Chapter 211 The Special Training Concludes and the Phoenix
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
After Rias and her group departed, the five women looked at one another. The silence hung heavy and strange in the air for a moment, until Amano Yuuma finally broke the tension.
”It’s been exactly five days,” Raynare said with a casual shrug. “How about we take one day each?”
Himejima Akeno gave a subtle, polite nod. “That works.”
Mittelt and the others raised no objections. As for Aki himself, his personal preference wasn’t even a consideration. When he opened his mouth to protest, the white-haired loli sitting on his lap shifted her weight, effectively silencing him.
Five days later, the intensive training came to an official close.
Aki’s group packed up their things, finally bidding farewell to the mountain villa that had been their home for the past month. The results of the training were staggering: both Aki and Rias had firmly cemented their footing in the middle ranks of the SS-Class. Himejima Akeno and the other four had all managed a full breakthrough to S-Class. Even the blonde little nun, who had only recently been reincarnated, had successfully jumped from a low-level devil to an A-Class middle-level devil.
The only one who hadn’t seen significant progress was Yuuto. Due to the unique nature of her condition, neither Aki nor Rias could offer much assistance.
A whole month…
She had worked tirelessly, pushing herself beyond her limits, but a qualitative change remained out of reach. She was still stuck at A-Class. On the way back, even though she tried to hide it, the disappointment was etched plainly on her face.
Aki and Rias exchanged a glance and gave each other a silent, solemn nod.
Yuuto’s physical issues had to be addressed immediately. If they waited any longer, even Asia would overtake her. No matter how resilient someone’s mindset might be, seeing their companions one by one surpass them—and leave them far in the dust—was a recipe for a breakdown. Beyond just the power gap, the physical strain was a real, pressing concern. If Rias hadn’t been holding her back, that little blonde nun probably would’ve already crawled into Aki’s bed to try a more “efficient” method of cultivation.
But no matter how much Rias tried to keep a lid on things, the dam was bound to break soon. When that day came, Yuuto would be the only one left on the outside of the Occult Research Club (ORC). If Rias and the others eventually gave in to Aki and decided on a “group activity” to deepen their bonds, Yuuto wouldn’t even be qualified to participate.
Back at Kuoh Academy, outside the ORC clubroom, a crow suddenly took flight.
Aki frowned, his gaze tracking the noisy bird. That ominous premonition he’d felt before the training came surging back. He didn’t dwell on the bird as it vanished into the sky; they had been gone for a month, and the clubroom needed a deep clean. The villa required some tidying, too. Only Rias, the white-haired loli, and Aki had made the trip. Rias had official business to tend to, and the loli was simply being clingy.
”Lord Riser, the Gremory heiress has returned,” a devil reported in the Underworld, having tracked Rias via her familiar.
”Tch. Finally showed up, has she?” Riser downed his glass of red wine, his expression twisted with annoyance. “She’s wasted a whole week of my time. Tell my brother to call off the contact with Lord Sirzechs.”
”Understood.”
”Well, now that she’s back, I might as well go pay her a visit.” Riser swept a hand through his yellow-haired punk hairstyle, flashing a smirk, and teleported directly to the Occult Research Club.
At the same time, Aki and the girls had just finished cleaning the clubroom and were settling down for a bite to eat when they felt a sudden, oppressive heat. A magnificent orange flame erupted before them, accompanied by a piercing bird cry. A gaudy magic circle manifested in the heart of the fire.
When the flames cleared, a tall, yellow-haired punk in a crimson suit stood in the center of the clubroom.
The moment Rias saw him, her soft, smiling expression turned ice-cold.
”Phoenix…”
At the sound of her murmur, Aki immediately registered who this uninvited guest was. Riser Phoenix, third son of the Four Great Devil families, and Rias’s nominal fiancé.
The second he laid eyes on that yellow hair, Aki felt a wave of instinctive vigilance, followed immediately by… (disgust?)
(Disgust? That’s not right…)
Aki tensed. Vigilance was one thing, but why did he feel such raw hatred? If he remembered correctly, Riser had tried to force a marriage, but eventually had his arc of redemption. The guy hadn’t done anything to him yet; this level of killing intent was bizarre.
Aki didn’t have to think long. The only thing capable of manipulating his reaction to the punk was the NTR Template. It seemed that beyond just inciting hostility, the template was finding new, lateral ways to influence him—specifically by projecting aggression toward powerful, relatively “non-evil” targets.
Aki took a deep breath, forcibly expelling the mental static. With his current strength, now that he knew the template was meddling, he wouldn’t let it happen again.
Riser, having finished his pose, finally turned around.
”It’s been a while since I’ve been to the Human World,” Riser mused, before turning a cavalier look toward Rias. “I’ve come to see you, my lovely Rias.”
Rias crossed her arms, offering no reply. Aki and Koneko ignored him entirely.
The atmosphere grew awkward. After a moment, when no one spoke, Riser forced a stiff laugh. “Rias, where’s your peerage? Why is it so quiet in here?”
Rias let out a soft sigh, rubbing her temples. She glanced at Aki, ensuring he wasn’t about to lash out, before introducing him. “This is from the Phoenix family—”
As Rias introduced them, Aki and Koneko offered curt nods.
”Riser, why are you here?”
”So, this is the Red Dragon Emperor’s successor?” Riser sneered, his tone dripping with arrogance. “To think the guy who beat Azazel is just some wet-behind-the-ears kid. Truly, you can’t tell just by looking.”
Information about Aki had been spreading like wildfire through the Underworld. Riser’s tone and his arrogant attitude were genuinely grating. Aki felt his irritation rising again.
”Whether I’m ‘wet behind the ears’ or not, you could always ask Rias.”
The casual remark completely shattered Riser’s composure. His eyes widened, darting to Rias, who was currently rolling her eyes at Aki.
”Rias… have you and this guy already…?”
Rias feigned a cough, giving an imperceptible nod.
Riser looked like he’d been struck by lightning. He stood frozen, muttering to himself, “We’re engaged… how could you…”
”Rias,” Rias said coldly, “I told you before. I’m not marrying you.”
Riser wasn’t the type to stay rattled for long. He pushed down his frustration and anger, snapping back into his usual, debauched demeanor. “Rias, I don’t think your family’s situation allows you to be this willful—”
”I have no intention of ruining my house,” Rias cut him off. “I’m willing to accept a husband who joins my family, but I will only marry someone I actually recognize.”
”Preventing the decline of the Pure-blood Devil bloodline, which was devastated in the last war, is a matter for all of Devilkind. Your father and Lord Sirzechs decided on this marriage with the future in mind.”
Riser tried to use the “greater good” to pressure her. Though Rias had already been claimed by someone else, he wasn’t about to give up—partly because of his own ego, and partly to fulfill his family’s mission. The only downside was that even if he succeeded now, he’d likely be a laughingstock for the rest of his life.
Up until this point, Riser truly hadn’t considered the possibility of failure. Even if he sensed that Aki’s strength wasn’t ordinary, his undefeated record in Rating Games gave him absolute confidence.
”My father, my brother, everyone in the family… they’re all just being too hasty.” Rias exhaled, her voice turning stern. “I won’t say it again, Riser. I’m not marrying you.”
