Chapter 146 Kibakura Reiji’s Calm Day

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

In the records room located on the second floor of the Student Council dedicated building, a group of young men and women sat facing each other at an impromptu table formed by putting three folding long desks together.

 ”I’m Kibakura Reiji,” Kibakura said.

 ”I’m Fumioka Shirou,” Fumioka said.

The two men sitting side by side gave blunt introductions.

When lined up next to the giant Kibakura, Fumioka, who wore glasses, looked like a slender intellectual type.

Even so, his height was 176 centimeters, and his toned body was thoroughly trained and conditioned.

”I’m the girls’ kendo club captain, Kousaka Sumire,” Kousaka said.

”Likewise, I am the vice-captain, Toono Ai,” Toono said.

The female students sitting opposite glared at Kibakura and his companion with sharp, hostile eyes.

Sumire had a distinct short haircut and large, round eyes that perfectly matched her fierce, strong-willed appearance.

Ai was a semi-long-haired girl who, at first glance, looked gentle and mature.

Once the introductions were over, Amahara Karen, who sat in the seat of honor, spoke.

”This will be officially announced at tomorrow’s all-school assembly, but Kibakura-kun¹ will be appointed as the Public Order Class President, and Kousaka-kun will serve as the Vice Class President,” Amahara said.

Behind Amahara stood the treasurer Inami Hitomi and the Auditor Togamine Hatsune, standing guard like sentries.

Sumire and Ai continued to glare at Kibakura with eyes full of blatant animosity, but Kibakura remained completely unfazed, merely casting a casual, sideways glance at the two of them.

”You’re awfully tiny, but are you gonna be okay with this?” Kibakura asked. “In this line of work, the moment people look down on you, you’re finished.”

”Wh—?! You’re just way too damn huge!” Sumire snapped.

At Kibakura’s mocking words, Sumire leaned across the table and snapped back aggressively.

”Hahaha, that might be true,” Kibakura replied. “I can see you’ve got plenty of spirit. Well, let’s try to get along, little lady.”

 ”Why, you…!” Sumire yelled.

Sumire stood up, clutching her wooden sword in one hand with a look in her eyes that screamed she was ready to murder him on the spot. Seeing this, Inami Hitomi hurriedly held out her hands to restrain her.

”Kousaka-senpai, please, let’s keep things civil!” Inami said. “Kibakura-senpai, you too—please stop baiting her!”

”Hey, I didn’t mean anything by it…” Kibakura said.

Kibakura scratched his cheek with his finger, a sheepish, troubled expression crossing his face.

”For the time being, we expect the public order committee to have a maximum of 22 members,” Amahara said. “I would like both Kibakura-kun and Kousaka-kun to select up to ten members each for your respective teams, though there is no need to rush. The student council will also recommend candidates from time to time, so please interview them and make your decisions as we go. While a certain amount of overlap is unavoidable, Kibakura-kun, please refrain from packing the committee entirely with former Demiurge executives.”

As Amahara said this, she cast a brief, meaningful glance toward Fumioka.

”About that,” Kibakura said. “First off, I’m planning to bring Fumioka here on board, along with Doi Sojiro.”

 ”Wh—?!” Sumire yelled.

At Kibakura’s casual announcement, Sumire and Ai widened their eyes in sheer disbelief. Instantly, Togamine chimed in, her voice sharp with condemnation.

”Did you even listen to a single word Amahara-senpai just said?!” Togamine demanded. “Of all the people in this school, you want to bring in Doi Sojiro?! He is the absolute last person who belongs on a committee meant to protect the peace of this Academy!”

”If we’re talking about who belongs here, aren’t I the most untrustworthy guy in the room?” Kibakura countered. “Besides, thanks to a certain someone’s actions, Doi’s turned into a total shut-in. Since I was the one who dismantled Demiurge, it’s on me to look after him. I figured dragging him out here would be good rehabilitation to get him back into society.”

 ”Ugh…!” Togamine groaned.

