Volume 2 Chapter 1 Fox-like fox
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Lately, I’ve had an unexpected tagalong on my quail hunts.
A fennec fox. Cute little thing with oversized ears and an attitude to match.
It doesn’t attack me—it’s not aggressive—but it does swipe my quail right out from under me.
I could take it down now, probably. But what if I mess up?
Worse, taking out monsters affects my standing with the higher-tier ones.
And if this fox has big cousins, I don’t want them holding a grudge.
Maybe helping it earns me some goodwill with the other fox monsters.
Even if they’re not allies, neutral is better than hostile.
Thanks to Radar Scan, I can find prey in no time.
I don’t mind giving up a quail now and then, but I do mind it making off with my arrows.
The fox doesn’t even acknowledge me. It just walks up and waits for me to do the work.
Okay, fine.
You want quail? Let’s play a little game.
Two are in range.
I take aim at the one closest to the fox… and intentionally miss the vital spot.
The arrow slices through the base of its wing—still packs a punch, though. Over half its HP gone.
The fox lunges like a streak of yellow lightning, finishing the job.
I’m already lining up the next shot.
The second quail panics and bolts—straight away from the fox.
A moving target’s tough, but with the right angle, not impossible.
I let the arrow fly. It’s not a critical, but it’s enough.
The bird drops.
The fox stares at me, wide-eyed.
Surprised, huh?
Yeah, that’s right—I just nailed two.
”Take the quail. But give me my arrows back.”
No way that’s gonna work, but hey, worth a shot.
* * *
Another day, another hunt.
Will the fox show up again?
The quail population never seems to dip, no matter how many I bring down.
They breed fast and feast on endless wheat.
In this world, defeating a monster racks up a stat called ‘Corruption’.
The more you kill, the more visible your corruption becomes.
Monsters can see it—and they don’t forget.
If a high-level quail monster exists, it’s probably not too happy with me.
I should be careful not to turn every bird monster into an enemy.
Using Radar Scan, I spot a small cluster of quail nearby.
The fox is here again, hiding nearby. Clever little thief.
Today, it edges closer…
Then, unexpectedly, it drops a bundle of arrows at my feet and steps back.
Wait—seriously?
Did it understand what I said yesterday?
Most of the arrows are too damaged to reuse, but still—it tried.
”Alright, fox. I’ll handle the first one. You finish the second.”
No clue if it understands, but hey, let’s see how smart it really is.
I activate Stealthskill, close in, and land a clean headshot—instant kill.
The second quail panics and takes off.
I aim, fire—wing hit. It spirals, crashes, and scrambles away.
It’s fast on the ground. Faster than I can catch.
But the fox? Even faster.
Right on cue, it sprints after the quail and catches it in a clean bite.
It trots back with the catch, and I remove my bent arrow before handing it over.
The arrowhead’s intact—that’s something.
The fox lugs the quail off, tail flicking.
I could track it back to its den with Radar Scan… but nah. Let it have its moment.
I summon Ms. Lime to drain the quail’s blood.
Back home, I’ve got more than ten arrows to repair.
The fox is a pain.
But honestly?
It’s starting to grow on me.
