Chapter 141-2

Time-wise, there was little chance the place had traps. But it might still have something simple. Maybe something that could make a sound if someone entered.
A sound trap, like a naruko. That was the word for it, right?
Just a string with wood hanging down. If someone pulled the string, the wood would shake and make noise.
If you knew about them, you could avoid them. People might always leave traps like that. They were cheap and easy.
As for traps you could step on… well, if I floated, they wouldn’t go off.
So, I used my Magic Armor to cover the floor and ceiling in white light. Then, I took out my LED light and pointed it forward.
If there were any thin, clear strings like fishing line, the light might bounce off and show me. Or maybe I’d see their shadow.
I only had to make sure the light didn’t shine down into the basement. That would give me away.
With that done, I walked forward. Step by step. Quiet.
No traps went off. I reached the stairs to the basement.
Too careful, maybe?
Still, it was better if the people below thought no one was here. That way, they’d talk freely.
I took away the Magic Armor light and made it go back into mana. Then, I went down the stairs.
* * *
The staircase was long. Like going down two floors. At the bottom, there was a heavy iron door.
From behind the door, I heard voices. They were faint. But there.
So, I made a small tool. It picked up vibrations from the wall and turned them into sound. Like a secret microphone.
Then I listened.
”…So, what now?”
”My mission ends here. I only stayed to watch Alicia as a safety step. The curse already worked.”
”But she’s better now. Doesn’t that ruin the plan?”
”The royal marriage was canceled. That’s all that mattered.”
”Still… wasn’t the third prince the one who liked her? You think he’ll just quit?”
”The moment the curse hit, the news reached them. If talk of marriage starts again, word will spread that Alicia was cursed.”
”And the prince will give up?”
”Who knows? But now that I’ve been found, Gavrett will be even more alert. I don’t think we can sneak in again. Not the same way. No more chances to curse.”
”Couldn’t someone else try? I mean… if I go in, even?”
”I can’t move from person to person. Cursing takes time. The host must stay close to the target.”
”So it’s really over… Wait, didn’t you use a special paper for the curse? Can we reuse it?”
”The paper that kicked me out is still on the table. Maybe it lost its power. But I won’t risk it.”
”Tch… So we really can’t curse again.”
”No. The materials are rare. And even when we have them, it’s hard to prepare. I only had enough for one use.”
”Haaah… If only we got to mess with Alicia when she couldn’t move.”
”That was never possible. She was never alone.”
”Tch. Then maybe I can get close by acting helpful. If I show I found this place, maybe they’ll trust me.”
”You really like her that much?”
”Yeah. She fights with a spear. Rides horses. Her chest and hips shake while she moves. And she’s kind… It makes you want to ruin her.”
”…I don’t get your taste. But if you want that, you should build a good relationship first. If we play this well, we might even take over Gavrett’s house. They might like that too. We could get support.”
”I see… If we have more noble houses, we win. Maybe I become a noble too. Guess I’ll play with the maids until then.”
”Fine. But don’t hurt our own people.”
”Yeah, yeah. I’m not that dumb.”
”Good. Though if Gavrett wins over that Koji guy, our plan falls apart.”