Togamine choked on her words, utterly silenced by Kibakura’s mocking, pointed gaze.

”Hmm. A truly magnificent display of friendship. I approve,” Amahara said.

 ”Amahara-senpai?!” Togamine cried.

Amahara crossed her arms, nodding in deep, impressed agreement.

”Next, I’m thinking of dragging Moriya into this as well,” Kibakura said.

”Are you out of your mind?! There is absolutely no way we can allow that!!” Togamine shouted.

Togamine roared, her face completely distorted with righteous fury.

Moriya was the man widely known as Demiurge’s number two, second only to Kibakura himself.

Sumire and Ai were also staring at Kibakura with pure, unadulterated rage, which was entirely justified.

”Admittedly, bringing Moriya-kun into the fold might make the committee look a bit too heavily stained by Demiurge’s colors,” Amahara noted. “Kibakura-kun, what exactly is your rationale for recommending him to the public order committee?”

”That idiot Moriya is currently trying to round up the remnants of the disbanded Demiurge to start up a brand-new organization,” Kibakura said.

”What did you say?!” Togamine shouted.

At Kibakura’s revelation, Togamine raised her voice in a high-pitched shriek.

”He claims he wants to keep a place ready for me whenever I decide to make a comeback,” Kibakura explained. “I told the dumbass to drop it because I have zero intention of going back, but he won’t listen to a damn word I say. Moriya is a simple-minded meathead; there’s no way he can keep that many volatile guys in check on his own. And it looks like Shiraishi and Kiyotaka have absolutely no interest in serving under him anyway.”

Fumioka picked up the explanation from there.

”If a malicious strategist were to whisper in his ear and take advantage of him, Moriya could easily end up as a dangerous puppet leader,” Fumioka said. “Currently, the biggest concern for the Academy’s public order is Moriya.”

”Which means it’s much faster and easier to drag that bastard over to our side,” Kibakura said. “If we handle him right, he’ll be incredibly useful. He’s got a terrifying face, so a single glare from him will be enough to keep most troublemakers perfectly compliant. It aligns perfectly with Amahara’s policy of ‘refraining from using force as much as possible.’”

”I’m not falling for this!” Togamine yelled. “You’re just trying to use the public order committee as a tool to resurrect Demiurge and seize control of the Academy all over again!”

Sumire and Ai nodded aggressively, fully backing Togamine’s fierce accusation.

”I see. You have genuinely given profound thought to the long-term peace and stability of the Academy,” Amahara mused. “Your sense of responsibility and strategic judgment are truly exemplary, Kibakura-kun. I approve.”

 ”Amahara-senpai?!” Togamine cried.

Amahara was pinching her chin between her thumb and forefinger, nodding frequently in deep approval.

”This is bad! These guys cannot be trusted!” Togamine yelled.

”Hatsune, you worry far too much,” Amahara said. “Kibakura-kun is the type of man who sees things through to the end once he accepts a commitment. Let us judge them based on their results.”

”By the time we see the results, it’ll be too late!” Togamine shouted.

Togamine glared at Inami Hitomi as if to say ‘lend me backup!’, but Inami Hitomi hurriedly averted her eyes.

As for Inami Hitomi, she could not trust Kibakura nearly as much as Amahara did, but even so, she wondered about being as full of distrust and blatant hostility as Togamine.

Both of them were simply too extreme in their views.

She had things she wanted to say, but she absolutely refused to get dragged into a screaming match between such intensely stubborn personalities.

Ultimately, she decided to take a cautious, wait-and-see approach, which functionally aligned her with Amahara’s decision.

”Then it’s settled,” Kibakura said. “I’ll track down Moriya and straighten things out with him before the day is over.”

”Understood,” Amahara said. “The Student Freedom Alliance representatives meeting begins at 13:30, so please make sure you don’t forget to attend, Kibakura-kun.”

”I… na… mi… You better sleep with one eye open…!” Togamine hissed.

