Volume 11 Chapter 3 The Course of a Confused Battle
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
After departing Sanrid, the Beast Country army marched north toward Orrid. Tensions ran high among Klock’s companions—Rosetta and Kuzuha, both carrying his child, vied for his attention during the long carriage ride—but before the army could reach the Star Fort, they were hit by a sudden enemy ambush.
”Total wipe. They really wrecked this place.”
Moving north, the Beast Country army finally reached the first fortress—the Star Fort, once held by Klock and his men. Outer walls were gone, inner halls wide open. The chapel and other buildings, though their foundations were intact, had been gutted clean. Rebuilding was a pipe dream.
”This is pure spite. Sir Klock, pray you’re ready if they ever capture you.”
”Hey, don’t blame me for this.”
During the fort’s defense, they took out thousands of monsters, including the big ones. It was likely only a fraction of their forces, but this fort had become a symbol of their defeat. Reducing it to rubble sent a message: no dissent.
That told him about Bandanzine. A guy who’d go to such petty lengths wasn’t retreating just because things got rough. Unless he took a huge loss, he wasn’t going home.
As far as the eye could see, ruins and debris. Moats filled in, walls shattered, mansions collapsed. It was taken apart so it could never be rebuilt.
Klock sighed. They’d worked so hard to keep it. After they handed it over, did it even serve any purpose? It left a hollow, frustrating feeling.
”It’s a dump, but we’re staying the night. Better than nothing.”
The sun was down. Under Rosetta’s orders, they set up camp fast and braced for the night. Troop management was her job. Klock went to the chapel alone. Seeing the room with its missing wall made him feel empty.
”Heh, tough luck. Can’t bring a girl home to this, can you!”
At the girl’s grinning voice, Klock frowned. Rachel had dropped onto a miraculously intact bench nearby, hands behind her head.
”Hey, when are you actually deploying that Magic squad? Everyone’s getting restless, wanting their turn to shine.”
”Using them burns through magic stones like crazy, so timing’s a nightmare. But for a final battle? Yeah, worth dumping everything.”
”So it might happen this time?”
She looked restless too. Rachel and Kaitney had been kept in the rear this whole campaign, but she could unleash ‘Dragon Flame’ magic using magic stones.
It was pure fire from raw magic power, thrown away. Not efficient, but the destruction was massive. If they faced the Demonkin in a decisive battle, even a small, well-timed push could turn the tide.
”Anyway, why are you here?”
”I saw you sneaking off alone, so I thought I’d catch you cheating.”
”You’ve got a scary talent as a disciple, you know?”
Rachel had gotten sharper. Since they were alone in the ruined chapel, he sealed it with a few quick kisses.
”Whew… time for bed.”
”Huh?”
He tried to head back to his tent, but Rachel grabbed his clothes. He looked back—his disciple was glaring.
”What? Look, it’s time to sleep. Let go.”
”Ugh, ghh…!”
Her eyes teared up. She gritted her teeth at his grin, then—
”I came here to have sex with you, you idiot—figure it out already!”
She shouted, face bright red. She’d come all the way to this dark place to be alone with a man. Didn’t take a genius. Flustered, she turned red to her ears and started swinging.
If he tried this with Rosetta, he’d be dead. Teasing the Wolf Princess was life-threatening, but with Rachel, he could get away with it. Still, she’d learned not to show mercy. A fist flew toward his gut, and he got pummeled. It took a while to calm her down. Their alone time meant bedtime ran a bit late.
* * *
”No night raid, then.”
Next morning, they packed up and left the fort early. Rosetta led, Klock right behind.
”Rachel. I told you to stay in the back.”
”Shut it. A master should show his disciple a cool back, right?”
Klock was on horseback for the first time in a while. His companion was, of course, Rachel. Despite what she’d said, she sent Kaitney to the baggage train and sat right in front of him on the horse. It was an extension of last night.
”Don’t be surprised if we fight today.”
”I know.”
She showed him the Fire Magic Stone she’d brought. He gave her a skeptical look. She seemed pumped, but that didn’t fill him with confidence. All she could do was Dragon Flame; aside from that, she was just a village girl from the sticks. Then again, he was just a bandit from some backwater town.
”No sign of the enemy nearby. Not that ‘early detection’ matters much anyway.”
”Yeah, if they just teleport in, it doesn’t mean a thing.”
There were traces of something moving on the ground. It was Kuzuha’s magic, working with them. Right behind her were Primlena and Flavia. Surrounded by Beastkin, they’d removed their hoods, showing finned ears and long, pointed ones.
