Chapter 139

”Um… that’s fine.”
To lure out the enemies of the Gavrett family, I spread rumors that I was a womanizer.
Ms. Hilda, a cleric, came to verify those rumors, worried that I might’ve laid hands on Ms. Elina.
After explaining the situation to her, that was my response when she suggested I should touch her too.
Ms. Hilda blinked in surprise at my answer.
”Eh!? You’re not satisfied with me? You like this, right? This.“
Flop flop…
Saying that, she grabbed her chest with both hands and shook it up and down.
She must’ve sensed my preferences—her ample chest, too large to fit in her hands, bounced and changed shape in a way that undeniably tempted me…
”I do like it. I have no complaints about you. But I’m not at that stage anymore…”
I explained that the phase of pretending to be a womanizer had passed. Now, I needed to play the part of a man starving for affection by refraining from womanizing.
Ms. Hilda accepted my reasoning, but she kept pressing, her expression somewhere between disappointed and pouty.
”But wouldn’t it be more convincing if the Viscount warned you because you touched a cleric?”
”That is…”
Her point wasn’t wrong—it would be a logical trigger for the Viscount’s warning.
If it were just family or merchant connections, it’d be one thing. But the church? They’re external and offer healing magic in emergencies.
Touching a cleric affiliated with them would seem like the perfect reason for the Viscount to intervene.
Still, I’d already gotten involved with enough women that it wouldn’t be odd for the Viscount to step in regardless. There was no real need to involve a cleric.
While I was thinking that… Ms. Hilda stepped closer and pressed my hands against her chest.
Squish… Squee squee…
”H-Hey! How is it? You can do whatever you want, you know?”
”…”
But that’s when the reason not to do it started forming.
How should I put this… She seemed strangely desperate. Suspiciously so.
She’s a beautiful woman. Under normal circumstances, she wouldn’t struggle with men.
The church doesn’t forbid relationships, so she had no reason to cling to me like this.
I couldn’t help but wonder what her real motive was… Though, she’d already laid out her intentions, and even if she was an enemy, as long as I didn’t fall for her trap, there’d be no issue.
Maybe she’s after the curse-breaking amulet?
It’s just a magic-infused piece of paper I created to hide Seria’s “Commercial Recovery” skill. But there’s a chance she wants it for someone else.
Whether it’s for her or not doesn’t matter.
But… if I gave it to her, and it didn’t work, she’d lose out.
That’d be a shame.
With that in mind, I started pulling my hands away from her chest, preparing to refuse—
Swoosh…
”Huh!? Wha—”
Gulp. Squish…
Ms. Hilda suddenly pulled my hand back, pressing it more firmly against her chest.
”Um… Do you really dislike it that much?”
Her eyes were genuinely sad. But if the act itself wasn’t her goal, this might lead to a messy outcome.
Even if I refused without explanation, the Gavrett family knew about my relationships with Ms. Elina and the others. Rejecting her outright might cause complications.
So I asked directly.
”Why are you pushing yourself on me like this?”
”W-Well…”
She hesitated. As if there was something hard to say.
Maybe she needed something from me?
As I considered the possibilities, she finally spoke.
”Um… Actually, even at my age, I still… I mean…”
”Huh?”
Not just me— even the maids of the Gavrett family raised their voices in surprise.
Ms. Hilda, flustered, continued to explain.
”Um, were you surprised? My background is a bit special. Because of it, people around me kept men away…”
She didn’t go into detail, but apparently, those around her had been overprotective, making sure no man got close.
Because of that, she’d missed her chances—and when she heard about me, she saw this as her one shot.
I had heard of similar situations before. It seemed the people around her had taken matters into their own hands.
Considering her circumstances, it was understandable.
Even if she didn’t have ulterior motives, making a move still felt wrong.
When I said that, Ms. Hilda’s eyes lit up with a hint of hope. She stepped closer, a slightly manic gleam in her eye.
”It’s okay! I’ll keep it a secret! And Ms. Elina and the others will too, right?”
She turned to face them as she said that.
”Um, well… yeah…”
Maybe sensing her unspoken “I’ll keep your secrets too”, the other women said nothing in response.
Ms. Hilda turned back to me, her expression earnest.
”W-What do you think? If I miss this chance, when will the next one ever come…?”
It seemed she didn’t usually act alone. If not for this special situation, she wouldn’t even have this opportunity.
Not everything in this world is like this, but… it’s not uncommon for people to marry young here.