 (Ah… That’s exactly why I didn’t want to come here today…)

Inami Hitomi turned her eyes away from Togamine, who was spitting out words of a curse, and regretted coming to this place while looking at the majestic mountain range outside the window.

Originally, Vice President Sogahara was supposed to be here, but under the pretext of sending his favorite sword to the special zone for repairs, he had been appointed as a substitute with a light attitude.

She had tried her absolute best to resist, but as his junior, Inami Hitomi simply couldn’t find a way to flatly refuse her senior’s cheerful request.

”We’re going to keep a razor-sharp eye on you people to make sure you don’t pull any funny business,” Sumire barked.

”Yes! Kousaka-senpai, please do!” Togamine pleaded.

”Look, I don’t give a damn if you hang around, but please spare me the company when I’m trying to use the restroom,” Kibakura drawled.

”Don’t give me that crap! Go die!” Sumire shouted.

”You are the absolute lowest! You perverted freak!” Ai yelled.

(Is this committee seriously going to be okay…)

Staring blankly out at the distant scenery with an expression of profound, bone-deep exhaustion, Inami Hitomi let out a long, heavy sigh.

* * *

”I honestly thought the whole business with Moriya would cause a much bigger scene, but it went through without a hitch,” Fumioka said.

Fumioka, who left the Student Council dedicated building side by side with Kibakura, spoke to Kibakura.

”Yeah. It worked out in our favor this time, but that’s exactly what makes Amahara so dangerous,” Kibakura said. “She trusts people too much.”

”Amahara’s personal influence profile is undeniably massive, but even so, she occupies the exact same standing as you—just one representative among equals,” Fumioka reasoned. “The system itself isn’t bad. The real hurdle is going to be overcoming the sluggish bureaucracy inherent to a council-style government.”

”Hph… If I remember right, the one pulling the strings behind the scenes was that Higurashi woman from the Tsuchimiya faction,” Kibakura said. “If she managed to calculate everything out this far when she established the Student Freedom Alliance, then she is an absolute monster of a tactician. To get this Academy unified as quickly as possible, both us and the Student Council might have been dancing to her tune from the very beginning.”

”No way,” Fumioka replied. “That’s likely just hindsight talking. More importantly, I’m going to track down Moriya right now and lock down a meeting with him for tonight. What are you going to do, Kibakura?”

”Me? I think I’ll wander around the campus for a bit,” Kibakura said. “See if I can scout out a few more scary-faced thugs to recruit while I’m at it.”

”…You’re actually taking this job seriously, aren’t you?” Fumioka asked.

”Look, I walked into this fully prepared to be thrown into a dark dungeon,” Kibakura said. “When they hand me a job on a silver platter with treatment this incredibly soft, I’d look like a total pathetic loser if I couldn’t even pull it off properly.”

”Fair enough,” Fumioka said. “Just make sure you cap it at one or two more people. Counting us, there are already four former Demiurge leaders and executives on the roster. The backlash is already going to be severe, so it’s probably best to leave the remaining half of the slots open for the students their side recommends.”

”Yeah, that makes sense,” Kibakura said. “Got it. I’ll make sure to bring back some real lively ones.”

Saying so, Kibakura parted ways with Fumioka, who headed back toward the main school building, and turned his steps toward the open schoolyard.

Passing between the C-wing school building and the Student Council dedicated building, a completely deserted courtyard stretched out before his eyes with not a single soul in sight.

It was currently the middle of the third period, and under normal circumstances, regular students rarely had any reason to wander out as far as the isolated C-wing.

The sky above was a brilliant, cloudless blue, and a wonderfully crisp, refreshing breeze swept across the grass.

Kibakura paused in his tracks, staring up at the H-shaped rugby goalposts, standing there in silence for a long moment.

Suddenly, he realized that this was the absolute first time since coming to this alternate world that he felt genuinely at peace.

It was clear as day now that the mysterious card embedded inside him had been warping and poisoning his own mind all this time.