Today, they put their main fighters at the front. Suzette, Ada, and Fit led the Human troops guarding the rear. They expected the enemy from front or back.
”They’re not in a line; they’re scattered. Good march formation—makes a teleport flank hard. If they force their way in, it’ll turn into a messy fight. Once that happens, they can’t escape. Problem is, fighting head-on isn’t safe either.”
”The ambush unit uses ‘Debilitating Toxin’. Using wind to spread it—that’s just nasty.”
Roldi’s poison magic. A single gust of poisoned wind from the front debuffed anyone who touched it. With teleportation, it was an unfair threat. In group combat, it was scarier than a Succubus or Vampire.
Though a Succubus should be just as dangerous. They only got lucky because Kispe focused on Cianie from the start. If the Hero hadn’t been there, the ‘Cursed Eye of Charm’ would’ve been rampaging at a higher level.
They continued north, on high alert. They’d approach the second fortress soon. Plan was to reach the third by day’s end, but that depended on trouble. Whatever the enemy’s goal, they were past the point where an attack should’ve come.
”Hey, Klock. Come to think of it, there’s something I need to tell you.”
”What?”
Kuzuha’s tone turned serious.
”About my stomach. I can still use magic, so I’m fine for now, but Rosetta has to move her body to fight. For the front lines… her belly’s starting to get heavy.”
”Ah…”
He glanced at Kuzuha’s stomach. It looked flat. Her figure was still stunning, like Primlena’s. Still, he’d wondered if it was okay for her to be so active while pregnant. Clearly not.
”Normally, a female stays in the nest to keep her belly warm the moment she knows she’s pregnant. Running around like that wild wolf is a big risk for a miscarriage. You need to understand she can’t stay on the battlefield for months like this.”
”Well… I guess you’re right.”
”Exactly. Consider our time limit for the battlefield to be at most a month. After that, you’ll manage without us. I hate her, but I can’t stand to watch her lose the baby. I’ll drag her home by force if I have to. The main force is coming anyway; you should be fine. We’ll wait for your return in the Beast Country with the children.”
Rachel looked back at him. Her gaze was like a glare—or maybe looking down on him. She probably hadn’t heard about their pregnancies. Based on what was just said, she was likely wondering if he was the father. He tried to look like it wasn’t his business, attempting to blend into the air.
”…!! I sense something.”
”No use,” she’d said, but Kuzuha kept running her arts, scouting constantly. She sensed something, and the air tightened.
”Fox Princess. Did you pick up something?”
”Goldfish Princess. I sense something that looks like an enemy ahead. Alone, standing in the middle of the plain. A massive amount of magic power.”
”Alone…?”
Roldi? Bandanzine? Or someone else? He couldn’t understand the intent of being alone, but—
”They’re coming. A horde of enemies is teleporting in. Kuzuha, scout the rear—see where they’re aiming. Primlena, Flavia, we’re moving to the front.”
They spurred their horses forward. The march ground to a halt. At the front, he saw Rosetta standing firm. He followed her gaze. About fifty meters ahead, on a small cliff, someone stood.
”Rosetta. What is that?”
”I don’t know. But likely a skilled enemy commander.”
Standing alone on the cliff, looking down at the army. Unless it was a scout, it was a target to watch. But from a distance, it didn’t look like Roldi.
”Leather armor, like an adventurer. Dressed for mobility—not a melee type. No sword. But I don’t see a bow either.”
”Sharp eyes.”
Rosetta signaled, and the march resumed. Standing still got them nowhere. They moved forward, waiting for the enemy to strike. Then, a light like magic power flickered ahead.
”Here it comes!”
It wasn’t a Magic Circle—it was an amorphous light. If it were teleportation via a circle, they’d see its shape, but this glowing blue band formed a strange, irregular rectangle. As the rectangle dissolved like mist, a row of cavalry appeared within it.
”Start the bombardment!”
The cavalry thrust their hands forward in unison. Flames appeared in their palms. Fireballs the size of heads formed and launched at the Beast Country troops all at once.
”They’re attacking! There’s a ton of them!”
”Over a thousand!”
The fireballs, shot like arrows, flew past Rosetta and him, slamming into the Beastkin behind.
But the Beastkin soldiers weren’t unarmed. They thrust their shields—large enough to hide their whole bodies—forward, bracing for the impact.
”Move out, you bastards! Charge!” Rosetta commanded, her voice ringing with absolute authority.
