Volume 3 Chapter 11 The Side Story of the Village Butcher – Part II

”I’ve received a special compliment for your work, so be grateful. Here’s the price for the quail.”
The man said he was a servant for a rich person.
He gave Nora 3 gold coins, all fancy.
Chaa copied Nora and bowed, but he was not happy.
He thought he could meet a rich person.
But he only met a servant acting high and mighty at the back door of the inn.
The servant did not even look at him.
”Oh well. By the way, you didn’t forget we will get married, right?”
On the way home, Chaa was excited and talked to Nora.
She put on makeup because he thought she might meet a rich person.
Nora looked as pretty as Flare today.
Chaa always liked how round her body was.
Chaa was happy just thinking that she would be his wife.
”Are you stupid? When did I say that?”
Nora looked at Chaa like he was silly and walked ahead.
Chaa felt like cold water on his heart.
Again. Luck always makes a trap for him.
Chaa cursed luck.
But his smart brain didn’t stop there.
It started working even harder, going through his memories to find the problem.
Chaa remembered he thought he had a deal with Nora, but he never really talked to her about it properly.
He kept telling people Nora was crazy about him, and he started believing it too.
But that wasn’t true, and he realized he made a big mistake because he was too excited.
He should have made Nora promise things before giving her the quail.
She’s a tricky merchant, and if he didn’t, she could just say she didn’t know later.
At first, he planned to make Nora promise things before giving her the quail, but after he got it from the Hero, he got too happy and forgot to be careful.
Too much good luck can cause problems, and he messed up at the most important part.
He started sweating nervously all over.
After taking some deep breaths, Chaa felt a little better and could think clearly again.
He didn’t do everything right this time, but he still did something good for Nora.
He decided to think positively and just wait a little longer for the fun.
”So, what about my cut for this job?”
Three common gold coins (1 common = 10,000 gold coin) is a lot of money.
He’s the one who worked hard this time, and Noora didn’t do a thing.
Let’s put the wife talk aside for now; he has got to make sure I get my fair share at least.
In Chaa’s mind, he’s concluded that he can claim at least 2 of those coins.
”According to the guild rules, your share is capped at 4000, you know.”
Among the merchant guild, the meat, salt, and wine departments are strictly managed by the guild for pricing.
As long as you follow the guild’s instructions and run your business seriously, anyone can make a profit.
Stores that last for generations often accumulate immense wealth, and most village heads in remote villages are either tavern keepers or butchers.
Chaa’s scheme to become a village head was also influenced by this kind of backdrop; it wasn’t entirely reckless.
But right now, bringing up the guild’s rules is only hurting Chaa.
”You’re selling it for 30,000 gold and my cut is only 4,000? That’s just not right!”
”Well, I think so too, but let it go this time.”
”Are you going to take this up with the guild?”
”I was planning to file a report on this deal anyway. If it’s a noble who pays well, that’s great, but I’d like them to spare the market, you know?”