He had completely given up on his own life, accepting that his existence as a human being was effectively over, yet somehow he had managed to make it back to this place.

He had actually been granted a genuine second chance to redo his life.

”I’ve caused a hell of a lot of trouble for people… I’m gonna have to pay that debt back tenfold. And besides that…” Kibakura muttered.

Kibakura clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles turned white, glaring fiercely up at the open sky.

(That absolute bitch who set me up… I am going to return that favor ten times over.)

He swore a silent, burning vow of vengeance against Kujinami Sekira, the woman who had forcefully implanted that cursed card into his flesh.

And when he brought his gaze back down to earth, he noticed a person walking toward him from the direction of the student dormitories.

”Is that… Vice President Sogahara?” Kibakura muttered.

Walking with a perfectly serene, graceful expression, a silver-white sheath bag slung casually in one hand, the exceptionally handsome blond man approaching him was none other than Sogahara Takashi himself.

His memories regarding the first half of yesterday’s chaotic events were still incredibly hazy and fragmented, but he vaguely remembered the distinct sensation of sending the Vice President flying with everything he had.

 ”Hello there, Kibakura-kun,” Sogahara said.

Vice President Sogahara called out in a refreshing voice.

Showing concern would conversely be rude to a guy like him.

Kibakura decided not to care particularly.

”Yo. You seem to be in a damn spectacular mood,” Kibakura said.

”Oh, do I?” Sogahara asked. “Is Kibakura-kun in a bad mood, then? Did something unpleasant happen during your little public order committee meet-and-greet?”

”Nah, not really,” Kibakura said. “I just happened to remember a profoundly irritating woman, that’s all. As for the committee… well, it was peaceful enough. Amahara let me get away with a few unreasonable demands, so once I recruit one more heavy hitter with a scary face, I’m planning to leave the rest of the slots open for whatever candidates your side wants to recommend.”

”That is an immense help,” Sogahara² said. “Togamine-kun has been incredibly high-strung lately, you see. Also, in the near future, I’d like to sit down with you sometime soon to hear the exact details of how you came to have that Sacred Artifact Card³ embedded inside you. I have a strong feeling a woman by the name of Kujinami Sekira is directly involved in this, though.”

”You know that woman?!” Kibakura shouted.

Kibakura, who never expected to hear that name from Vice President Sogahara’s mouth, opened his eyes wide in absolute, stunned shock.

”I was hearing the story from Tsuchimiya-kun and Asagiri-kun. So Kibakura-kun is in the same boat after all. It seems Asagiri-kun also had one of those cards embedded in her.”

 ”What?! So, is Asagiri okay?!”

”Yes. It seems Tsuchimiya-kun successfully removed the card from Asagiri-kun.”

 ”I see…”

Indeed, if he thought about it carefully, it wouldn’t be strange for there to be other students besides himself who had been implanted with a card.

Kibakura placed his hand against his own chest, where the Sacred Artifact Card used to nest.

(I’ve gone and ended up owing that bastard Tsuchimiya too. Besides, that spear… did he call it the Kondou Spear?)

Kibakura suddenly remembered the illusion of his classmate that he had seen during the night he spent in the dungeon.

In homeroom the day after the First Dive, their teacher had informed them that Kondou Isaki was dead.

”Well then, I’m heading out now. Don’t forget the representative meeting this afternoon.”

 ”Yeah. Got it.”

Once Vice President Sogahara walked away, Kibakura started strolling along at a leisurely pace.

(First, I guess I’ll go check out the usual spot…)

And right there, behind the gymnasium where he was heading, the usual crowd was hanging out.

 ”Oh, that guy is definitely…”

Among the five guys gathered in a circle by the wall and talking, a couple of them were smoking cigarettes.

There was no law forbidding it in this world, but the Discipline Committee was supposed to have issued a notice strictly banning smoking on school grounds.

A breakdown in discipline leads to a breakdown in public order.

As the Public Order Class President, it was his duty to step in and give them a warning.

