Volume 1 Chapter 11 Equipment Problems and the Treatment of Slaves
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
I headed toward the Adventurer’s Guild, led by Mercedes. To state the obvious, this was the capital of the Maultasche Kingdom¹. The streets were bustling with all sorts of people, and as I’d expected, the place had a distinct “Medieval European” vibe. In reality, it was nothing like Earth’s Middle Ages. The hygiene was far superior, and there were plenty of non-human races. Beastmen were the most common after humans, but I also spotted Dragonewts, Birdmen, Dwarves, and even a few Elves.
As expected, Elves tend to be beauties. A girl who just passed us had a striking, refined face and waving blonde hair, though she looked quite young. (Total loli material…) Just as I thought, Makoto was staring her down, though even he didn’t go so far as to call out to her.
For now, we managed to borrow some spare gear from the Knights. Since we were summoned, our growth rate is about ten times that of a normal person. If we bought cheap equipment, we’d outgrow it in a heartbeat. This all comes down to the balance between Level, the monsters you’re hunting, and “Effect”² values. “Effect” is essentially the stat bonus added to your Ability score³-the gear’s performance rating.
To put it in perspective, a Slime-the weakest monster-has a max Ability score under 10. You can take one out bare-handed. Next up is the Horned Rabbit, with a max Ability of 75. The recommended level is 5, where an average person with a “C” Growth Rate would have an Ability score of 50. You’d barely win bare-handed, but you’ll be fine if you’re rocking wood or leather gear with an Effect value around 30. That covers the F-Rank monsters.
Then there’s the fantasy staple: the E-Rank Goblin. Their max Ability is 150. At the recommended level of 7, a C-Rank growth Ability is 100. Wooden gear won’t cut it here; you’d want bronze equipment with an Effect of about 50. For an ordinary civilian, that’s usually plenty. Once you hit D-Rank Wolves, the max Ability jumps to around 600. At level 17, a C-Rank growth reaches 390. By this point, even at the right level, a C-Rank growth can’t hold their own. Someone with a B-Rank growth (507 Ability) would finally be able to hold their ground, provided they have steel gear with an Effect of 100. Similarly, D-Rank Ants have a max Ability of about 900. At level 21, a C-Rank growth is 540, and B-Rank is 702. You’d need high-quality steel gear with an Effect of 200 to hunt them effectively.
A normal adventurer takes nearly two years to get this far, so they can just upgrade as they go. The problem for us is that we grow too fast. What takes others two years only takes us two months. We don’t have time to save up for new gear. Obviously, we could just wait until we have the money if we wanted to be safe, but that’s a massive waste of time. So, as a show of “good faith” from the kingdom that summoned us, they’re lending us the Knights’ gear. It’s the least they could do, really, but since we’re broke, it helps.
In this world, they use the “Hero Calendar”⁴. A year is 365 days, divided into 12 months. Each month is about 30 days, with 7-day weeks. It’s named after the “Heroes”-the reincarnated people who spread the system. The seven days are named after the Seven Pillar Gods: Red Day, Orange Day, and so on. The locals also use an older “Divine Calendar”⁵. That one has 49-day months (7 days x 7 weeks). Seven of those months make 343 days, which leaves them 22 days short of a year. They fill the gap with a “Surplus Month” or months named after the country. (For an Earthling used to the Gregorian calendar, it’s a total headache…)
As we walked, I noticed a fair number of people who looked like slaves. Judging by their clothes, they didn’t seem to be suffering from any horrific abuse. I decided to pick Mercedes’ brain about it.
”The slaves here seem better off than I expected,” I remarked.
”That is because the Founder, His Majesty, banned discrimination and abuse against slaves,” Mercedes replied.
”Is that so? He took down a Demon King and built a kingdom… he must have been a hell of a guy.”
”Indeed. I hear there was pushback from the nobility and the elite, but he used every trick in the book-negotiation, pressure, you name it-to eventually force them to agree.”
”He had high negotiation stats, too? Seriously impressive.”
”Supposedly, it was all because His Majesty was determined to marry a former slave.”
”Well, if that was the goal, I can see why he’d give it his all.”
Even legendary figures feel more human when you hear an episode you can actually relate to. As we chatted and made our way to the Guild, I realized something major: the women in this world are incredibly beautiful. Apparently, there are twice as many women as men here, and I’m genuinely thrilled about the high concentration of beauties. Even Mercedes walking beside me is a total knockout, strictly speaking in terms of looks.
”…What is with that look?” Mercedes asked.
”Oh, I was just thinking about how many beautiful women and cute girls there are around here,” I said.
”Right?! And aren’t you lucky to be guided by me-a pure, lovely, and adorable girl knight, overflowing with adult charm!”
”Yeah, sure. Wow. My cup runneth over,” I replied.
”There was zero heart in that! Say it again like you mean it!”
”Honestly, you’re such a waste of a pretty face,” I muttered.
”How could you say that!?” Mercedes cried.
She was a total letdown, but being able to shoot the breeze with a beautiful girl isn’t half bad. With that thought, we arrived at the Adventurer’s Guild.

Summary:
The protagonist and Mercedes walk through the capital toward the Adventurer’s Guild. Along the way, the protagonist explains the world’s RPG-like equipment system and the unusual calendar systems. They also discuss the country’s progressive slave laws, which were established by the founding king’s desire to marry a former slave.
—
Trivia:
- The growth rate of the summoned heroes is 10x faster than locals.
- The ‘Divine Calendar’ is 22 days shorter than a solar year, requiring leap months.
- Women outnumber men 2:1 in this world.
- The first king was essentially a ‘simp’ whose personal love drive reshaped national law.
- Maultasche is a real-world German pasta dish, suggesting a naming theme
—
Character Insight:
The protagonist shows a pragmatic, analytical mind regarding game mechanics but is easily distracted by the high quality of female NPCs. Mercedes is revealed to be vain and desperate for validation, contrasting with her role as a knight.
—
Behind the Scenes:
The author uses heavy exposition on math and stats to justify why the protagonist isn’t buying gear yet, a common trope to slow down power creep or manage character finances.

TL Notes:
Notes:
• Mercedes – She is a Guide Knight, recently recruited and currently the highest‑level among the youngsters, with brown semi‑long hair and thick chest armor. Energetic yet airheaded, she serves the Maultasche Kingdom as a beautiful girl knight, acting as a guide and chaperone for the summoned heroes and the protagonist’s party. Though described as having a “disappointing” personality, she presents a “pure and lovely” appearance and is self‑proclaimed pure and lovely beauty. As a member of the Knight Order, she is knowledgeable about the world’s mechanics and the guild system, and despite being prone to breaking equipment, she is a high‑level combatant and currently searching for a boyfriend.
• Makoto – He is a short, chubby man of the Blacksmith class, a formal summoned individual from Earth who speaks in a stiff, samurai‑like manner and uses the first‑person pronoun “sogashi”. As a member of the Salarymans party, he belongs to a production class yet possesses high STR and VIT, making him the party’s vanguard, and he aspires to become a master blacksmith, seeking apprenticeship under a master smith. He is a member of Reemans, enthusiastic about elves, and is noted for staring intensely at beautiful women, especially an elven girl in this chapter.
