’t just this floor, either. Every floor of this dungeon was packed with devious gimmicks; lose your focus for even a second, and you’re dead.

”Everyone! I’ve got enough [Teleportation Grass] for all of us!” I called out.

At my call, Mana, Minami-chan, Haruka-san, Maria-san, and Sakurako-san gathered around. We all held them in our hands and chewed them at the same time. It didn’t taste particularly good, but as we swallowed, our bodies teleported into a dark, cavernous space.

About a hundred meters behind us was a staircase—a strange, one-way exit that would take us back to the sixty-sixth floor. Once you used it, though, it vanished for good.

 Rumble…

We were in the cave now, but the moment we arrived, a low, ominous sound began to echo.

The next second, the ceiling above us came crashing down with terrifying force. It would have crushed us flat, but—

”…I was pretty freaked out the first time I saw this teleportation trap,” I said, holding both hands up, catching the collapsing ceiling and bracing it firmly.

”My goodness,” Sakurako-san remarked, her voice measured and precise. “If it hadn’t been you testing this place first, Kanade-kun, we might have been seriously injured, if not worse…”

”Mana-chi, Sakurako-chi, and Maria-chi would probably be fine,” Minami-chan added, her tone bubbly and youthful, “but someone with low defense like me would be in trouble. I could escape if I knew the map, but still…”

”I might have been badly hurt if my skills hadn’t fired in time, too,” Sakurako-san agreed.

”I’m good at this sort of thing!” Maria-san chirped, her voice full of idol-like energy. “But I don’t think I could hold up a ceiling by myself like Kanade-sama can!”

”I could run for it,” Haruka-san added, “but carrying everyone else out? Probably not happening.”

”It’s surprisingly powerful, too,” I said, straining against the weight. “I guess the dungeon really is trying to kill explorers, probably just to feed on our Soul Force.”

”Indeed,” Sakurako-san replied. “Well, Kanade-kun, we shouldn’t keep you holding that up forever. Shall we move on?”

”Yeah, yeah! This is the trap floor, right?” Maria-san exclaimed.

”That’s right!” I grunted. “Lots of nasty traps, but no monsters. It’s not my strong suit, but with Kanade here, we’ll be fine.”

”With Kanade-kun’s perception abilities,” Haruka-san noted, “those traps don’t stand a chance.”

”Kanade-sama is so cool,” Maria-san added with a sparkle in her voice. “I’m going to follow you forever!”

Since I’d navigated this path so many times before, we cleared the sixty-seventh floor without a hitch, eventually falling through a hole disguised as a pitfall—a teleportation trap leading to the sixty-eighth floor.

 —

 Summary:

The party navigates the sixty-sixth floor of the ‘Phase Six’ dungeon, successfully bypassing monsters and collecting essential teleportation items. Upon transitioning to the sixty-seventh floor, they encounter a lethal ceiling-collapse trap which the protagonist manually holds up to ensure their safety. The team then proceeds to navigate the trap-filled layer before discovering the hidden entrance to the sixty-eighth floor.

 —

 Trivia:

The protagonist’s ‘Perception Enhancement’ is dialed to 500x.

The teleportation grass is visually identical to normal grass to the average eye.

The one-way stairs to the previous floor disappear after use.

The trap ceiling is designed to feed off the Soul Force of explorers.
