Chapter 92 The Princess’s Rebuke and the Cat-and-Dog Argument
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The three idiots were snorting with righteous fury.
Backed by two hundred Holy Knights, they were ready to force their way into my theater for a search.
In the dark night, the countless suits of armor caught the lamplight, casting an eerie gleam. The distant crackle of torches and the faint scrape of metal heightened the tension.
For a moment, I was stunned by these three and their short-sighted scheme.
But I could not stand here frozen.
This was my turf. No way in hell I was letting them run roughshod over it.
I gathered mana into my body, ready to put them in their place by force—
Then it happened.
A clear, commanding voice cut through the air, freezing the scene.
”—Stop right there, you damn fools!”
It was Princess Elenor.
”Do you have any idea what you’re doing?” she demanded. “Forcing an unreasonable search on a Grimlock family property—you would only be handing ammunition to the pro-war faction nobles who are already a pain in the arse. Are you really too stupid to see that?!”
At Elenor’s thunderous rebuke, the three idiots, who had been full of bluster moments before, deflated like scolded puppies. Even the muscle-headed Aldrick had no authority against Elenor, Prince Liam’s elder sister.
Her single shout stopped them.
Prince Azim, that hopeless sis-con, had been running wild, convinced he would find his missing sister. But this was foreign territory. He seemed to finally realize his reckless actions could become a fatal mistake for the peace cause.
Her words snapped him back to his senses.
And then there was Elliot.
That bastard had probably known how dangerous this was, but he’d been willing to provoke a bigger incident anyway, purely out of spite. Still, even Elliot could not keep going once the princess had dressed him down so directly.
Unable to defy her, he just stood there growling, “Gununu…”1
His frustration had nowhere to go but toward me. Elliot glared at me with murderous intent, then struck a pose and pushed up his glasses with one finger.
”Damn you, Grimlock…” he spat. “Bringing Elenor-sama to a place as disreputable as this… It seems I’ll have to put an end to you by any means necessary.”
My theater was not shady. That claim had no basis.
As always, Elliot’s murderous intent toward me was over the top.
Just then, an unexpected person launched an attack on Elliot.
It was Kyle the elf, who had been watching like a bystander.
”Hey, Glasses over there,” Kyle called out. “You seem pretty hung up on that princess, but from where I’m standing, you just look pathetic.”
”…What?” Elliot’s voice went cold. “Pathetic? In what manner, exactly?”
Elliot and Kyle launched into a childish shouting match.
But Prince Liam and Elenor, as if they’d already stopped paying attention to the two of them, moved on to discussing the next phase of the investigation.
”Then, Sister and Serena-jou,” Prince Liam said, “I’ll leave the underground search to you. I’ll take Elliot, Aldrick, and Azim to search the ground-floor rooms thoroughly.”
”Good,” Elenor replied. “Make sure you don’t cause any more trouble. Keep your own subordinates in check, Liam.”
Elenor’s stern words made Prince Liam wince. He’d been ogling my fiancée Cecilia, neglecting his duties as a leader.
Speaking of which, Cecilia had slipped behind me to escape Prince Liam’s gaze.
”Then I’ll stay here in the entrance hall with Cecilia and Lizel and keep an eye on the search’s progress,” I said. “As for the Holy Knights you brought with you—sorry, but they’ll have to wait outside.”
Having two hundred Holy Knights swarm my theater was out of the question. But if it was just a few people searching the interior, that was fine.
After some discussion, the matter settled on a practical compromise both sides could accept.
I stayed put in the entrance hall with Cecilia and Lizel.
I had not done anything illegal in this theater. Plus, I had equipped the desert princess sisters and the elves with [Rings of Transformation]. No chance they would see through it.
So I settled in comfortably on the sofa, flanked by two beautiful girls.
I let myself enjoy their warmth, their softness, the faint scent of their hair.
I glanced over at Prince Liam—he was glaring at me with jealousy as I held Cecilia close.
I pulled her tighter, almost like I was showing off.
I could practically hear his teeth grinding.
But now was not the time for personal feelings.
He was in the middle of searching for Princess Liliana, who had been kidnapped and gone missing. Prince Liam went to call his aide, Elliot.
”You seem to think that your crush got stolen by that guy,” Kyle said, “but you’ve got it all wrong. That princess you like isn’t yours to begin with. Who she loves is her own business, isn’t it? And yet you go crazy with jealousy, holding a grudge against the man she’s with—that’s just ridiculous. If you love her that much, go tell her yourself. Win her over by force.”
”…You,” Elliot seethed, “a commoner, and you dare to lecture me? If it were merely about me, that would be one thing—but to refer to Elenor-sama as ‘that princess’ is unforgivable. You have no conception of the devotion I pour into serving Elenor-sama each day. It is easy for you, a carefree commoner, to speak so lightly. But we nobles have a duty: we must place our house above all else! We cannot simply act upon our own selfish feelings like irresponsible fools!”
Elliot and Kyle were still going at it with their pointless argument.
I had thought they might get along, but their chemistry was terrible.
Their pride and values clashed. Like two flames that mirrored each other but would never merge.
A classic case of mutual dislike.
”You’re pathetic, you shitty four-eyes…” Kyle muttered. “Looking at you just pisses me off for some reason.”
”Shut up,” Elliot shot back. “Do not butt in when you have nothing to do with this. You are the one who is too much of a coward to act when it matters, are you not?”
The exchange of insults continued.
They kept hurling abuse at each other until Prince Liam, with a tone of exasperation, called out: “Elliot! We’re leaving!”
