”I can’t stand the thought of Sir Hero leaving the village and not being able to eat chicken ham anymore.”
”That kid should stop being a Hero and settle down here in this village.”
It’s common in every village to match capable people with partners to keep them close, not just Hero.
”I think that’s a good idea, but right now, there are no suitable girls of the right age.”
”Anita, the village head’s daughter, will be a fine woman in 2 years.”
”My daughters are all excited about marrying Sir Hero, but the oldest just turned ten!”
The church forbids marriage under 12, but since record-keeping is loose, it’s okay if a girl looks mature enough.
In Toyata village, most girls marry at 16, and if they’re past 18, they are seen as late bloomers.
”Isn’t the scribe’s daughter 16 this year? She was 2 years younger than my daughter who got married.”
When the scribe Mauro is mentioned, everyone suddenly goes quiet.
The scribe’s job is to prepare documents for villagers who can’t read or write, so he’s a notable figure, but he is treated like a pariah due to his poor social skills.
He leaves all the housework to maids, and his wife and daughter rarely leave the mansion.
”That girl… I think her personality doesn’t match well with Hero.”
”That’s right, even Hero has the right to choose his partner.”
Talking about the scribe seems to be a taboo, and after that, no one wanted to bring it up again.
”If there are no unmarried girls, we really have to step up.”
It’s not uncommon for nobles and rich people to have multiple wives, and sometimes one wife has several husbands.
There are various reasons for this, like if a husband has low economic strength, poor health, or if a stunningly beautiful woman attracts many suitors, as long as the husbands agree, the church will grant permission.
”If I’m as pretty as Ms. Flare, it wouldn’t be odd for me to have at least one more husband.”
”You know your guy gets jealous, right? It’s definitely not going to work out. But I really love that cute Hero. Maybe it’s okay to teach him a thing or 2 before he gets caught by a bad woman.”
Ms. Flare, who was called out by name, didn’t seem completely against it but gently declined.
They aren’t having any real problems in their marriage, so she probably doesn’t want to change her current life.
”If it’s teaching, I’m not bad at it either!”
As part of sex education, it’s not seen as a big deal for a grown woman to engage with a young man, and it’s often called teaching.
As long as you don’t drag out relationships for too long or have many partners, it’s even seen as a good way to raise young people.
This custom is a leftover from the time when the church exercised the right of the first night, but that’s another story.
”Um, everyone, what do you think about me breaking up with my current husband? I really want to.”
”Don’t do it, it’ll turn into a mess. It sounds fun, but it’ll bother Sir Hero.”
”So, isn’t it fine if it’s you, Ms. Erin?”
”Ah.”
Ms. Erin the elf is a widow, so there’s no problem with getting married, but nobody noticed until someone pointed it out.
”That’s a good idea, but there are all those elf rules, right?”
”Well, I can manage the rules, but with an old lady like me, it would be sad for Sir Hero.”
Ms. Erin, who has a bit of a crush on the Hero, started to fidget like a shy girl, even though she’s over a hundred years old.
Considering the age difference, she can’t bring it up herself, but if everyone pushes her, she thinks it wouldn’t be so bad.
”But if that kid is my husband, every day might be really fun. If everyone insists… I wouldn’t mind helping out the village…──Everyone… what’s wrong? This is strange… is this some kind of mental magic?”
The once lively women suddenly went quiet, realizing something was off, but Ms. Erin was already falling into someone’s trap.
The women around her, with blank expressions, began to sink one by one into the water.
Ms. Erin fought with all her might against the overwhelming urge to sleep, but it felt like her efforts were in vain.
”What’s happening to me… Sir Hero, please help me…”
Ms. Erin’s expression as she was pulled into the dark water was one of ecstasy, for some reason.
