Volume 1 Chapter 3
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The Goblin falls to the ground because of the poison.
’Base Point: 20pt’
That’s the 4th one.
I’ve got enough food and water for now.
But even if I go back to Base, there’s really nothing there. I’d rather not sleep on a hard floor, and I want a toilet too. But those are pretty expensive and I can’t afford them.
’Bed: 200pt’
’Toilet: 500pt’
A sleeping bag is only 20pt, so I guess I’ll have to use that for a while.
It’s important to set up a living space, but weapons are even more important.
If my Poison Knife breaks, I’ll need to buy a new one, and if a stronger Demonkind shows up, I’ll need better weapons.
I could save a bit by picking up Goblin weapons, but they’re not very good and I can’t really rely on them.
If I keep taking down Goblins one by one, it’ll take forever. But with my current equipment, I don’t feel ready to take on the stronger Demonkind. There are downsides to both choices.
Now, I found a big target that could give me 100pt, but it looks like a tough Demonkind.
’Man-Eating Tree. It has ten huge tentacles. Defeat Point: 100pt’
To my eyes, it just looked like a tree, but the Base system helped me notice it. It’s good to know that there are Demonkinds that can disguise themselves.
100pt is tempting, but if those ten tentacles attack, I probably won’t be able to handle it with just one knife. I should probably avoid going after it for now.
First, I’ll take down Goblins steadily and earn points little by little.
Honestly, 5pt feels a bit low, but I have an idea. I read the system’s explanation and thought there must be a Goblin Nest somewhere in this forest. If I can find it, earning points will be easier. There are probably my other classmates on the island too, so I can’t just leave the Nest alone.
It would be best to take it out before there are any victims.
”──.”
While I was thinking and looking for Goblins, I noticed some bushes nearby shaking strangely.
I quickly moved my knife, ready to strike.
”Wait. It’s me.”
A familiar girl stepped out from the bushes.
Kashiro Sentou.
She has long, beautiful black hair and a cool, sharp vibe. I don’t know her well, but we’re not on bad terms… I think.
Kashiro is known for being a lone wolf. With her good looks, she’s popular among the guys, but she always seems to be reading complicated books, which makes her seem unapproachable.
I’m relieved she’s not a Demonkind, but I’m not sure if I should be happy to see a classmate.
What worries me is that this island is currently a lawless place. If it’s just us, there’s no way laws can work, and with Demonkinds wandering around, it’s a life-or-death situation.
Even though she’s a classmate, I don’t know if she’s on my side.
Maybe it’s better to part ways with her.
As I fell silent, Kashiro spoke up.
”This is the first time I’ve seen a classmate since coming here. We’ve both had a rough time.”
If I believe her, she’s been acting alone. One-on-one is easier and helps me out.
”Yeah. I haven’t seen anyone else either. I’ve run into 5 Demonkinds though.”
”…Have you already fought them?”
Kashiro looks at my knife.
It’s stained with green Goblin blood, so she probably has an idea.
”Thanks to magic, I managed to win. You look unarmed though, are you okay?”
”Yeah, somehow.”
Kashiro and I lock eyes.
It’s not easy to explain about magic. It’s like our secret weapon right now. She must understand that too. From here on, it’ll be a bit of a guessing game.
I thought that, but…
”My magic is ‘Analysis Magic’. Right now, it’s not really a fighting ability.”
Kashiro quickly admitted it.
”Is it okay? You’re telling me so easily.”
”If we end up fighting, I know I can’t win. ‘Analysis Magic’ can tell you a lot, but it’s not really good for fighting.”
If she’s showing her hand, I guess I should relax a bit too. After all, we’re classmates. It’s better if we can work together.
”I don’t have any fighting Magic either. I have ‘Base Magic,’ which just lets me teleport to a safe place.”
”I know. And you also have ‘Eros Magic.’.”
My guard goes up.
But Kashiro doesn’t seem hostile.
”Is that the ability of ‘Analysis Magic’?”
”Yeah. I can find out what kind of Magic the other person has. If I see a Demonkind, I can instantly know their name and weaknesses. I can even tell edible mushrooms apart.”
I thought my ‘Base Magic’ was pretty good, but this ‘Analysis Magic’ seems strong too. It would be a pain to have an enemy like that. It’s tough when they know what you can do.
”So, Hyakudou, how about we make a deal?”
”…Depends on the deal.”
”I want you to protect me in exchange for my support with ‘Analysis Magic’. The Demonkind is dangerous, and not all classmates are friends, right? I have a few students in mind who might cause trouble.”
That’s not a bad deal.
I have no reason to refuse.
”Can you trust me since I have ‘Eros Magic’?”
”Having power and using it are 2 different things. You were close with your childhood friend, so I don’t think you’d do anything to make her sad.”
Wow. She’s paying more attention to me than I thought. I figured she was too busy reading to care about classmates.
”Okay, I’ll help. I’m planning to take down a Goblin Nest, so I need your help.”
”…Sorry, I’m already kind of regretting this. Why are you so aggressive?”
Ah. Since her goal is to survive, she probably doesn’t want to fight the Demonkind too much. We might not be on the same page.
”The more Demonkind I defeat, the stronger my Base Magic gets. If you come with me, you can’t avoid fighting.”
Kashiro looked a bit troubled but eventually sighed as if she gave up.
”Since we made a deal, I’ll confess… My ‘Analysis Magic’ can also learn how to use basic attack Magic. It’s called Flame Bullet, and it lets me shoot fireballs.”
That sounds pretty strong. She might actually be useful in a fight.
”That’s amazing. If you can do that, you might be stronger than me.”
”I have limits, though. I need magic power to use it, and right now I can only use it about 5 times a day. Just like your ‘Base Magic,’ my magic power increases every time we defeat a Demonkind, but I want to avoid taking risks just to grow my Magic.”
”Really? I think it’s better to get stronger. You never know what might happen next.”
It’s better to be strong than weak. Kashiro seems to understand that too, as she sighed in resignation.
”Okay. I can use ‘Analysis Magic’ to find the Nest. Let’s start by looking for Goblins.”
’Analysis Magic’ is really useful.
”Can you find out anything you want?”
”To some extent. If I see a Demonkind’s corpse, I can tell who killed it, and I can track directions. That’s how I was following you.”
”The more I hear, the scarier this Magic sounds. Was it really just a coincidence that we met?”
”But there are clear limits. ‘Analysis Magic’ only works if I can see the target. I can’t know the Magic of someone who isn’t here, and I can’t find the Nest without spotting a Goblin.”
So it’s not all-knowing. But it’s still a pretty strong ability.
”Also, ‘Analysis Magic’ only activates when I want to know something. It won’t automatically tell me if a Demonkind is hiding as a tree.”
If you don’t question things, you won’t get answers. My Base system told me things even when I didn’t notice, so it seems like the performance is a bit different.
”Then how did you find out about the Man-Eating Tree?”
”I got attacked. I managed to escape with a Flame Bullet, but now I can only use it 3 more times today. I had to use it twice just to get away.”
That’s too bad. If I had met Kashiro earlier, we might have been able to defeat the weakened Man-Eating Tree.
Wait, hold on.
Is it too late to do something now?
”Kashiro, do you remember where that Man-Eating Tree was?”