The soldiers, who’d braced for the sudden shelling, shouted back. They kicked off the earth, trampling grass, surging forward.
”Wind Blast (Rafika)”
Then it happened.
A figure leaped from among the cavalry, high into the air.
As they danced in the empty sky, they pointed their fingertips at the Beast Country army.
”Wraaaagh!!!!”
A wolf’s howl tore through the air.
Rosetta, who’d stayed still during the charge, didn’t miss the enemy’s move.
A gale blew through—a sudden wind so violent it would’ve snatched any hat off a head.
Yet for Klock and his companions, only the scent of wild weeds hit them; they didn’t stumble.
”The poison is an enchantment, as I thought,” Klock said, his tone neutral. “My fangs can dispel it fine.”
”Nice one, Rosetta!” a soldier cheered. “Truly the strongest warrior princess of the Beast Country Army!”
The enemy’s first blow was swatted away by Rosetta’s strength.
She severed the flow of magic power; the poison and flames fizzled to nothing.
The wind magic itself didn’t dissipate—it was a physical attack fueled by magic only at activation—but without the poison, it was just a breeze.
Seeing the surprise attack deflected, Klock drew his blade.
”Hm?”
”My Lord, stay back!” Flavia urged, clipped and formal.
Rosetta and Flavia had sensed something.
This was where the difference in raw ability showed.
Klock, understanding nothing, frowned as he watched their reactions.
”I won’t let you!”
Primlena’s spear deflected something into the distance.
As it clattered to the ground, he realized it was an arrow.
Then he saw arrows fired with terrifying speed from behind the enemy troop.
”Oi, oi, oi!” he shouted, voice rougher. “What the hell is this?”
It was an arrow-firing mechanism on a fixed platform.
The projectiles flew far faster than normal, descending on Klock and the soldiers.
”The one on the cliff is moving.”
”…!!”
Something danced in the sky.
A carriage of giant blades.
Riding the wind, spinning with lethal momentum, it surged toward Klock’s group, slicing the air.
”So that’s a windmill,” Klock said, voice steady.
”What the hell is this? Where’d a monster like that come from?” a soldier yelled, panic rising.
The absurdly large blade smashed into the troop’s heart, spinning all the while.
Soldiers were blown away.
What danced in the air were soldiers, severed limbs, sprays of blood.
The blade’s sheer weight pulverized the troop, block by block.
”Don’t falter! Keep pushing!” Rosetta barked.
Despite everything, Rosetta commanded the advance.
This was war. No time to stop, no time to think.
She urged them forward, refusing to let them be intimidated even by comrades’ final moments.
She sprinted ahead, and Klock’s group followed.
The enemy’s Magic Cavalry wheeled around, retreating.
Had they run? No.
Behind them, heavily armored infantry waited in tight rows.
”Damn it—can I get through that with my Cianie Knife?” Klock muttered, grinding his teeth.
A Jumping Slash was still just a slash. It shouldn’t cut through thick armor. If it could, weapons wouldn’t block it.
Rendered powerless before the enemy soldiers, Primlena and Flavia flanked Klock.
”I sense strong magic power,” Primlena said calmly.
”Again?”
”It doesn’t seem to be just one or two. Few in number, but the enemy has a group of seasoned experts.”
The sound of clashing steel rang out.
It was Rosetta, who’d charged ahead without waiting for infantry. Her claw attack was blocked.
Two floating blades hung in the air at both ends.
Double-blades were often dismissed as impractical, but these floated, blocking Rosetta’s strikes and moving on their own.
”Tch!”
A blade of earth surged toward Rosetta.
She dodged the spire rising from the ground with her usual physical ability, flipping back.
It wasn’t Roldi. It was another magic user.
The force pushed the Wolf Princess back.
”Looks like about ten Demonkin of general-class strength,” Klock analyzed. “This isn’t a simple raid—they’re here to grind us down.”
”Ten general-class enemies? How strong exactly?”
”Well… on par with Ada or Fit.”
In other words, ten A-rank adventurers stood before the group.
Such abundant talent. This was the Demonkin’s meritocracy.
Even a surprise attack force of only a thousand could field that raw power.
”Isn’t this bad?”
”Don’t panic. We won’t lose. But taking damage is unavoidable.”
Something passed over their heads again.
The momentary eclipse of the sun gave it away.
Looking back, that giant windmill had slammed into the troop again, wreaking havoc.
The guy on the cliff seemed to act as an entire archer troop alone.
Beastkin soldiers tried to dodge or shield, but were crushed under the blades.