”Hey, you bastards. Smoking inside the Academy is prohibited.”

 ”Ki-Kibakura?!”

As Kibakura approached while calling out to them, the men turned around in a panic.

One of them stepped forward with both hands shoved deep into his pockets.

He was tall, muscular, and exceptionally well-toned.

His hair was cropped into a razor-thin buzz cut, and for some reason, he was hiding one of his eyes behind the handguard of a sword used as an eyepatch.

”Yo, Kibakuraaa. We were just talking about you. Hey, I heard you got dropped back down to Level 1?”

”It’s Kibakura-san. Or Kibakura-senpai to you, Yamazaki. That’s exactly right, but you got a problem with it?”

When Kibakura casually confirmed it, Yamazaki’s tense face distorted into a smug smirk.

The fact that Kibakura had been reset to Level 1 had already been made public yesterday during the emergency meeting for the Demiurge.

”Hehe… then you and me are having a showdown right here, right now. You wouldn’t think of running away, would you, Kibakura-san?”

Saying this, Yamazaki ripped off his blazer and threw it aside.

”Yeah, fine by me. Come at me.”

Yamazaki was a member of the martial arts faction who had constantly competed against Kibakura without ever sucking up to him since their time back in Japan, making him a man Kibakura actually respected.

He had recently received a report that Yamazaki joined the Demiurge, but that was likely just a setup to get close enough to find the right timing to take Kibakura down.

”You guys, record this. When I win, he’s going to do a full Dogeza and grovel to me in front of the entire student body.”

”Sure, I don’t give a damn. But in exchange, when I win, you’re going to do exactly what I tell you to do.”

As Yamazaki approached with his face twitching in anticipation, Kibakura didn’t even bother taking a stance, remaining completely defenseless.

”It’s for your own good to stop bluffing. You do understand the massive gap between an Evold and a Level 1, right? By the way, my class is Heavy Armorer. Against my +2 protective barrier, a punch from a Level 1 scrub like you ain’t worth a damn.”

Yamazaki thrust his left hand forward, aggressively grabbing the unmoving Kibakura by his lapels.

”What, are you shaking?! It’s too late to apologize now! Even a Level 1 has at least some kind of basic protective barrier, right?! You better pray to God you don’t die!”

Yamazaki drew back his right fist and swung it with every ounce of his strength, unleashing a heavy, dull impact.

 ”Huh?”

Yamazaki froze in utter confusion, the impact feeling as though he had slammed his knuckles into solid, hardened rubber.

His fist remained pressed flat against Kibakura’s cheek, completely unable to push it back even a single millimeter.

Kibakura’s massive left hand suddenly clamped down on Yamazaki’s left wrist—the one still clutching his lapel—as his fierce eyes glared straight down into Yamazaki’s soul.

”That actually stung a bit more than I expected. Not bad, Yamazaki.”

Whether he had cut the inside of his mouth or not, a thin line of crimson blood leaked from the corner of Kibakura’s grinning lips.

”Wha-?! Yo-You bastard! Was the whole Level 1 thing a lie?!”

”It’s no lie. I definitely got weakened, but my current class modifiers give me a +5 to both strength and my protective barrier.”

 ”+5?!”

”Plus, my ‘Brute Strength’ passive skill adds another +3, so I guess my overall strength sits at a +8.”

”L-Liar! I’ve never heard of such a goddamn ridiculous stat modifier in my life!”

Yamazaki frantically tried to wrench his arm free, but the hand clamping down on his wrist refused to budge even a fraction of an inch.

”Whether it’s a lie or not is for you to find out.”

Kibakura’s right hand shot out, seizing Yamazaki by the collar.

With a single fluid motion, Yamazaki’s entire body was hoisted into the air, his toes leaving the dirt completely.

Whipping him around with the raw leverage of his single right arm as if yanking a weed from the earth, Kibakura violently slammed him face-first into the ground.

 ”Gahhh…!!”

 ””Yamazaki!!””

