Chapter 269 The Khaos Brigade Emerges

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Thanks to Sona Sitri’s heartfelt words a few days earlier, combined with the fragments of memory he had recovered, Aki was the first to grasp what was happening.

He had assumed that, with Gasper’s Forbidden Balor View out of the picture and the Three Factions Talk moved forward, the Khaos Brigade would not dare interfere. That assumption now seemed painfully optimistic.

No matter the situation, the Khaos Brigade would never stand by and watch the Three Factions reach a lasting peace. If they lacked the time to prepare an elaborate plan, they would simply force their way through.

Their numbers were small, yet their strongest members could stand alongside the elites of the Three Factions. Because they cared little for race, lineage, or mythology, they welcomed anyone who longed for chaos. Even within groups that sought peace, there were always those who preferred conflict, and when such people found themselves cornered, the Brigade was there to draw them in.

They had not limited themselves to causing trouble in the Underworld. The North had also been thrown into turmoil by their actions. They were fanatics who lived for disorder, and their name suited them perfectly. Wherever they appeared, bloodshed and upheaval followed.

The mass-produced magi and artificial pawns continued to clash, yet there was no blood and no mangled corpses. Countless flashes of light burst apart and dissolved into raw elements, creating a strangely clean battlefield.

That almost elegant spectacle lasted only until the true threat appeared.

Sirzechs suddenly turned toward one side of the living room. “This magic circle… could it be…?”

Before he could finish, the magic circle solidified.

A beautiful dark-skinned woman appeared from within it. She wore square-rimmed glasses, her dreadlocks hanging neatly behind her shoulders.

”Greetings, current Demon King Sirzechs, and to you as well, Lady Serafall.”

Katerea Leviathan placed a hand over her chest and offered a formal Peerage salute.

Not a single person present mistook that gesture for goodwill.

”She is a descendant of the original Demon King Leviathan—Katerea Leviathan,” Sirzechs explained to Rias and the others.

Grayfia and Sona instinctively moved away from the magic circle, positioning themselves closer to their respective Demon Kings.

Serafall, who had maintained an unusual level of composure throughout the gathering, finally let the act slip.

”Why are you here?” she demanded, her voice rising into its familiar bright, high-pitched tone.

In response, Katerea raised her staff. A savage smile spread across her face.

”For the sake of the world’s ruin and chaos, of course.”

 The staff swung once.

In the next instant, the villa exploded into rubble.

Towering flames rose into the air while smoke rolled across the shattered grounds. Aki immediately abandoned the defensive spell he had been preparing. Sirzechs, Michael, and Shemhaza1 had already joined forces to create a spherical barrier, and Katerea’s attack had failed to so much as shake it.

”The leaders of the Three Factions working together to cast a defensive barrier…”

Covering her mouth with one hand, Katerea laughed softly.

 ”My, how utterly… ordinary.”

Within the barrier, Shemhaza glanced toward Sirzechs and Serafall.

”It seems the signing ceremony will have to be postponed.”

”What exactly are you trying to accomplish, Katerea?” Sirzechs asked.

”Nothing complicated,” Katerea replied, her voice filled with refined contempt. “I simply disagree with the purpose of this gathering. The age of the original Demon Kings and Gods has ended. It is time for the world to be remade.”

Serafall pressed both hands against her chest.

”Lea-chan… please stop. Why are you doing this?”

At that moment, she looked less like a Demon King and more like a girl desperately asking someone precious to turn back.

 Katerea’s expression darkened even further.

”Serafall! You stole the title of Leviathan from me, and yet you dare stand there as though you are in the right?”

 ”I didn’t…” Serafall whispered.

Her voice dropped so low that it almost vanished beneath the crackling flames.

”Do not worry,” Katerea said as she leveled her staff at the barrier. “I will kill you here and reclaim the name of Leviathan myself.”

With the immediate danger temporarily contained, Aki’s thoughts began racing.

(Devils, Angels, and Fallen Angels… their powers do not interfere with each other at all? They can actually combine them into a single barrier. Interesting.)

(If the Khaos Brigade chose a direct attack, there is no way they would send only Katerea. There are already four Demon King-class fighters on our side.)

(Katerea probably could not even win a one-on-one fight against any of them, let alone face all four.)

 (Wait…)

Aki glanced toward Vali, who looked eager to throw himself into the battle.

 (Make that two against four.)

Almost as soon as the thought crossed his mind, Vali made his move.

Turning on the Three Factions from inside the barrier, he forced the leaders to abandon their joint defense and scatter. The moment the barrier collapsed, he withdrew without hesitation.

With the barrier gone, Sirzechs and Serafall escorted Rias’s group to safety. Michael and Shemhaza made no attempt to restore the combined defense. Neither of them intended to continue protecting everyone while enemies stood among them.

As the White Dragon Emperor revealed his allegiance, every gaze shifted toward him.

Shemhaza adjusted his glasses, visibly irritated.

”Vali… so you truly joined the Khaos Brigade?”

At the same time, he quickly informed the others of Vali’s identity.

”That is right,” Vali answered confidently. “My father was descended from the line of the true Demon King Lucifer, while my mother was human.”

As though to prove his claim, a pair of long black wings extended from behind his armor.

 Devil wings.

”Uesugi Aki,” Vali called, his voice echoing from within the armor. “I am the strongest of this age. I inherited the blood of a Demon King and gained the power of a dragon. But you? Before becoming a Devil, you were nothing more than an ordinary high school student. Aside from the Boosted Gear, you have nothing at all. Under different circumstances, that might have been impressive. Instead, I find it dull. We possess rival Sacred Gears, yet the difference between us is only natural.”

Aki, who had been doing his best to stay unnoticed, could only stare at Vali’s grand performance in the sky.

(Does this guy ever bother learning anything about the people he fights?)

(Or is he really just a battle addict with muscles where his brain should be?)

After Vali finished proclaiming the loneliness of being unmatched, he finally noticed that everyone around him was staring with unusually complicated expressions.

 Summary:

Aki senses the impending arrival of the Khaos Brigade as they disrupt the Three Factions Talk with a sudden, forceful assault. Katerea Leviathan reveals herself, launching a destructive attack that forces the leaders of the Three Factions to coordinate their defenses. Vali, the White Dragon Emperor, betrays the group, shattering the stalemate and forcing the leaders to act individually. The chapter ends with Vali taunting Aki, unaware of his actual combat history.

 —

 Trivia:

The Khaos Brigade recruits members regardless of race or mythology.

The Northern territory has been ravaged by the Brigade.

Devils, Angels, and Fallen Angels possess the biological capability for cross-faction marriage.

Vali’s power is tied to his half-human, half-Demon King lineage.

Aki holds an SSS-Rank status, far above his earlier S-Rank assessment.