”Oooooohhhh!”
”What the—!?”
Klock and his companions were too far forward for spectators.
A single heavily armored enemy soldier charged straight at Klock.
Maybe he was mistaken for a commander because he was on horseback.
The enemy lunged, the tip of a two-and-a-half-meter spear aimed at Klock.
”Guh!?”
His Cianie Knife was faster. But how do you cut through full-body armor?
Even as he realized his mistake, his horse couldn’t turn in time.
Just as the spear reached the edge of his vision,
”Burn!” Rachel shouted.
”Guh!?”
The ground exploded before their eyes.
The soldier went flying, a human torch.
The heavy armor conducted heat easily; the soldier rolled and writhed, consumed by flames.
”I used one magic stone! Four left!”
Rachel reported the information precisely.
Looking high-spirited and a bit smug, she glanced back at Klock.
”Nice, Rachel. Let me feel your boobs later.”
”I’ll punch you, you idiot.”
Thinking he should do it now, he gave them a squeeze.
He tried being an audacious idiot committing sexual harassment on the battlefield, but Rachel ignored him, keeping her eyes on the enemy.
Realizing he’d pushed his luck too far, he pulled back.
Flavia, having pulled her hood back up, clashed blades with the enemy controlling the double-blade. Rosetta dodged earth magic while kicking and sweeping through soldiers. Soldiers closed in to crush her, but were stopped and finished off by Primlena’s water bubbles.
Maybe as a surprise attack, it had failed.
But in combat results, it succeeded more than enough.
About thirty minutes into the engagement, the enemy suddenly began to fall back.
Rosetta snapped a heavy infantryman’s neck and shouted not to pursue.
Soon after, the enemy soldiers were engulfed in magic light, vanishing like mist.
The curtain closed on the battle.
* * *
Again, a belt of light formed a square, enclosing the soldiers.
What was that teleportation method? Were they moving in units of space?
”Hmm.”
Some time later, at the front of the Third Fort.
Several kilometers north of Star Fort. Having repelled the raid, the Beast Country army continued north and began building a base at their target. All forts on the way had been smashed and rendered unusable.
”Sixty-eight dead. One hundred ten seriously wounded,” Charlotte reported, voice professional and stiff. “Heavy losses for such a short battle.”
Inside the largest meeting tent, Rosetta crossed her arms and groaned at the report.
”So many deaths in thirty minutes. I miscalculated the enemy’s strength.”
”We were too focused on Roldi and the teleport, but the enemy has several strong individuals.”
Rosetta sighed, and Kuzuha shrugged.
There had been almost no casualties in the Beast Country’s civil war.
Were the Beastkin stunned by the Demonkin’s ferocity?
”Should I have sent Charlotte’s team out after all?”
”Hard to say. Keeping them for the final showdown has its own merit.”
There was an idea to deploy the Harpies as a flying troop, but they’d shelved it for now.
Rosetta decided she’d handle Roldi countermeasures.
There were only a few hundred Harpies.
Even if they used them for a surprise attack, they’d only get one shot.
So they kept Charlotte and the others in reserve for the coming decisive battle.
”The Fourth Fort is nearby. We could reach Orrid by tomorrow, but we have to decide how to proceed.”
”One more surprise attack, or maybe a night raid.”
Orrid was close.
But arriving tomorrow would be near evening.
If a battle broke out, it’d drag into the night.
”Let’s be on full alert tonight. I think there won’t be another surprise attack now that we’re this close,” Klock suggested.
”Their playbook is exposed. It won’t be hard to scatter them even if they organize another small force of a thousand,” Rosetta agreed. “They probably realize that. Likely they’re already building defenses and waiting for us.”
”Yeah. If Orrid hasn’t fallen, they need to fight without being pincered. The standard move is defense or retreat. For now, we should approach the Fourth Fort and watch them.”
Kuzuha and Flavia nodded.
Whenever Klock used words like “standard move,” he felt they’d do the opposite. Anxious, he joined the discussion.
”The guy throwing windmills—the ability is probably shrinking weapons.”
”The enemy has multiple magic users, and infantry in front cover their weaknesses.”
”Beastkin aren’t good with magic. Can’t overwhelm them with numbers and brute force.”
”It won’t be simple. No certain victory unless we coordinate with Orrid and pincer them. Someone needs to go ahead and contact the city.”
It was the eve of the decisive battle.
They talked until late.
Rachel and Kaitney, though not joining, helped by bringing food.
