Chapter 90 The Angel’s Messenger

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

We were enjoying dessert and the show in the theater’s lavish private room when Princess Liliana’s escort knight—Serena Crystalight—reappeared.

Apparently, she’d arrived at the theater ahead of Princess Liliana to check the security and safety of this room.

”By Liliana-sama’s orders,” she announced. “Her Highness will arrive shortly by carriage, under heavy guard from the Royal Palace’s knights.”

Well, this meeting was happening right after that horrific bombing. I could not blame them for being cautious.

Even though I knew there was no real danger—since I was the culprit—I had to keep up appearances. If I didn’t play the part, I’d look suspicious.

Of course, I’d taken my own precautions.

Since we were the ones who’d actually been attacked, I had our security on maximum alert. I had the Hawk beast-kin operatives watching from above the theater.

I’d ordered Kyle, the elf I could use as a disposable pawn, to patrol the theater’s perimeter. I’d given him the green light to attack anyone suspicious-looking.

Ashraf, the teleportation demon, was guarding the mansion. There was always the chance they’d strike while I was away.

I had no clue what crazy stunt that “Explosion Killing Angel” Princess Liliana would pull next. So I made sure we were ready for anything.

”If you haven’t dined yet, we can have a meal prepared for you as well, Serena-jou.”

Since I wasn’t actually having dinner with Princess Liliana, I hadn’t arranged any food for her. But a word to the theater’s excellent staff, and they’d whip up something nice in no time.

”No, I do appreciate the offer, but I’m on duty right now,” Serena replied. “Please, don’t worry about me. You all go ahead and enjoy your meal.”

Serena was such a serious, good-natured girl.

To me, she seemed far more worthy of the title “angel” than Liliana ever did. Her hair, silver as moonlight, glowed softly in the dim, tranquil light.

”If you’d like a tour of the theater,” I offered, “I’d be happy to show you around myself. We have plenty of areas that aren’t open to the public.”

”Oh, I couldn’t possibly impose, Xenos-sama. I’ve already troubled you enough.”

She was so quiet. I would like to get closer to her.

I rose from my seat and took her beautiful hand. Her cool fingers brushed against mine.

”Please,” I said, looking directly into her eyes. “From now on, call me Xenos.”

I decided to lay on the charm.

Serena met my gaze, and a faint blush crept across her pale cheeks.

 (…Alright. I’d call that a win.)

Behind me, I felt the cold, disapproving stares of three beautiful women—but I ignored them completely.

”Ah, um…! Th-then, p-please feel free to call me Serena as well… Xenos-sama.”

Her flustered response told me she was not put off by me at all.

After that, I spent a while smoothing things over with the three women, who had grown a bit peeved, and finished my meal.

Soon enough, the show downstairs ended, and the guests trickled out. The only ones left in the spacious theater were the staff cleaning up and Serena, who had been checking the basement where the meeting would be.

(Come to think of it, meeting this late… is that really okay? Shouldn’t that little princess be fast asleep by now?)

Just as we were waiting in the soundproofed VIP area downstairs for Princess Liliana—the supposed guest of honor—to arrive, an urgent call came in from Kyle, who’d been keeping watch outside.

Apparently, the Royal Family’s Holy Knights had surrounded the theater in full force. And leading them was—

 Crown Prince Liam.

Outside, the atmosphere had completely changed. Under the bright streetlights, rows of knights stood in formation, radiating a frigid tension.

”—What is the meaning of this, Your Highness?” I asked calmly, stepping out to face Prince Liam and his Holy Knights.

”Xenos Grimlock,” Prince Liam declared, his voice cold and unwavering. “You stand accused of kidnapping my sister, Liliana. I will have you cooperate while we search this theater from top to bottom.”

…Kidnapping? What the hell was he talking about?

”If I may, Your Highness—I was informed this meeting was proposed by Princess Liliana herself. We were merely waiting here as arranged. Surely this must be some mistake?”

I had no idea what was going on.

But I had to refuse. The thought of them tramping through the theater unchecked did not sit well with me. Besides, the real princesses of the Zahara Kingdom were working here incognito.

They had disguised themselves with the [Ring of Transformation], so it probably would not be an issue. But I also employed elves and beast-kin—several of them. If the Holy Knights found them, it could cause serious trouble.

 I wanted to avoid that.

On top of that, in a hidden room beneath the theater, I’d been stockpiling a massive amount of gold and silver coins as funds for the upcoming rebellion.

That, too, I’d rather keep under wraps.

Missing princess sisters, ties with elves and beast-kin, a hidden room packed with gold coins. None of it was illegal, but all of it was something I would rather keep quiet.

”Even if you’ve come in person, Your Highness,” I said, meeting his gaze steadily, “this is a private establishment. I cannot allow a search based on nothing but a baseless kidnapping accusation. I’ll have to ask you to leave.”

Even if he was a prince, he couldn’t just force his way into a facility owned by a high-ranking noble like me—especially without proper cause. I used my family’s influence and flatly refused the prince’s demand.

Prince Liam and I stood before the night theater, locking eyes. Silent, but the air between us burned.

 Summary:

Xenos enjoys a post-bombing theater dinner with his harem when Serena arrives to secure the venue for Princess Liliana’s meeting. After charming Serena and smoothing over tensions with his companions, an urgent report reveals Crown Prince Liam has surrounded the theater with Holy Knights to accuse Xenos of kidnapping Liliana. Xenos refuses the search, using his noble authority to challenge the prince, ending in a tense standoff outside the theater.

 —

 Trivia:

Xenos knows Liliana is the true culprit behind the bombing and is framing him for kidnapping.

Serena is genuinely attracted to Xenos despite her formal duty to Liliana.

The theater employs disguised princess sisters from the Zahara Kingdom and various elves/beast-kin.

Xenos has stockpiled rebellion funds in a hidden theater room.

The [Ring of Transformation] allows the princess sisters to work incognito.

Xenos’s Grimlock family status is his primary political shield against royalty.

The “Explosion-Killing Angel” is Xenos’s ironic nickname for Liliana.

Three unnamed women are part of Xenos’s harem and show jealousy.

The standoff occurs at night after the theater show has ended.

Holy Knights are the Royal Family’s elite military force.
