Chapter 431 Farewell, White Dragon Emperor
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The old immortals had lived for centuries, spending those years learning how to survive. Even with their heads cut off, so long as they were reattached in time, they could come back from the brink of death.
But Sephie and Liala had waited too long for this opportunity—they weren’t about to give these relics any chance to cling to life.
Sephie’s steel-booted leg arced upward, merciless and precise, before she brought it crashing down on the head at her feet. The skull exploded beneath her heel like an overripe fruit.
Rank green ichor burst across the stones as the headless corpse beside it twitched once, twice, then fell still.
Liala wrinkled her nose at the gruesome display, pulling her two strips of white cloth a little tighter around herself—though they did little to cover her generous curves or the expanse of creamy skin they left exposed.
”Really? Couldn’t you be just a little more civilized?” She grimaced. “This is so messy…”
Sephie arched an eyebrow. “I don’t recall you being any more civilized when it’s your turn to get your hands dirty.”
Though a generation separated them in age, years of fighting side by side had built a deep understanding of each other.
Liala might dress provocatively and project the image of an elegant mage, but when it came to actual combat, she was ruthlessly cruel and unflinchingly brutal.
Compared to Sephie—a pureblood Devil—Liala, whose atavism had awakened God-faction traits, possessed an even more twisted nature.
It didn’t help that her parents had been killed by Curia when she was young. If not for Sephie’s intervention, Liala wouldn’t have survived at all.
Had they left these old relics to Liala’s tender mercies, the scene would have been several times more bloody.
”Even if you don’t care about civility,” Liala pressed, “aren’t you afraid of setting off a trap?”
For all her stubbornness, Liala was kind at heart. And toward Sephie, who had raised her from childhood, she still played the role of the obedient little sister—even now that her power had quietly surpassed her mentor’s.
Sephie clicked her tongue dismissively. “If these things were that easy to trip, Demon King Castle would have been blown to kingdom come ages ago.”
She had a general understanding of Curia’s methods, but the specifics—whether there were failsafes, redundant backups—remained a mystery.
On the other hand, she also couldn’t be sure whether the old immortals carried detonation devices on their persons. That uncertainty had kept her waiting until now.
But with Curia’s upper echelon wiped out in an instant, at least in the short term, there was no immediate danger of Demon King Castle going sky-high.
Even if the old bastards had prepared a scorched-earth contingency, it would take considerable time for news of their deaths to spread.
Crushing Curia’s last gamble had bought time—but not enough. The Old-guard Devils could wait no longer.
”My lord, if we don’t move now, we’ll never get another chance.”
”Exactly. Those old fools haven’t contacted us—we can settle accounts with them later.”
The operation’s commander, a middle-aged male Devil carrying the bloodline of one of the Four Great Satans of antiquity, hesitated only a moment before nodding. “Fine. Whoever that black cat really is, with White Dragon Emperor-sama of the Khaos Brigade backing us up, this plan can’t fail.”
He’d initially hoped to avoid troubling Vali, seeing it as a chance to prove himself before his superiors.
But circumstances had spiraled out of control, and that ambition had evaporated in an instant. First came results; second came recognition. Without success, even being the MVP of a losing side was meaningless.
”Sirzechs Lucifer-sama,” he called out, using Vali’s surname in a bid to curry favor—hoping that shared ancestry as descendants of the Demon Kings might earn him some consideration.
Unfortunately, Vali might not actively despise his Devil bloodline, but he certainly felt no affection for it. If he had, he’d have returned to the Old-guard Devils in the Abyss instead of joining the Khaos Brigade.
”Hm. Understood. If any real powerhouses show up, I’ll handle them.”
Vali stepped out of hiding, stretching lazily as he spoke. His only interest lay in fighting strong opponents. He’d had no investment in this mission—until the mysterious black cat acted, followed by the Child of Chaos. Now, finally, he felt a spark of interest.
Still, he’d joined this organization, so duty took precedence. Besides, the Child of Chaos was nothing but a mindless Outer God. The initial excitement had faded quickly enough, and Vali didn’t consider it worth his attention. He had already felt the edges of God-tier—the strongest White Dragon Emperor in history wasn’t just empty boasting.
Ever since his battle with Aki, he’d fully mastered Balance Breaker and devoted himself to studying his White Dragon form’s deeper potential.
That was the true absurdity of Sacred Gears: what others needed a traumatic breakthrough to achieve—forcing open the gates to God-tier—he simply didn’t need. And unlike Aki, who wandered full of doubt, Vali’s goal was crystal clear: fight the strong. As he dug deeper into the power of the White Dragon Emperor’s wings, he naturally walked the path to godhood.
”Thank you, Sirzechs Lucifer-sama!”
The middle-aged Devil’s fist clenched with excitement as he led his Old-guard Devil subordinates into the assault on Demon King Castle.
With this new force joining the fray, the previously retreating Heroic Spirit army began its counterattack.
At the same time, with Old-guard Devil elites at Demon King-class level pinning them down, Shela and her companions found their struggle against the Child of Chaos intensifying.
The Child of Chaos had no intellect and made no effort to coordinate with the Old-guard Devils. But its battle instincts drove it to prioritize enemies that had already earned its full hatred—and Shela’s group had the maximum aggro.