Suzette, Meina. Rosetta, Kuzuha, Charlotte. Ada and Fit, and Alice who poked her head in briefly. Finally, Gonmi showed up, claiming to drop off refreshments but clearly sent by Boit to scout.
At last, the final showdown with the Demonkin.
If they won, there was a chance the Third Great Human-Demon War would end.
Everyone was on edge.
He had Flavia and Primlena attend to him, but focused on resting.
* * *
He greeted the morning with little sleep, and the day arrived.
The enemy was also preparing for the decisive battle. That prediction wasn’t wrong.
But not everything went as they had expected.
The battlefield, by its nature, was an intersection of tens of thousands of human wills—making it hard to predict.
”You’ve got to be kidding me…”
Klock bolted upright at the report. He scrambled into his gear and climbed the abandoned fort’s ramparts. Looking down from the high vantage point, he clenched his teeth, brow furrowed.
The campsite before the Third Fort.
Four kilometers away on the flatlands, the Demonkin army was closing in. Tens of thousands.
”They came to us.”
”No time to fortify. We make our stand here.”
The enemy pulled back from Orrid and marched south to the Third Fort. A pincer attack was nearly impossible to coordinate. Meina could run to Orrid to synchronize, but removing their primary powerhouse was out of the question.
Initial estimates had the Demonkin at around fifty thousand. But the army moving south looked smaller. Maybe losses at Orrid, or reserves left north. Eyeball estimate: thirty to thirty-five thousand. They were slightly outnumbered. The outcome was anyone’s guess.
”Are they insane? They know how much damage they’ll take from a head-on collision.”
”If they plan to restart the assault on Orrid after this, they’d avoid a decisive battle. Unless they have some secret plan to crush us.”
Klock positioned his fragmented platoons like outstretched wings, putting himself in the elite troop at center. Confusion, tension, a flicker of adrenaline. But crushing anxiety lingered, brow permanently knit.
”I can feel it.”
”…Feel what?”
”Bandanzine. He’s here.”
At Primlena’s words, Klock took a deep breath. That woman he’d known. A warrior on par with Gildegant was right on the other side.
They stood off, mere kilometers apart. Neither army moved, each testing the other’s resolve.
Thirty minutes later, Klock found his nerves settling enough to check on his allies. Rosetta, Kuzuha, Primlena, Flavia nearby. Meina and Suzette present. Ada and Fit led the several hundred Humans in a separate unit.
”Dammit. I wanted a more advantageous fight.”
”We were outnumbered. Thinking we could stare them down to stop an attack on Orrid now feels like a fool’s errand. Once the situation turned, of course they’d strike.”
They had advantage in numbers, skill, training. They needed the tactical edge, and they’d failed to secure it. But the Demon Lord’s Army had been fighting at Orrid this whole time. Their soldiers should be exhausted, their gear worn. In contrast, the Beast Country army was fresh, morale high.
”Heyyy!”
”What—Rachel! I told you to stay back today—”
”Forget that. This old geezer spider told me to bring him here.”
Rachel and Kaitney sprinted to the front lines. In Kaitney’s hands was a large, hairy spider. Gross. Come to think of it, he’d gone missing at some point. It seemed Lizamis had asked Rachel to fetch him.
”Where the hell have you been?”
”My apologies, sire. I was caught up in a conversation with the Fairies, and you left me behind.”
”Fairies…?”
Klock’s body instinctively tightened at the mention.
”Sire. I hate to interrupt at such a critical moment, but the war is over.”
”…Huh? The war is over?”
”Indeed.”
Lizamis leaped onto Klock’s shoulder and raised a single leg. Clutched in that leg was a mass of silk. Depending on how you looked at it, it resembled a miniature bouquet made of thread.
”Kupira has arrived. We shall now conduct the wedding ceremony.”
”…Huh?”
—
Summary:
Klock and the Beast Country army arrive at the ruins of a destroyed Star Fort, which has been systematically dismantled by their enemies. After a brief encounter involving intimate moments and tactical planning with Rachel, the army continues their march north while maintaining high vigilance. They suddenly encounter a mysterious lone commander on a cliff who initiates a massive cavalry assault using teleportation and fire magic, forcing the army into immediate combat.
Klock prepares for a desperate defensive battle at the Third Fort against a massive Demonkin army. As both sides stand in a tense, kilometer-wide standoff, the arrival of Rachel, Kaitney, and the spider Lizamis shatters the atmosphere. The situation takes an absurd turn when Lizamis declares the war over and announces an impending wedding ceremony.
