Volume 3 Chapter 10-2 The Side Story of the Village Butcher – Part I
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Then, a big change came for Chaa.
A skinny boy, a Hero from another world, started selling brown quail.
He killed them, even though it was hard for skilled hunters.
Chaa could sell the expensive quail meat to the meat shop in the next town.
He could finally stop depending on his childhood friend, Nora.
* * *
And then, the day of (luck) fate came.
Chaa went to the next town to get meat, like always.
Nora, who he hadn’t seen much lately, was crying.
She said a noble who visited the town wanted a whole quail.
The butcher knew that was a crazy request.
The Merchant’s Guild wouldn’t punish them for not having it.
But nobles don’t care about logic.
If things go well, it’s fine, but if they get angry, it’s bad.
Chaa had an idea, but he didn’t promise anything.
It was his important girl’s request.
It was a hard thing to do, but he would try his best.
He looked cool, but he didn’t make any promises and went back to Toyata village.
Back in the village, Chaa waited in front of his shop for the Hero to pass by.
He knew the Hero boy killed one quail every day.
The problem was, the Hero might sell the quail to the Guild.
He always bought the quail at a high price, and he thought the Hero was ungrateful.
But not today.
Nora should have asked the Adventurer Guilds in the nearby villages.
He might lose money, but they were more reliable than the Merchant’s Guild in these situations.
The Adventurer Guild could buy the quail at a high price, ignoring the market price.
But he was in the Merchant’s Guild, so he had to follow their prices, and couldn’t raise the price that much.
The buyback price was originally a rule set to prevent wealthy merchants from monopolizing skilled hunters.
But in reality, this rule lets merchants buy from hunters for a much lower price.
They have little room to negotiate because of the set price.
However, this time, the limit on the buyback amount becomes a troublesome shackle for Chaa.
If Hero sells the quail to the Adventurer Guild for a higher price, there’s no way to create a favor with Nora.
If Chaa can’t have it, he must at least stop it from being sold to the guild; he can’t lose face like that.
Chaa clutches his special Totoanaemperor silver coin and waits for Hero.
Although the face value exceeds the merchant guild’s regulations, it’s a slightly worn silver coin, so it should be barely acceptable.
Plus, a small one-time violation probably won’t be a problem; as long as it doesn’t get found out, that’s all that matters.
He just needs to shove cash at Hero and snatch the quail before he can say anything.
That Hero is annoyingly humble, just a weak little punk, with no skills besides hunting quail.
More than anything, he has been quite kind to Hero all this time; he’ll give the kid a chance to repay him as a life mentor.
Sweat pours down like a waterfall in the summer sun, but right now, he doesn’t care about that.
After marrying Nora, he plans to make that struggle worth it a hundred times over.
How long has he waited?
He hears the familiar sound of dragging feet, like a stick, in his ears.
Chaa instantly recognizes that it’s the sound of the delicate doll-like girl Hero is with.
As expected, Hero appears, carrying a quail.
And it’s not just any quail; it looks pretty impressive.
If he delivers this, Nora will surely cry tears of joy.
Chaa darts out in front of Hero like a tumble.
”Hey there. That’s a nice quail; leave it here.”
He speaks casually, imagining himself as the friendly older brother.
”Um, well, I have to report this to the guild first…”
Hero tried to walk away, but Chaa wouldn’t let him.
Chaa ran in front of Hero, trying to stop him.
”It’s a monster hunt, right? For quail, you only need the head.”
Chaa shoved a silver coin into Hero’s hand.
”Here, take this. Leave the quail.”
Chaa’s dead father always said, money speaks louder than words.
Chaa hated his father, but liked that saying.
”Totoana emperor silver coin, not great condition, about 420 gold~desuwa.”
Hero’s doll started talking.
It was pretty, but skinny.
Not Chaa’s type.
Chaa likes women with big bodies.
The doll was the opposite.
Chaa snatched the quail from Hero, who was still thinking.
His bad luck always ruined his dreams at the last second.
But this time.
This time, everything will be okay.
Chaa was smiling wide.