The Old-guard Devils, for their part, avoided direct confrontation with Shela’s Demon King-class fighters, instead harrying them with flanking attacks and opportunistic strikes.
Already fighting an Outer God and now dealing with shameless hit-and-run attacks, Shela’s forces were caught in an impossible position.
”Mother, we can’t keep this up. We need to fall back.”
Lucia’s tall, lithe body twisted sharply aside, barely avoiding a violet lightning strike that crackled through the space she’d occupied an instant before.
She landed beside Shela, her expression grim. “The Old-guard Devils have shown themselves. We can call Rias in now.”
”…Hah.” Shela exhaled heavily, her mood distinctly sour.
She was in rough shape herself. Her tight black leather outfit remained intact, but her face was smudged with dirt and grime—nothing like her usual elegant charm. Not even during her imprisonment by Zolgear had she been reduced to such a state.
”Contact them. I’ll hold things here a while longer.”
Shela’s irritation was plain. This war had erupted far too suddenly. If she’d had more time to Dual Cultivate with Aki—especially now that they’d forged a Soul Contract on the Night of the Full Moon—even if she couldn’t become a Succubus Goddess, she could have held this enfeebled Outer God alone.
Lucia didn’t waste words with protest. Shela didn’t need lessons on how to fight.
For all her delicate, seductive appearance, Shela was no fragile flower—she was a survivor of the Three-Way War, battle-hardened and formidable.
As for why she chose to hold the line rather than retreat… if her life were truly in danger, she’d flee without hesitation. But the current situation, while dire, wasn’t yet lethal—as long as Vali stayed out of it, at least.
If she retreated, no one would be able to stop the Child of Chaos. The hundred-thousand-plus civilians in Demon King Castle wouldn’t survive.
Furthermore, the Gremory household’s heiress… Rias needed more than a pile of rubble. She needed a prosperous, thriving Demon King Castle.
No matter how well-prepared they were, it would still take time for reinforcements to arrive. Shela was buying breathing room for her allies.
All of this—the carnage, the battles, the maneuvering—had unfolded in the span of a mere ten-odd minutes.
Aki surveyed the battlefield. Leohart was now being thoroughly dominated by Naruse Mio, and beyond the city walls, a familiar silhouette drifted in the sky. A faint blue Mana glow rippled across his body.
”No wonder I sensed someone familiar earlier. An old friend has come calling…”
As he spoke, the mysterious black cat dissolved into motes of light. The pale blue Mana coalesced into a tall, powerfully built humanoid form.
Crimson dragon armor, fearsome and gleaming, caught the sunlight and cast back a radiant, predatory gleam. The hard, metallic plates radiated a chilling killing intent.
”Red Dragon Emperor. It’s been a while.”
Vali showed no surprise at Aki appearing in Balance Breaker form. He’d never had concrete evidence, but he’d always suspected that black cat was none other than the Red Dragon Emperor himself.
Just as Aki had vaguely sensed Vali’s presence—perhaps that was the bond between Red Dragon Emperor and White Dragon Emperor.
The difference, of course, was that Aki didn’t particularly like being mentally linked to another man. He’d never fully opened himself to Ddraig’s soul, so his intuition was somewhat duller.
”Have the Old-guard Devils thrown in their lot with the Khaos Brigade now?” Aki asked, making no move to reveal his true power yet. He wanted to see what intel he could gather. “Why do you two groups always show up together like this?”
Vali seemed happy to chat, whether he didn’t care or had his own reasons.
”The Khaos Brigade’s goal is to return the world to chaos,” Vali said. “A war this spectacular—of course we’d have a hand in it. As for the Old-guard Devils… well, rather than being assimilated by the Abyss, they’d rather join us.”
He hadn’t answered directly whether they’d defected wholesale. But the implication was clear enough: even if not every last one had joined, the vast majority had.
That made Katarina’s position as a spy even more critical.
The only question was whether she could successfully play the double agent under the nose of Infinite Dragon God Ophis.
Aki suspected she couldn’t—but as long as Katarina performed her duties diligently, Ophis probably wouldn’t care about a little leaked intelligence. A near-God-tier combatant was a valuable asset to the Khaos Brigade.
Trading a few crumbs of intel for Katarina’s labor? Ophis might not be losing that trade at all.
As Aki thought about this, Vali had somehow drifted to the edge of the Colosseum. He reached out, touching the invisible barrier—and was predictably repelled.
”If you hadn’t gone inside,” Vali said, a hint of regret coloring his voice, “we could have had ourselves a proper fight today.” He paused. “But if you hadn’t gone inside, this war probably wouldn’t have happened at all.”
Vali—or rather, the Khaos Brigade—didn’t particularly care who won this conflict. Their goal was simply to sow chaos. The more chaotic this world became, the closer it drew to their ideal of primordial disorder.
Vali had been here all along to ensure war broke out. He might not have taken direct action, but his presence alone had served its purpose.
If not for sensing his aura, Aki might not have sent Naruse Mio through the barrier.
Aki’s primary targets had been Sephie and Liala. But the world line had twisted itself into a knot long ago, and there was no certainty that his actions would even draw Liala out—let alone Sephie, who existed only in legend, the Underworld’s background materials containing not so much as a single line about her.
”Want a fight?” Aki’s voice emerged from his dragon helmet, low and cold as tomb-stone. “Fine. I’ll give you one right now.”
