Chapter 94 Coming and Going

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

March arrived, and Emilia graduated from high school. She held a farewell party with her classmates, Saki-chan and Asami-chan, to cherish their final moments together. Ten days later, she relocated to Kyoto¹ with her mother.

Since Mayu had contacted me to say a room had opened up, I reached out to Yoshimi-san, and she arrived two days later with Yuina-chan. When we stopped by the Watanabe Law Office² to offer our greetings, Watanabe-sensei told us that if a guarantor was required, he would be happy to act as one.

We headed straight from there to the real estate agent to view the rental apartment. I contacted Mayu beforehand; she was out but mentioned she was currently on her way back. The moment Yuina-chan saw the room, she took an immediate liking to it, and we moved forward with the contract. During the process, a message came from Mayu saying she was back, so I went to fetch her and introduced her to Yoshimi-san and Yuina-chan.

”This is my university friend, Fujita Mayu-san, the one who told me about this room. And this is the person I mentioned before, Tanaka Yoshimi-san, and her daughter, Yuina-chan,” I said.

”Hiro-chan is always taking such good care of us. On top of that, thank you so much for introducing us to this apartment. I expect Yuina will be in your care as well, so I look forward to working with you,” Yoshimi-san said.

”So, you’ve decided on this place?” Mayu asked.

”Since Yuina liked it, it was an immediate decision. Yuina, where are your manners?” Yoshimi-san prompted.

”I’m Tanaka Yuina. Fujita-san, I look forward to getting to know you,” Yuina-chan said.

”The pleasure is mine. Also, you can just call me Mayu. Is it okay if I call you Yuina-chan too?” Mayu asked.

”Mayu-san, that’s perfectly fine. This is my first time living here, so please teach me the ropes,” Yuina-chan replied.

Once the introductions were finished, we returned to the real estate office to draft the contract. As expected, a guarantor was necessary. It was settled that I would have Watanabe-sensei sign the documents and bring them back at a later date.

”Since there’s a screening process, it would make the procedure smoother if you could let us know who the guarantor is in advance,” the agent said.

 ”It’s the lawyer, Watanabe Junichi-sensei,” I replied.

”Watanabe-sensei? In that case, I’m actually scheduled to meet with him tomorrow, so I’ll handle the arrangements on my end,” the agent said.

”Do you know Watanabe-sensei?” I asked.

”We were in the same year at university,” the agent replied.

”Then you’re my senior,” I noted.

”Is that so? I’ll move things along so you can move in as soon as possible,” the agent said.

Upon leaving the office, I immediately contacted Watanabe-sensei. “Was the real estate agent at Yamase’s place? In that case, I’ll make them give you a discount or throw in some options,” he said.

I wondered if it was really okay for a lawyer to be throwing his weight around like that, but since Sensei had said it, I had no choice but to leave it in his hands.

On the day of my Home Tutor³ session after the term-end exam results were released, Kotoha-chan was all smiles. I could pretty much guess the outcome from the look on her face.

”Hirokazu, look at this! Kotoha worked really hard, didn’t she?” Kotoha-chan said.

Checking her report card for the third-term finals, I saw she was ranked 18th. I found myself thinking I should have set the goal at 15th after all, but it was a bit late for regrets now.

”Hirokazu, give me my reward!” Kotoha-chan chirped.

Kotoha-chan closed her eyes and tilted her face up, waiting for a kiss. However, remembering that we hadn’t actually specified where the kiss would be, I kissed her on the cheek.

 ”That’s not it!” she cried.

Kotoha-chan puffed out her cheeks in a pout, but her face was still quite cute.

”We decided on a kiss, but we never said where it would be, did we?” I asked.

”When you say kiss, obviously it’s right here!” she said, pointing to her lips.

I Googled it on my smartphone to show her. “‘The act of pressing one’s lips against another person’s cheek, lips, hand, etc…’ See, it’s written right here. So even on the cheek, it counts as a kiss,” I said.

”Mmm… that’s just a total sophistry!” she groaned.

”Are you saying the internet is lying?” I asked.

”Geez… this is why I hate you, Hirokazu!” she cried.

”In that case, maybe I should quit being your tutor,” I suggested.

”I don’t want that!” she protested.

”Well, you wouldn’t want to be taught by someone you hate, right?” I teased.

”Gosh… I love Hirokazu, so please don’t quit!” she exclaimed.

”Shall we get started with the studying then?” I asked.

I’d heard from Watanabe-sensei’s wife that she had been coddled, but isn’t she being a bit too childish for someone who’s about to be a high school sophomore? It might be for the best to start being a bit stricter with her. Come to think of it, she mentioned that Takakura-sensei from the cram school was strict; if she finds that level difficult, I might need to rethink my approach. If she ends up hating me for it, so be it. It might be a good idea to consult Manami about this.

On March 21st, Yuina-chan moved in. The previous day, after seeing off her overnight guests, she came here, picked up her keycard, and stayed at a hotel. I brought Manami along to help with the move. Mayu came to help as well. While clothes were transported by car, the appliances and furniture had been purchased new online and were scheduled for delivery that morning, making for a hectic start to the day. As for daily necessities and household goods, we made the rounds at nearby drugstores and home centers to get everything squared away.

Since it was time for my tutoring session, I had to head out midway through. Manami stayed to help until the very end and came home after being treated to dinner. From what I heard from Yoshimi-san, the following day, Mayu took Yuina-chan around the apartment to introduce her to some other girls Mayu is friendly with. Yoshimi-san had been anxious about Yuina-chan starting her life alone, but it seems she’s finally at ease. Furthermore, I heard that when Takahashi-san came to visit Mayu’s place, she was introduced to Yuina-chan as well.

 Summary:

Emilia departs for Kyoto, while Yuina moves in to start her university life. Hirokazu leverages his connections with Watanabe-sensei and a local agent to secure Yuina’s apartment smoothly. Kotoha celebrates a successful exam result with a playful reward dispute that leaves Hirokazu questioning her maturity. The community comes together to help Yuina settle in, alleviating her mother’s worries.

 Character Insight:

Hirokazu shows a deepening sense of responsibility as a ‘middleman’ for his social circle, yet he struggles with the boundary between being a kind mentor and a strict tutor for Kotoha. Kotoha’s ‘kiss’ demand highlights her blatant affection and youthful naivety, contrasting with Hirokazu’s analytical and somewhat pedantic nature. The ease with which Hirokazu navigates the real estate deal through ‘Watanabe-sensei’s power’ suggests he is becoming increasingly comfortable using his adult connections for the benefit of those he cares about.

 Behind the Scene:

The ‘moving season’ in March is a significant cultural event in Japan, marking the end of the academic and fiscal year. The interaction between the real estate agent and Watanabe-sensei showcases the ‘Gakubatsu’ (academic clique) system, where university ties often lead to professional favors.