As Yamazaki went entirely limp from the devastating impact, his surrounding lackeys turned utterly pale.

”Don’t sweat it. This guy’s got a protective barrier too, so a little drop like this shouldn’t… huh?”

Yamazaki’s eyes had rolled completely back into his head, his tongue hanging sloppily out of his mouth as his body lay entirely motionless.

”…Oh, crap. Did I kill him?”

 ”Uwaaaaaah!!”

 ”Yamazaki!!”

Right at that moment, Yamazaki’s body gave a violent twitch, convulsing as he began to hack and cough frantically for air.

”Oh, look at that, he’s fine. As appreciated of Yamazaki.”

Kibakura, who had actually been panicking internally, breathed a sigh of relief and patted his chest.

”Hmm? Come to think of it, wasn’t I supposed to be refraining from using physical force as much as humanly possible? …Well, my official appointment doesn’t technically start until tomorrow, so this one doesn’t count.”

Having rationalized the situation completely to his own benefit, Kibakura turned around to look at the remaining lackeys, who were standing back while holding up their smartphones.

 ”Hie…!”

The men gasped, backing away with bloodless faces.

”As promised, I’m taking custody of this guy. I’ll let the smoking slide since I haven’t officially taken office yet. But starting tomorrow, I am the absolute Public Order Class President of this Academy. If any of you pull any of this disrespectful crap again, I will personally blow you away. If you understand, get the hell out of here right now!”

 …”Y-Yes, sir!”

 ”Hey! W-We’re leaving! Move it!”

The lackeys scattered in a panic, fleeing back toward the school building.

Kibakura watched them go until their figures vanished from sight, then turned back to look down at Yamazaki.

Just then, a massive, incredibly dignified black cat came sauntering out with a heavy swagger.

The black cat slowly crossed right in front of Kibakura, deliberately stepping heavily on top of Yamazaki’s unconscious body as it passed.

”Yo, Gonta. Have you been doing good?”

When Kibakura called out, the black cat merely gave him a cold, brief glance out of the corner of its eye and kept on walking.

Without ever looking back, it let out a low, gravelly “Nrrr~” and vanished into the rustling bushes.

 ”Cold as always, huh.”

Kibakura let out a dry chuckle.

Wiping the blood from his mouth with the back of his hand, he firmly grabbed Yamazaki by the back of his inner collar and started walking.

He headed toward the school building, casually dragging Yamazaki behind him along the dirt with a single hand.

”God, it’s so peaceful, damn it… well, I guess this kind of life isn’t half bad. Maybe I’ll actually behave myself for a while.”

Kibakura murmured softly in a quiet, serene voice.

 —

 Summary:

Moving past the intense fallout of the school’s faction wars, Kibakura stands confirmed as the head of a new public order assembly inside the records building. His sudden confrontation with a peaceful environment forces an internal shift regarding his altered state of consciousness. This peaceful realization shatters instantly when Vice President Sogahara arrives with a specific named reference that hints at a larger setup

Kibakura discusses mysterious embedded cards with the Vice President before encountering delinquents smoking behind the school gym. He easily dismantles the aggressive Heavy Armorer Yamazaki despite his Level 1 status by displaying hidden stat modifiers. He walks away casually dragging his defeated opponent across the courtyard while encountering a stray black cat named Gonta

• Kondou Isaki – Quiet, plain Class B boy once sitting behind Kibakura, chatty yet distant. A small, glasses-wearing “mob student” now shrunken with exhaustion and guilt after losing power and failing to save classmates like Mitsuba (Saiki K)** but with heavy exhaustion.

• Yamazaki – A tall, muscular, and exceptionally well-toned member of the martial arts faction with hair cropped into a razor-thin buzz cut, who hides one of his eyes behind the handguard of a sword used as an eyepatch and possesses the Heavy Armorer class with a +2 protective barrier.

• Gonta – A massive, incredibly dignified black cat who wanders around the campus grounds behind the gymnasium.
